Nonequilibrium Zaklan model on Apollonian Networks
The Zaklan model had been proposed and studied recently using the equilibrium
Ising model on Square Lattices (SL) by Zaklan et al (2008), near the critica
temperature of the Ising model presenting a well-defined phase transition; but
on normal and modified Apollonian networks (ANs), Andrade et al. (2005, 2009)
studied the equilibrium Ising model. They showed the equilibrium Ising model
not to present on ANs a phase transition of the type for the 2D Ising model.
Here, using agent-based Monte-Carlo simulations, we study the Zaklan model with
the well-known majority-vote model (MVM) with noise and apply it to tax evasion
on ANs, to show that differently from the Ising model the MVM on ANs presents a
well defined phase transition. To control the tax evasion in the economics
model proposed by Zaklan et al, MVM is applied in the neighborhood of the
critical noise to the Zaklan model. Here we show that the Zaklan model
is robust because this can be studied besides using equilibrium dynamics of
Ising model also through the nonequilibrium MVM and on various topologies
giving the same behavior regardless of dynamic or topology used here.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with

Paramagnetic Meissner Effect in Multiply-Connected Superconductors
We have measured a paramagnetic Meissner effect in Nb-Al2O3-Nb Josephson
junction arrays using a scanning SQUID microscope. The arrays exhibit
diamagnetism for some cooling fields and paramagnetism for other cooling
fields. The measured mean magnetization is always less than 0.3 flux quantum
(in terms of flux per unit cell of the array) for the range of cooling fields
investigated. We demonstrate that a new model of magnetic screening, valid for
multiply-connected superconductors, reproduces all of the essential features of
paramagnetism that we observe and that no exotic mechanism, such as d-wave
superconductivity, is needed for paramagnetism.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, LaTe
Thermal fluctuations of a quantized massive scalar field in Rindler background
Thermal fluctuations for a massive scalar field in the Rindler wedge are
obtained by applying the point-splitting procedure to the zero temperature
Feynman propagator in a conical spacetime. Renormalization is implemented by
removing the zero temperature contribution. It is shown that for a field of non
vanishing mass the thermal fluctuations, when expressed in terms of the local
temperature, do not have Minkowski form. As a by product, Minkowski vacuum
fluctuations seen by an uniformly accelerated observer are determined and
confronted with the literature.Comment: 10 pages; Latex fil
Induced paramagnetic states by localized -loops in grain boundaries
Recent experiments on high-temperature superconductors show paramagnetic
behavior localized at grain boundaries (GB). This paramagnetism can be
attributed to the presence unconventional d-wave induced -junctions. By
modeling the GB as an array of and conventional Josephson junction we
determine the conditions of the occurrence of the paramagnetic behavior.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Unsupervised, Efficient and Semantic Expertise Retrieval
We introduce an unsupervised discriminative model for the task of retrieving
experts in online document collections. We exclusively employ textual evidence
and avoid explicit feature engineering by learning distributed word
representations in an unsupervised way. We compare our model to
state-of-the-art unsupervised statistical vector space and probabilistic
generative approaches. Our proposed log-linear model achieves the retrieval
performance levels of state-of-the-art document-centric methods with the low
inference cost of so-called profile-centric approaches. It yields a
statistically significant improved ranking over vector space and generative
models in most cases, matching the performance of supervised methods on various
benchmarks. That is, by using solely text we can do as well as methods that
work with external evidence and/or relevance feedback. A contrastive analysis
of rankings produced by discriminative and generative approaches shows that
they have complementary strengths due to the ability of the unsupervised
discriminative model to perform semantic matching.Comment: WWW2016, Proceedings of the 25th International Conference on World

Flux front penetration in disordered superconductors
We investigate flux front penetration in a disordered type II superconductor
by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of interacting vortices and find scaling
laws for the front position and the density profile. The scaling can be
understood performing a coarse graining of the system and writing a disordered
non-linear diffusion equation. Integrating numerically the equation, we observe
a crossover from flat to fractal front penetration as the system parameters are
varied. The value of the fractal dimension indicates that the invasion process
is described by gradient percolation.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
