    A Project Portfolio Management Approach to Tacklingthe Exploration/Exploitation Trade-off

    Organizational ambidexterity (OA) is an essen-tial capability for surviving in dynamic business environ-ments that advocates the simultaneous engagement inexploration and exploitation. Over the last decades,knowledge on OA has substantially matured, coveringinsights into antecedents, outcomes, and moderators of OA.However, there is little prescriptive knowledge that offersguidance on how to put OA into practice and to tackle thetrade-off between exploration and exploitation. To addressthis gap, the authors adopt the design science researchparadigm and propose an economic decision model asartifact. The decision model assists organizations inselecting and scheduling exploration and exploitation pro-jects to become ambidextrous in an economically reason-able manner. As for justificatory knowledge, the decisionmodel draws from prescriptive knowledge on projectportfolio management and value-based management, andfrom descriptive knowledge related to OA to structure thefield of action. To evaluate the decision model, its designspecification is discussed against theory-backed designobjectives and with industry experts. The paper alsoinstantiates the decision model as a software prototype andapplies the prototype to a case based on real-world data

    Antioxidant activity of virgin olive oil phenolic compounds in a micellar system

    The antioxidant activity of two virgin olive oils, obtained from the same olive (Olea europaea sativa) batch but processed with different hammer crushing conditions, was evaluated by measuring their protective action towards linoleic acid peroxidation in a micellar system. The antioxidant efficiency (AE) of the oil phenolic fraction was higher when the olives were processed with a higher hammer crusher rotation rate. HPLC analysis demonstrated that one of the main derivatives of oleuropein, indicated as 3,4-DHPEA-EDA (the dialdehydic form of elenolic acid linked with 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethanol), is present only in the oil with higher AE. 3,4-DHPEA-EDA showed the greatest antioxidant ability among virgin olive oil phenols. Its greater efficiency in the micellar system in comparison with 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethanol (3,4-DHPEA) is related to its greater lipophilicity. It is suggested that the behaviour in the water-micellar environment is representative of that in a real system such as tomato-based sauce with added virgin olive oil

    Ionic conductivity of Znâ\u80\u93Al layered double hydroxide films grown on aluminum substrate

    Znâ\u80\u93Al Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) films were grown on aluminum substrates with different anions by a one-step, hydrothermal process at 80 °C, in which the metal substrate acts as both reactant and support. Since the films are made of partially-oriented nanoplatelets with controllable size and density, this approach can be a promising strategy for the fabrication of functionalized 3D electrodes and patterns on any surface. The presence of the different anions was confirmed by XPS measurements. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy measurements were performed in order to study the electrical behavior of the films, with different inorganic anions intercalated in the LDH interlamellar space. The values of ionic conductivity are correlated to the anion type and the growth time of the films. Fâ\u88\u92intercalated LDHs present a higher conductivity than those with chloride and nitrate anions, which might be related to the lower hydration of the latter. Growth times around 8 h provided the best trade-off between shorter times, which affected the reproducibility of results, and longer periods, which induced formation of aggregates with a resulting lower conductivity

    Why Governing Data Is Difficult: Findings from Danish Local Government

    Part 1: Being Smart: Adoption ChallengesInternational audienceData governance has emerged as a promising approach for transforming organizations. While governing data as an organizational asset has clear benefits, no previous studies have reported on the particular challenges faced by practitioners in local government organizations. Against this backdrop, we investigate why it is difficult for local government organizations to explore and exploit their data assets with data governance. Following an engaged scholarship approach, we carried out six group interviews conducted with 34 representatives from 13 different Danish municipalities. From the analysis, we identified nine challenges relating to three overall themes that are critical to governing data in local government: (1) data value and overview, (2) data practices and collaboration and (3) data capabilities and politics. We explain how the three themes extend previous research in data governance and e-government literature. The implications for practice and directions for future research are discussed

    Modular Brain Network Organization Predicts Response to Cognitive Training in Older Adults

    Cognitive training interventions are a promising approach to mitigate cognitive deficits common in aging and, ultimately, to improve functioning in older adults. Baseline neural factors, such as properties of brain networks, may predict training outcomes and can be used to improve the effectiveness of interventions. Here, we investigated the relationship between baseline brain network modularity, a measure of the segregation of brain sub-networks, and training-related gains in cognition in older adults. We found that older adults with more segregated brain sub-networks (i.e., more modular networks) at baseline exhibited greater training improvements in the ability to synthesize complex information. Further, the relationship between modularity and training-related gains was more pronounced in sub-networks mediating "associative" functions compared with those involved in sensory-motor processing. These results suggest that assessments of brain networks can be used as a biomarker to guide the implementation of cognitive interventions and improve outcomes across individuals. More broadly, these findings also suggest that properties of brain networks may capture individual differences in learning and neuroplasticity. Trail Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT#00977418
