    Chemical Abundance Study of One Red Giant Star in NGC 5694 : A Globular Cluster with Dwarf Spheroidals' Chemical Signature?

    We report the abundance analysis of one red giant branch star in the metal-poor outer halo globular cluster NGC 5694. We obtain [Fe/H] = -1.93, based on the ionized lines, and our metallicity measurement is in good agreement with previous estimates. We find that [Ca+Ti/2Fe] and [Cu/Fe] of NGC 5694 are about 0.3 -- 0.4 dex lower than other globular clusters with similar metallicities, but similar to some LMC clusters and stars in some dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Differences persist, however, in the abundances of neutron capture elements. The unique chemical abundance pattern and the large Galactocentric distance (30 kpc) and radial velocity (-138.6 +/- 1.0 km/sec) indicate that NGC 5694 had an extragalactic origin.Comment: ApJL accepte

    Exchange Bias Induced by the Fe3O4 Verwey transition

    We present a study of the exchange bias in different configurations of V2O3 thin films with ferromagnetic layers. The exchange bias is accompanied by a large vertical shift in the magnetization. These effects are only observed when V2O3 is grown on top of Ni80Fe20 permalloy. The magnitude of the vertical shift is as large as 60% of the total magnetization which has never been reported in any system. X-Ray diffraction studies show that the growth conditions promote the formation of a ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 interlayer. The change in the easy magnetization axis of Fe3O4 across the Verwey transition at 120 K is correlated with the appearance of exchange bias and vertical shift in magnetization. Both phenomena disappear above 120 K, indicating for the first time a direct relationship between the magnetic signature of the Verwey transition and exchange bias.Comment: Accepted for publication Physical Review

    This paper studies the self-dual Einstein-Dirac theory. A generalization is obtained of the Jacobson-Smolin proof of the equivalence between the self-dual and Palatini purely gravitational actions. Hence one proves equivalence of self-dual Einstein-Dirac theory to the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble-Dirac theory. The Bianchi symmetry of the curvature, core of the proof, now contains a non-vanishing torsion.     Eleven-dimensional massless superparticles and matrix theory spin-orbit couplings revisited

    The classical probe dynamics of the eleven-dimensional massless superparticles in the background geometry produced by N source M-momenta is investigated in the framework of N-sector DLCQ supergravity. We expand the probe action up to the two fermion terms and find that the fermionic contributions are the spin-orbit couplings, which precisely agree with the matrix theory calculations. We comment on the lack of non-perturbative corrections in the one-loop matrix quantum mechanics effective action and its compatibility with the supergravity analysis.Comment: 11 pages, Latex, no figure

    Identifying clusters of anomalous payments in the salvadorian payment system

    We develop an unsupervised methodology to group payments and identify possible anomalies. With our methodology, we identify clusters based on a set of network features, using transactional (unlabeled) information from a systemically important payment system of El Salvador. We first preprocess network features, such as degree and strength, through a principal components analysis we reduce the dimensionality of the newly defined data, then we place the main variables into clustering algorithms (k-means and DBSCAN) to analyze anomalous payments. We then analyze, these clusters using random forest to obtain the main network feature. Our results suggest that the proposed methodology works very well to detect anomalous payments, and it is very important to study the case of El Salvador, because of the recent restructuring of the Massive Payment System in El Salvador (promoted by the Transfer365 project), because the authorities want to increase financial inclusion. This change will make the SPM available to the public, to diversify services and incorporate more participants because, historically, it has operated with only three active participants. We expected that Transfer365 will interconnect the LBTR participants' systems with their banking core, the systems of the Ministry of Finance, and other authorized participants to channel large payment flows. Then, identifying possible anomalies through methodology will enhance risk monitoring and management by payment systems overseers

    Necessary conditions for classical super-integrability of a certain family of potentials in constant curvature spaces

    We formulate the necessary conditions for the maximal super-integrability of a certain family of classical potentials defined in the constant curvature two-dimensional spaces. We give examples of homogeneous potentials of degree -2 on E2E^2 as well as their equivalents on S2S^2 and H2H^2 for which these necessary conditions are also sufficient. We show explicit forms of the additional first integrals which always can be chosen polynomial with respect to the momenta and which can be of an arbitrary high degree with respect to the momenta
