    Spin-Pumping-Induced Inverse Spin Hall Effect in Nb/Ni80Fe20 Bilayers and its Strong Decay Across the Superconducting Transition Temperature

    We quantify the spin Hall angle θSH and spin-diffusion length lsd of Nb from inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) measurements in Nb/Ni80Fe20 bilayers under ferromagnetic resonance. By varying the Nb thickness tNb and comparing to a Ni80Fe20/Pt reference sample, room temperature values of θSH and lsd for Nb are estimated to be approximately -0.001 and 30 nm, respectively. We also investigate the ISHE as a function of temperature T for different tNb. Above the superconducting transition temperature Tc of Nb, a clear tNb-dependent T evolution of the ISHE is observed whereas below Tc, the ISHE voltage drops rapidly and is below the sensitivity of our measurement setup at a lower T. This suggests the strong decay of the quasiparticle (QP) charge-imbalance relaxation length across Tc, as supported by an additional investigation of the ISHE in a different sample geometry along with model calculation. Our finding suggests careful consideration should be made when developing superconductor spin Hall devices that intend to utilize QP-mediated spin-to-charge interconversion.This work is supported by EPSRC Programme Grant EP/N017242/1

    Exchange-field enhancement of superconducting spin pumping

    A recent ferromagnetic resonance study [Jeon et al., Nat. Mater. 17, 499 (2018)] has reported that spin pumping into a singlet superconductor (Nb) can be greatly enhanced over the normal state when the Nb is coupled to a large spin-orbit-coupling (SOC) spin sink such as Pt. This behavior has been explained in terms of the generation of spin-polarized triplet supercurrents via SOC at the Nb/Pt interface, acting in conjunction with a nonlocally induced magnetic exchange field. Here we report the effect of adding a ferromagnet (Fe) to act as an internal source of an additional exchange field to the adjacent Pt spin sink. This dramatically enhances the spin pumping efficiency in the superconducting state compared with either Pt and Fe separately, demonstrating the critical role of the exchange field in generating superconducting spin currents in the Nb

    Abrikosov vortex nucleation and its detrimental effect on superconducting spin pumping in Pt/Nb/Ni80Fe20/Nb/Pt proximity structures

    We report Abrikosov vortex nucleation in Pt / Nb / Ni 80 Fe 20 / Nb / Pt proximity-coupled structures under oblique ferromagnetic resonance that turns out to be detrimental to superconducting spin pumping. By measuring an out-of-plane field-angle θ H dependence and comparing with Pt-absent control samples, we show that as θ H increases, the degree of enhancement (suppression) of spin pumping efficiency in the superconducting state for the Pt-present (Pt-absent) sample diminishes and it reverts to the normal state value at θ H = 90 ∘ . This can be explained in terms of a substantial out-of-plane component of the resonance field for the Ni 80 Fe 20 layer (with in-plane magnetization anisotropy and high aspect ratio) that approaches the upper critical field of the Nb, turning a large fraction of the singlet superconductor volume into the normal state

    Relationship of Genotype, Phenotype, and Treatment in Dopa-Responsive Dystonia: MDSGene Review

