    Secondary instability of Mack mode disturbances in hypersonic boundary layers over micro-porous surface

    In laminar hypersonic boundary layers, it is known that secondary instability plays a crucial role in transition to turbulence. The secondary instability usually includes the fundamental mode, the subharmonic mode, and the detuned mode. Considerable research exists on the secondary instability mechanism in hypersonic boundary layers with the smooth wall condition. The topic of using micro-porous surfaces for disturbance stabilization has recently drawn interest. The stabilization and, thus, a possible delay in the transition arise due to a reduction in the growth rate of the primary Mack mode by the porous surface. This paper focuses on investigating whether the secondary instability mechanism of Mack modes can also be affected by a surface porosity condition. It is known that the primary Mack mode linear disturbances are changed significantly on the porous surface, and how it subsequently influences the secondary instability of the modified time varying basic flow is our concern. The analysis demonstrates that on the porous surface, as the amplitude of the primary Mack mode increases, the fundamental mode is not stable. Instead, the fundamental mode amplifies rapidly with increasing primary amplitudes. At larger secondary instability spanwise wavenumbers, when the primary amplitude exceeds a certain threshold value, the fundamental modes surpass the subharmonic modes and dominate the secondary instability. However, when the spanwise wavenumber is relatively small, especially at the spanwise wavenumber corresponding to the maximum growth rate of the subharmonic mode, the fundamental modes are weakened and lose their dominant position. We find that corresponding to different amplitudes of primary Mack mode disturbances affected by the porosity parameters, there are no strongly preferred interaction modes that dominate the secondary instability; this contrasts with smooth wall findings. We further find that the larger the pore size or porosity, the more severe the suppression of the fundamental mode

    Effect of WeiJia on carbon tetrachloride induced chronic liver injury

    Aim: To study the effect of WeiJia on chronic liver injury using carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4) induced liver injury animal model. Methods: Wista r rats weighing 180-220g were randomly divided into three groups: normal control group (Group A), CCl 4 induced liver injury control group (Group B) and CCl 4 induction with WeiJia treatment group (Group C). Each group consisted of 14 rats. Liver damage and fibrosis was induced by subcutaneous injection with 40% CCl 4 in olive oil at 3 mL/kg body weight twice a week for eight weeks for Groups B and C rats whereas olive oil was used for Group A rats. Starting from the third week, Group C rats also received daily intraperitoneal injection of WeiJia at a dose of 1.25 ΞΌg/kg body weight. Animals were sacrificed at the fifth week (4 male, 3 female), and eighth week (4 male, 3 female) respectively. Degree of fibrosis were measured and serological markers for liver fibrosis and function including hyaluronic acid (HA), type IV collagen (CIV), Ξ³-glutamyl transferase (Ξ³-GT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were determined. Alpha smooth muscle actin (Ξ±-SMA) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry were also performed. Results: CCl 4 induction led to the damage of liver and development of fibrosis in Group B and Group C rats when compared to Group A rats. The treatment of WeiJia in Group C rats could reduce the fibrosis condition significantly compared to Group B rats. The effect could be observed after three weeks of treatment and was more obvious after eight weeks of treatment. Serum HA, CIV, ALT, AST and Ξ³-GT levels after eight weeks of treatment for Group C rats were 58Β±22 ΞΌg/L (P 0.05) respectively, similar to normal control group (Group A), but significantly different from CCl 4 induced liver injury control group (Group B). An increase in PCNA and decrease in Ξ±-SMA expression level was also observed.     Revealing the electroweak properties of a new scalar resonance

    One or more new heavy resonances may be discovered in experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In order to determine if such a resonance is the long-awaited Higgs boson, it is essential to pin down its spin, CP, and electroweak quantum numbers. Here we describe how to determine what role a newly-discovered neutral CP-even scalar plays in electroweak symmetry breaking, by measuring its relative decay rates into pairs of electroweak vector bosons: WW, ZZ, \gamma\gamma, and Z\gamma. With the data-driven assumption that electroweak symmetry breaking respects a remnant custodial symmetry, we perform a general analysis with operators up to dimension five. Remarkably, only three pure cases and one nontrivial mixed case need to be disambiguated, which can always be done if all four decay modes to electroweak vector bosons can be observed or constrained. We exhibit interesting special cases of Higgs look-alikes with nonstandard decay patterns, including a very suppressed branching to WW or very enhanced branchings to \gamma\gamma and Z\gamma. Even if two vector boson branching fractions conform to Standard Model expectations for a Higgs doublet, measurements of the other two decay modes could unmask a Higgs imposter.Comment: 23 pages, two figures; v2: minor revision and version to appear in JHE

    Silencing Early Viral Replication in Macrophages and Dendritic Cells Effectively Suppresses Flavivirus Encephalitis

