Conceptual model of salt marsh management on Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Florida: final report
Diking and holding water on salt marshes ("impounding" the marsh) is a
management technique used on Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
(MINWR) and elsewhere in the Southeast to: a) prevent the reproduction of
saltmarsh mosquitos, and b) attract wintertering waterfowl and other marsh,
shore, and wading birds. Because of concern that diking and holding water
may interfere with the production of estuarine fish and shellfish,
impoundment managers are being asked to consider altering management
protocol to reduce or eliminate any such negative influence. How to change
protocol and preserve effective mosquito control and wildlife management is
a decision of great complexity because: a) the relationships between
estuarine organisms and the fringing salt marshes at the land-water interface
are complex, and b) impounded marshes are currently good habitat for a
variety of species of fish and wildlife. Most data collection by scientists
and managers in the area has not been focused on this particular
problem. Furthermore, collection of needed data may not be possible before
changes in protocol are demanded. Therefore, the purpose of this document
is two-fold: 1) to suggest management alternatives, given existing information,
and 2) to help identify research needs that have a high probability
of leading to improved simultaneous management of mosquitos, waterfowl,
other wildlife, freshwater fish, and estuarine fish and shellfish on the
marshland of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. (92 page document

basis for a conceptual model of salt marsh management on Merritt
Island, Florida (Section 1). A copy of each item is available on
file at the Florida Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit,
Gainesville. Some relevant proprietary items and unpublished
drafts have not been included pending permission of the authors.
We will continue to add pertinent references to our bibliography
and files. Currently, some topics are represented by very few
items. As our synthesis develops, we will be able to indicate a
subset of papers most pertinent to an understanding of the
ecology and management of Merritt Island salt marshes.

On Representations of Conformal Field Theories and the Construction of Orbifolds
We consider representations of meromorphic bosonic chiral conformal field
theories, and demonstrate that such a representation is completely specified by
a state within the theory. The necessary and sufficient conditions upon this
state are derived, and, because of their form, we show that we may extend the
representation to a representation of a suitable larger conformal field theory.
In particular, we apply this procedure to the lattice (FKS) conformal field
theories, and deduce that Dong's proof of the uniqueness of the twisted
representation for the reflection-twisted projection of the Leech lattice
conformal field theory generalises to an arbitrary even (self-dual) lattice. As
a consequence, we see that the reflection-twisted lattice theories of Dolan et
al are truly self-dual, extending the analogies with the theories of lattices
and codes which were being pursued. Some comments are also made on the general
concept of the definition of an orbifold of a conformal field theory in

IDE spatio-temporal impact fluxes and high time-resolution studies of multi-impact events and long-lived debris clouds
The purpose of the Interplanetary Dust Experiment (IDE) on the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) was to sample the cosmic dust environment and to use the spatio-temporal aspect of the experiment to distinguish between the various components of the environment: zodiacal cloud, beta meteoroids, meteor streams, interstellar dust, and orbital debris. It was found that the introduction of precise time and even rudimentary directionality as co-lateral observables in sampling the particulate environment in near-Earth space produces an enormous qualitative improvement in the information content of the impact data. The orbital debris population is extremely clumpy, being dominated by persistent clouds in which the fluxes may rise orders of magnitude above the background. The IDE data suggest a strategy to minimize the damage to sensitive spacecraft components, using the observed characteristics of cloud encounters
Using formative research to develop a hospital-based perinatal public health intervention in the US: The Thirty Million Words Initiative Newborn Parent Education Curriculum
Parents and caregivers do not exist in a vacuum, and with regard to crafting impactful interventions, it is increasingly being recognized that there are no one-size-fits-all approaches to behavior change. Implementing research to practice is a complex endeavor and requires the adaptation of basic research findings to different cultural and environmental contexts of intended beneficiaries (Sepinwall, 2002; Weisner & Hay, 2014). The practice of formative research allows for the systematic assessment of diverse implementation contexts and provides insights into responsive adaptations of content and delivery. In this study, we detail the use of formative testing to inform the development of a curriculum designed to support the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS): the Thirty Million Words Initiative Newborn (TMW-Newborn) Parent Education Curriculum provides caregivers of newborns with information on the UNHS and illustrates the importance of identifying if a newborn is deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) to ensure that caregivers learn how to promote early language development. The information provided could potentially reduce lost-to-follow up (LFU) rates for newborns who may be D/HH. Using qualitative methods, we collected and responded to feedback obtained from caregivers of newborns and were able to gear content, messaging and delivery of the intervention to stakeholder needs. A subsample of participants also completed a knowledge survey testing their understanding of intervention content prior to receiving the intervention, as well as the day after. The results showed that participant scores increased significantly post-intervention
A calcium-dependent nuclease from apoptotic rat thymocytes is homologous with cyclophilin : recombinant cyclophilins A, B, and C have nuclease activity
Apoptosis is an important physiological process that involves the deletion of specific cells in a controlled and timely manner. A biochemical hallmark typifying apoptosis in normal lymphocytes is DNA cleavage caused by a calcium-dependent nuclease. We have previously identified and purified an 18-kDa nuclease (NUC18) from glucocorticoid-treated rat thymocytes whose activity is associated with this apoptotic DNA fragmentation. Partial protein sequencing of pure NUC18 has generated two peptide sequences that have a remarkable similarity to rat cyclophilin A and other members of the cyclophilin family
The chaperone protein clusterin may serve as a cerebrospinal fluid biomarker for chronic spinal cord disorders in the dog
Chronic spinal cord dysfunction occurs in dogs as a consequence of diverse aetiologies, including long-standing spinal cord compression and insidious neurodegenerative conditions. One such neurodegenerative condition is canine degenerative myelopathy (DM), which clinically is a challenge to differentiate from other chronic spinal cord conditions. Although the clinical diagnosis of DM can be strengthened by the identification of the Sod1 mutations that are observed in affected dogs, genetic analysis alone is insufficient to provide a definitive diagnosis. There is a requirement to identify biomarkers that can differentiate conditions with a similar clinical presentation, thus facilitating patient diagnostic and management strategies. A comparison of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein gel electrophoresis profile between idiopathic epilepsy (IE) and DM identified a protein band that was more prominent in DM. This band was subsequently found to contain a multifunctional protein clusterin (apolipoprotein J) that is protective against endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated apoptosis, oxidative stress, and also serves as an extracellular chaperone influencing protein aggregation. Western blot analysis of CSF clusterin confirmed elevated levels in DM compared to IE (p < 0.05). Analysis of spinal cord tissue from DM and control material found that clusterin expression was evident in neurons and that the clusterin mRNA levels from tissue extracts were elevated in DM compared to the control. The plasma clusterin levels was comparable between these groups. However, a comparison of clusterin CSF levels in a number of neurological conditions found that clusterin was elevated in both DM and chronic intervertebral disc disease (cIVDD) but not in meningoencephalitis and IE. These findings indicate that clusterin may potentially serve as a marker for chronic spinal cord disease in the dog; however, additional markers are required to differentiate DM from a concurrent condition such as cIVDD