    Background Pathogenic variants in 5 genes (GCH1, TH, PTS, SPR, and QDPR), involved in dopamine/tetrahydrobiopterin biosynthesis or recycling, have been linked to Dopa-responsive dystonia (DRD). Diagnosis and treatment are often delayed due to high between- and within-group variability. Objectives Comprehensively analyzed individual genotype, phenotype, treatment response, and biochemistry information. Methods 734 DRD patients and 151 asymptomatic GCH1 mutation carriers were included using an MDSGene systematic literature review and an automated classification approach to distinguish between different forms of monogenic DRDs. Results Whereas dystonia, L-Dopa responsiveness, early age at onset, and diurnal fluctuations were identified as red flags, parkinsonism without dystonia was rarely reported (11%) and combined with dystonia in only 18% of patients. While sex was equally distributed in autosomal recessive DRD, there was female predominance in autosomal dominant DYT/PARK-GCH1 patients accompanied by a lower median age at onset and more dystonia in females compared to males. Accordingly, the majority of asymptomatic heterozygous GCH1 mutation carriers (>8 years of age) were males. Multiple other subgroup-specific characteristics were identified, showing high accuracy in the automated classification approach: Seizures and microcephaly were mostly seen in DYT/PARK-PTS, autonomic symptoms appeared commonly in DYT/PARK-TH and DYT/PARK-PTS, and sleep disorders and oculogyric crises in DYT/PARK-SPR. Biochemically, homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in CSF were reduced in most DRDs, but neopterin and biopterin were increased only in DYT/PARK-PTS and DYT/PARK-SPR. Hyperphenylalaninemia was seen in DYT/PARK-PTS, DYT/PARK-QDPR, and rarely reported in autosomal recessive DYT/PARK-GCH1. Conclusions Our indicators will help to specify diagnosis and accelerate start of treatment. © 2021 The Authors.     Effect of Meissner Screening and Trapped Magnetic Flux on Magnetization Dynamics in Thick Nb/Ni80Fe20/Nb Trilayers

    We investigate the influence of Meissner screening and trapped magnetic flux on magnetization dynamics for a Ni80Fe20 film sandwiched between two thick Nb layers (100 nm) using broadband (5–20 GHz) ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy. Below the superconducting transition Tc of Nb, significant zero-frequency line broadening (5–6 mT) and dc-resonance field shift (50 mT) to a low field are both observed if the Nb thickness is comparable to the London penetration depth of Nb films (≥100 nm). We attribute the observed peculiar behaviors to the increased incoherent precession near the Ni80Fe20/Nb interfaces and the effectively focused magnetic flux in the middle Ni80Fe20 caused by strong Meissner screening and (defect-)trapped flux of the thick adjacent Nb layers. This explanation is supported by static magnetic properties of the samples and comparison with FMR data on thick Nb/Ni80Fe20 bilayers. Great care should, therefore, be taken in the analysis of FMR response in ferromagnetic Josephson structures with thick superconductors, a fundamental property for high-frequency device applications of spin-polarized supercurrents

    Spin transport parameters of NbN thin films characterized by spin pumping experiments

    We present measurements of ferromagnetic resonance driven spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect in NbN/Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) bilayers. A clear enhancement of the (effective) Gilbert damping constant of the thin-film YIG was observed due to the presence of the NbN spin sink. By varying the NbN thickness and employing spin-diffusion theory, we have estimated the room-temperature values of the spin-diffusion length and the spin Hall angle in NbN to be 14 nm and −1.1×10−2, respectively. Furthermore, we have determined the spin mixing conductance of the NbN/YIG interface to be 10nm−2. The experimental quantification of these spin transport parameters is an important step towards the development of superconducting spintronic devices involving NbN thin films

    Identification of a Key Amino Acid of LuxS Involved in AI-2 Production in Campylobacter jejuni

    Autoinducer-2 (AI-2) mediated quorum sensing has been associated with the expression of virulence factors in a number of pathogenic organisms and has been demonstrated to play a role in motility and cytolethal distending toxin (cdt) production in Campylobacter jejuni. We have initiated the work to determine the molecular basis of AI-2 synthesis and the biological functions of quorum sensing in C. jejuni. In this work, two naturally occurring variants of C. jejuni 81116 were identified, one producing high-levels of AI-2 while the other is defective in AI-2 synthesis. Sequence analysis revealed a G92D mutation in the luxS gene of the defective variant. Complementation of the AI-2− variant with a plasmid encoded copy of the wild-type luxS gene or reversion of the G92D mutation by site-directed mutagenesis fully restored AI-2 production by the variant. These results indicate that the G92D mutation alone is responsible for the loss of AI-2 activity in C. jejuni. Kinetic analyses showed that the G92D LuxS has a ∼100-fold reduced catalytic activity relative to the wild-type enzyme. Findings from this study identify a previously undescribed amino acid that is essential for AI-2 production by LuxS and provide a unique isogenic pair of naturally occurring variants for us to dissect the functions of AI-2 mediated quorum sensing in Campylobacter