    West Nile (WN) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) viruses can cause fatal neurological infection and currently there is neither a specific treatment nor an approved vaccine for these infections. In our earlier studies, we have reported that siRNAs can be developed as broad-spectrum antivirals for the treatment of infection caused by related viruses and that a small peptide called RVG-9R can deliver siRNA to neuronal cells as well as macrophages. To increase the repertoire of broad-spectrum antiflaviviral siRNAs, we screened 25 siRNAs targeting conserved regions in the viral genome. Five siRNAs were found to inhibit both WNV and SLE replication in vitro reflecting broad-spectrum antiviral activity and one of these was also validated in vivo. In addition, we also show that RVG-9R delivers siRNA to macrophages and dendritic cells, resulting in effective suppression of virus replication. Mice were challenged intraperitoneally (i.p.) with West Nile virus (WNV) and treated i.v. with siRNA/peptide complex. The peritoneal macrophages isolated on day 3 post infection were isolated and transferred to new hosts. Mice receiving macrophages from the anti-viral siRNA treated mice failed to develop any disease while the control mice transferred with irrelevant siRNA treated mice all died of encephalitis. These studies suggest that early suppression of viral replication in macrophages and dendritic cells by RVG-9R-mediated siRNA delivery is key to preventing the development of a fatal neurological disease

    More three-point correlators of giant magnons with finite size

    In the framework of the semiclassical approach, we compute the normalized structure constants in three-point correlation functions, when two of the vertex operators correspond to heavy string states, while the third vertex corresponds to a light state. This is done for the case when the heavy string states are finite-size giant magnons with one or two angular momenta, and for two different choices of the light state, corresponding to dilaton operator and primary scalar operator. The relevant operators in the dual gauge theory are Tr(F_{\mu\nu}^2 Z^j+...) and Tr(Z^j). We first consider the case of AdS_5 x S^5 and N = 4 super Yang-Mills. Then we extend the obtained results to the gamma-deformed AdS_5 x S^5_\gamma, dual to N = 1 super Yang-Mills theory, arising as an exactly marginal deformation of N = 4 super Yang-Mills.Comment: 14 pages, no figure

    Holographic 3-point function at one loop

    We explore the recent weak/strong coupling match of three-point functions in the AdS/CFT correspondence for two semi-classical operators and one light chiral primary operator found by Escobedo et al. This match is between the tree-level three-point function with the two semi-classical operators described by coherent states while on the string side the three-point function is found in the Frolov-Tseytlin limit. We compute the one-loop correction to the three-point function on the gauge theory side and compare this to the corresponding correction on the string theory side. We find that the corrections do not match.     Targeted knock-down of miR21 primary transcripts using snoMEN vectors induces apoptosis in human cancer cell lines

    We have previously reported an antisense technology, 'snoMEN vectors', for targeted knock-down of protein coding mRNAs using human snoRNAs manipulated to contain short regions of sequence complementarity with the mRNA target. Here we characterise the use of snoMEN vectors to target the knock-down of micro RNA primary transcripts. We document the specific knock-down of miR21 in HeLa cells using plasmid vectors expressing miR21-targeted snoMEN RNAs and show this induces apoptosis. Knock-down is dependent on the presence of complementary sequences in the snoMEN vector and the induction of apoptosis can be suppressed by over-expression of miR21. Furthermore, we have also developed lentiviral vectors for delivery of snoMEN RNAs and show this increases the efficiency of vector transduction in many human cell lines that are difficult to transfect with plasmid vectors. Transduction of lentiviral vectors expressing snoMEN targeted to pri-miR21 induces apoptosis in human lung adenocarcinoma cells, which express high levels of miR21, but not in human primary cells. We show that snoMEN-mediated suppression of miRNA expression is prevented by siRNA knock-down of Ago2, but not by knock-down of Ago1 or Upf1. snoMEN RNAs colocalise with Ago2 in cell nuclei and nucleoli and can be co-immunoprecipitated from nuclear extracts by antibodies specific for Ago2

    Holographic three-point functions for short operators

    We consider holographic three-point functions for operators dual to short string states at strong coupling in N=4 super Yang-Mills. We treat the states as point-like as they come in from the boundary but as strings in the interaction region in the bulk. The interaction position is determined by saddle point, which is equivalent to conservation of the canonical momentum for the interacting particles, and leads to conservation of their conformal charges. We further show that for large dimensions the rms size of the interaction region is small compared to the radius of curvature of the AdS space, but still large compared to the string Compton wave-length. Hence, one can approximate the string vertex operators as flat-space vertex operators with a definite momentum, which depends on the conformal and R-charges of the operator. We then argue that the string vertex operator dual to a primary operator is chosen by satisfying a twisted version of Q^L=Q^R, up to spurious terms. This leads to a unique choice for a scalar vertex operator with the appropriate charges at the first massive level. We then comment on some features of the corresponding three-point functions, including the application of these results to Konishi operators.Comment: 24 pages; v2: References added, typos fixed, minor change
