    Evolution of the Stands Established on Degradated Lands in the Diviciorii Mari Area

    The introduction of some agricultural land which has partially or totally lost their production capacity is and will be a very important action of Romanian forestry. This extends the forest fund and improves the climatic conditions around the planting areas. The research was carried out in two improvement perimeters near Diviciorii Mari, which assumed measurements of tree diameters, heights and harvesting increment cores. After the analysis of the data and increment cores, the results were associated with climatic data and the stands were found to sufferfrom the effects of prolonged droughts. Also, these trees suffer from drying, windfalls and breaks of crowns due to the combination of droughts with slope and soil. The results obtained from the research were compared with the researches carried out at the Mineci-Ungureni Forest District between 1944 and 1955 and similarities were found regarding the influence of droughts on the radial and, implicitly, forest growths

    THE STATE OF VEGETATION IN THE STANDS ESTABLISHED ON DEGRADATED LANDU IN THE HILLY AREA OF TRANSILVANIA

    In the past, Transylvania was an area of high afforestation, in 1919 having a surface of about four million hectares. Due to the need to expand agricultural areas, accessible ones have been deforested, with some of them degrading as a result of intense and irrational grazing. In order to ensure that the degraded areas are not totally unproductive, in the 1970s, they have been afforested, many of them being made with resinous, even in situations where the ecological group provided for other solutions. A number of six sample surfaces were taken into study, in which measurements were taken to track the growth of stands on degraded lands. These stands suffer from isolated windfall and crown breaks, due to the fact that the silvicultural operations are performed at a lower frequency than the production stands. Comparing the data obtained, it was found that the most healthy stands are in the Săvădisla, Sic and Sărmaşu areas, while in the Filitelnic area the trees are affected by isolated windfall and tops and crowns breaks. For tree damage to occur at the lowest possible frequency, strict silvicultural operations required for each stage of development is necessary

    Obtaining and Characterizing Alginate/k-Carrageenan Hydrogel Cross-Linked with Adipic Dihydrazide

    The aim of this paper is obtaining and characterizing hydrogels based on different ratios of oxidized alginate (oA) and k-carrageenan (C), chemically cross-linked with adipic dihydrazide (adh). The alginate (A) was first oxidized with sodium metaperiodate in order to transform it into the dialdehyde derivative, a more reactive compound than alginate. A known procedure for oxidation of alginate with sodium metaperiodate in ethanol-water in order to improve alginate reactivity by transforming the hydroxyl end-groups into dialdehyde was used, preceded by a partially cleavage of the alginate chains. In the second stage, the mixture of dialdehydic derivative of oxidized alginate, k-carrageenan and glycerol subjected to reaction with adipic dihydrazide leads to a Semi-Interpenetrated Network covalently cross-linked alginate/k-carrageenan hydrogel (oACadh), based on the dihydrazone compound which is responsible for the chemical cross-linking.     Intercomparison exercises of radon instruments play an important part when it comes to domestic survey as well as international or national mapping in dwellings, soil or water. Therefore, it is of prime interest to improve and standardize technical methods of measurement and also to verify quality assurance through comparison between different instruments and techniques. In the present paper is described the latest intercomparison exercise performed between the Laboratory of Environmental Radioactivity (hereafter called LER) of our department and other 15 different teams around Europe.     Băiţa-Ştei was the largest uranium reserve in Romania with estimated reserves of 450,000 tons of high grade metal. It was a large open pit mine in the northwest of Romania (West Carpathian Mountains), situated at 123 km south-east of Oradea, the capital of Bihor County. The transport during the time of sediment by Crişul Băiţa water course increased the uranium and radium content in the river meadow. The building material from Crişul Băiţariver bed (stone, gravel, sand) was used as construction material for the houses. In addition, some people living on this valley and surroundings after the opening exploitation used as building material the uranium waste from this mine. Preliminary indoor radon measurement (grab samples) in the villages situated on the route of ore transport (BăiţaPlai -Ştei) shown high radon concentrations, until 5000 Bq m−3. The new result obtained in this work in springer season 252 Bq m−3 is comparable with the annual means of 241 Bq m−3 and 229 Bq m−3 respectively, previously obtained, but more than twice times higher than the average value of 126 Bq m−3, computed for Romania. About 3000 of etched CR-39 track detectors were used followed by a selection of 20 houses proposed for remediation where a systematic investigation regarding radon sources was performed. The measured indoor radon concentration in the surveyed buildings ranged from 40 to 4000 Bq m−3. For experimental research, a representative pilot house was chosen. This house represents an example of a typical building from this area, with complex and various radon entry pathways which are correlated with the geology of soil.     Differences between familial and sporadic dilated cardiomyopathy: ESC EORP Cardiomyopathy & Myocarditis registry