    The 3' region of Human Papillomavirus type 16 early mRNAs decrease expression

    BACKGROUND: High risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infects mucosal surfaces and HR-HPV infection is required for development of cervical cancer. Accordingly, enforced expression of the early HR-HPV proteins can induce immortalisation of human cells. In most cervical cancers and cervical cancer cell lines the HR-HPV double stranded DNA genome has been integrated into the host cell genome. METHODS: We have used a retroviral GUS reporter system to generate pools of stably transfected HaCaT and SiHa cells. The HPV-16 early sequences that are deleted upon integration of the HPV-16 genome was inserted into the 3' UTR of the reporter mRNA. Pools containing thousands of independent integrations were tested for the steady state levels of the reporter mRNA by Real Time PCR and reporter protein by a GUS enzymatic activity assays. In addition, we tested the cellular distribution and half lives of the reporter mRNAs. The integrity of the reporter mRNAs were tested by northern blotting. RESULTS: We show that the 3' region of the HPV-16 early mRNAs (HPV-16 nucleotide (nt.) 2582–4214) act in cis to decrease both mRNA and protein levels. This region seems to affect transcription from the exogenous minimal CMV promoter or processing of the reporter mRNA. The observed repression was most pronounced at the protein level, suggesting that this sequence may also affect translation. For the HPV types: 2, 6, 11, 13, 18, 30, 31, and 35 we have investigated the regulatory effect of the regions corresponding to the HPV-16 nt. 3358–4214. For all types, except HPV-18, the region was found to repress expression by posttranscriptional mechanisms. CONCLUSION: We find that the 3' region of HPV-16 early mRNAs interfere with gene expression. It is therefore possible that the deletion of the 3' part of early HPV-16 mRNAs occurring during cervical oncogenesis could contribute to transformation of cells through deregulation of the viral oncogene synthesis. Moreover, we find that the corresponding region from several other HPV types also repress expression, suggesting that the repression by this region may be a general feature of the HPV life cycle

    A systematic review on 'Foveal Crowding' in visually impaired children and perceptual learning as a method to reduce Crowding

    Contains fulltext : 102577.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)Background - This systematic review gives an overview of foveal crowding (the inability to recognize objects due to surrounding nearby contours in foveal vision) and possible interventions. Foveal crowding can have a major effect on reading rate and deciphering small pieces of information from busy visual scenes. Three specific groups experience more foveal crowding than adults with normal vision (NV): 1) children with NV, 2) visually impaired (VI ) children and adults and 3) children with cerebral visual impairment (CVI). The extent and magnitude of foveal crowding as well as interventions aimed at reducing crowding were investigated in this review. The twofold goal of this review is : [A] to compare foveal crowding in children with NV, VI children and adults and CVI children and [B] to compare interventions to reduce crowding. Methods - Three electronic databases were used to conduct the literature search: PubMed, PsycINFO (Ovid), and Cochrane. Additional studies were identified by contacting experts. Search terms included visual perception, contour interaction, crowding, crowded, and contour interactions. Results - Children with normal vision show an extent of contour interaction over an area 1.5-3x as large as that seen in adults NV. The magnitude of contour interaction normally ranges between 1-2 lines on an acuity chart and this magnitude is even larger when stimuli are arranged in a circular configuration. Adults with congenital nystagmus (CN) show interaction areas that are 2x larger than those seen adults with NV. The magnitude of the crowding effect is also 2x as large in individuals with CN as in individuals with NV. Finally, children with CVI experience a magnitude of the crowding effect that is 3x the size of that experienced by adults with NV. Conclusions - The methodological heterogeneity, the diversity in paradigms used to measure crowding, made it impossible to conduct a meta-analysis. This is the first systematic review to compare crowding ratios and it shows that charts with 50% interoptotype spacing were most sensitive to capture crowding effects. The groups that showed the largest crowding effects were individuals with CN, VI adults with central scotomas and children with CVI. Perceptual Learning seems to be a promising technique to reduce excessive foveal crowding effects.14 p
