A phenomenological study of leadership: Developmental pathways of leaders with disabilities

    Get PDF
Research on leaders with disabilities is largely limited in scope to civil rights and disability rights leadership. This qualitative research investigated how individuals with disabilities transformed themselves into leaders in the disability field. This research focuses on the leaders’ perceptions of critical experiences and relationships that influenced them as leaders. A phenomenological approach was used to understand the lived experiences of six leaders with disabilities. Open-ended interviews with recognized leaders who had disabilities were analyzed by examining their narrative statements, resulting in a combined description of their lived experience. The results of the analysis revealed that these leaders with disabilities made personal connections with others and found groups that were the right fit for them during their college years or immediately subsequent years. Furthermore, the results found the following essential themes: 1) childhood as an influential life experience, 2) commitment, confidence, resilience, and passion in leadership style, and 3) enjoyment of helping others. These themes were not independent of one another, but were intertwined throughout the lives of the six leaders with disabilities. Through a deeper understanding of leadership development experienced by these leaders with disabilities, this study has implications for practice and further investigation. Higher education and elementary and secondary education can improve leadership skills training and opportunities for students with disabilities. I also recommend several future research topics, including exploring identity development among leaders with disabilities. This dissertation concludes with the recommendation that disabled people should be specifically included in leadership research

A 320 k-year record of microparticles in the Dome Fuji, Antarctica ice core measured by laser-light scattering (scientific paper)

A laser-light scattering method was evaluated from the viewpoint of the measurement ability of concentration and size distribution of microparticles in molten ice core samples. It was demonstrated that analysis can be performed with 10 % accuracy by diluting the sample with ultrapure water by 50 times to eliminate coincidence loss. Using this method, the concentration and size distribution of microparticles were determined on 2829 samples from a 2503 m deep ice core drilled at Dome Fuji, Antarctica. The present paper shows the profiles of number and volume concentrations through the whole depth and the changes in the size distribution through three glacial cycles in the past 320 k-years

Breast cancer patients’ perceptions of appeasement and care needs

The purpose of this study was to clarify breast cancer patients’ perceptions of appearance and support. An anonymous self-administered survey was performed on 100 female breast cancer outpatients at five facilities in Tottori Prefecture. The survey included: 1) painfulness from the change in appearance, 2) impact on continuing treatment, work, and personal relationships, 3) need for coping and care, 4) readiness for coping and care, and 5) desire for information about coping and care. The results showed that most of the subjects recognized that the change in appearance was unavoidable. On the other hand, they also recognized that the way other people looked at them was the most painful thing and affected their relationships; they needed coping skills and care. Therefore, they wanted to be informed and prepared from the time the treatment plan was decided. Friends and acquaintances were not the target of their expectations as informants, and they expected nurses to play that role. Nurses are expected to play a role as supporters to help breast cancer patients rebuild their sense of self-worth and lead a peaceful life

Multiple Bone Metastasis of Sclerosing Epithelioid Fibrosarcoma 12 Years after Initial Surgery—Increasing Ki-67 Labeling Index

Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) is a rare sarcoma of low-grade malignancy. There has been no report to describe the comparison of histological features of SEF between primary and metastatic lesions in spite of high local recurrence rate. We report the histological changes and increasing Ki-67 labeling index of the primary and metastatic lesions of SEF. The patient was a 31-year-old man. At 18, a tumor in the abdominal wall was excised. At 23, the tumor recurred which was removed again. At 30, he was referred to our hospital because of swelling and pain in the chest. Histological examination of the chest wall tumor showed epithelioid cells arranged like alveolar pattern with dense collagen stroma. These findings were consistent with those of SEF. Abdominal and the rib tumors showed the same immunohistochemistrical expression. It is noteworthy that the tumor cells of the rib lesion showed increased cellularity, and its Ki-67 activity was higher as compared with the abdominal tumor, suggestive of progression of malignancy of SEF

FOLFIRI Is Tolerable after Subtotal Colectomy – A Patient with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis Who Developed Advanced Rectal Cancer

A 40-year-old female with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) had a subtotal colectomy at 16 years of age. At 39 years, she had low anterior resection due to advanced rectal carcinoma. Thereafter, we administrated per os uracil and tegafur for 9 months. Metastatic rectal carcinoma was detected in the liver (S8) by computed tomography (CT). 2-[(18)F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) data did not show any other metastasis. This report presents a first case of a patient undergoing subtotal colectomy administered FOLFIRI (CPT-11 180 mg/m2 as a 90-minute infusion on day 1; leucovorin 400 mg/m2 as a 2-hour infusion during CPT-11, immediately followed by 5-FU bolus 400 mg/m2 and 46-hour continuous infusion of 2,400 mg/m2 every 2 weeks). This regimen was administered without grade 3 or 4 of any adverse reaction for 6 months, although there was a possibility that this patient with subtotal colectomy may have the cause for severe diarrhea. Further investigations are needed to assess the safety in clinical trials of FOLFIRI regimen for patients with subtotal colectomy