    Aims: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a complex disease where genetics interplay with extrinsic factors. This study aims to compare the phenotype, management, and outcome of familial DCM (FDCM) and non-familial (sporadic) DCM (SDCM) across Europe. Methods and results: Patients with DCM that were enrolled in the prospective ESC EORP Cardiomyopathy & Myocarditis Registry were included. Baseline characteristics, genetic testing, genetic yield, and outcome were analysed comparing FDCM and SDCM; 1260 adult patients were studied (238 FDCM, 707 SDCM, and 315 not disclosed). Patients with FDCM were younger (P\ua0<\ua00.01), had less severe disease phenotype at presentation (P\ua0<\ua00.02), more favourable baseline cardiovascular risk profiles (P\ua0 64\ua00.007), and less medication use (P\ua0 64\ua00.042). Outcome at 1\ua0year was similar and predicted by NYHA class (HR 0.45; 95% CI [0.25\u20130.81]) and LVEF per % decrease (HR 1.05; 95% CI [1.02\u20131.08]. Throughout Europe, patients with FDCM received more genetic testing (47% vs. 8%, P\ua0<\ua00.01) and had higher genetic yield (55% vs. 22%, P\ua0<\ua00.01). Conclusions: We observed that FDCM and SDCM have significant differences at baseline but similar short-term prognosis. Whether modification of associated cardiovascular risk factors provide opportunities for treatment remains to be investigated. Our results also show a prevalent role of genetics in FDCM and a non-marginal yield in SDCM although genetic testing is largely neglected in SDCM. Limited genetic testing and heterogeneity in panels provides a scaffold for improvement of guideline adherence

    The multichord stellar occultation on 2019 October 22 by the trans-Neptunian object (84922) 2003 VS

    Context. Stellar occultations have become one of the best techniques to gather information about the physical properties of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), which are critical objects for understanding the origin and evolution of our Solar System. Aims. The purpose of this work is to determine, with better accuracy, the physical characteristics of the TNO (84922) 2003 VS2 through the analysis of the multichord stellar occultation on 2019 October 22 and photometric data collected afterward. Methods. We predicted, observed, and analyzed the multichord stellar occultation of the Second Gaia Data Release (Gaia DR2) source 3449076721168026624 (mυ = 14.1 mag) by the plutino object 2003 VS2 on 2019 October 22. We performed aperture photometry on the images collected and derived the times when the star disappeared and reappeared from the observing sites that reported a positive detection. We fit the extremities of such positive chords to an ellipse using a Monte Carlo method. We also carried out photometric observations to derive the rotational light curve amplitude and rotational phase of 2003 VS2 during the stellar occultation. Combining the results and assuming a triaxial shape, we derived the 3D shape of 2003 VS2. Results. Out of the 39 observatories involved in the observational campaign, 12 sites, located in Bulgaria (one), Romania (ten), and Serbia (one), reported a positive detection; this makes it one of the best observed stellar occultations by a TNO so far. Considering the rotational phase of 2003 VS2 during the stellar occultation and the rotational light curve amplitude derived (Am = 0.264 ± 0.017 mag), we obtained a mean area-equivalent diameter of (DAeq)\left( {{D_{{{\rm{A}}_{{\rm{eq}}}}}}} \right) = 545 ± 13 km and a geometric albedo of 0.134 ± 0.010. By combining the rotational light curve information with the stellar occultation results, we derived the best triaxial shape for 2003 VS2, which has semiaxes a = 339 ± 5 km, b = 235 ± 6 km, and c = 226 ± 8 km. The derived aspect angle of 2003 VS2 is θ = 59° ± 2° or its supplementary θ = 121° ± 2°, depending on the north-pole position of the TNO. The spherical-volume equivalent diameter is (DVeq)\left( {{D_{{{\rm{V}}_{{\rm{eq}}}}}}} \right) = 524 ± 7 km. If we consider large albedo patches on its surface, the semi-major axis of the ellipsoid could be ~ 10 km smaller. These results are compatible with the previous ones determined from the single-chord 2013 and four-chord 2014 stellar occultations and with the effective diameter and albedo derived from Herschel and Spitzer data. They provide evidence that 2003 VS2’s 3D shape is not compatible with a homogeneous triaxial body in hydrostatic equilibrium, but it might be a differentiated body and/or might be sustaining some stress. No secondary features related to rings or material orbiting around 2003 VS2 were detected
