    Homogeneous and inhomogeneous contributions to the luminescence linewidth of point defects in amorphous solids: Quantitative assessment based on time-resolved emission spectroscopy

    The article describes an experimental method that allows to estimate the inhomogeneous and homogeneous linewidths of the photoluminescence band of a point defect in an amorphous solid. We performed low temperature time-resolved luminescence measurements on two defects chosen as model systems for our analysis: extrinsic Oxygen Deficient Centers (ODC(II)) in amorphous silica and F+ 3 centers in crystalline Lithium Fluoride. Measurements evidence that only defects embedded in the amorphous matrix feature a dependence of the radiative decay lifetime on the emission energy and a time dependence of the first moment of the emission band. A theoretical model is developed to link these properties to the structural disorder typical of amorphous solids. Specifically, the observations on ODC(II) are interpreted by introducing a gaussian statistical distribution of the zero phonon line energy position. Comparison with the results obtained on F+ 3 crystalline defects strongly confirms the validity of the model. By analyzing experimental data within this frame, we obtain separate estimations of the homogenous and inhomogeneous contributions to the measured total linewidth of ODC(II), which results to be mostly inhomogeneous.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    A novel concept of screening for subgrouping factors for the association between socioeconomic status and respiratory allergies

    Background: The new subgroup screening tool "subscreen" aims to understand the unclear and complex association between socioeconomic status (SES) and childhood allergy. This software R package has been successfully used in clinical trials but not in large population-based studies. Objective: To screen and identify subgrouping factors explaining their impact on the association between SES and respiratory allergies in childhood and youth. Methods: Using the national German childhood and youth survey dataset (KiGGS Wave 2), we included 56 suspected subgrouping factors to investigate the association between SES (low vs. high) and allergic rhinitis and/or asthma in an exploratory manner. The package enabled a comprehensive overview of odds ratios when considering the SES impact per subgroup and analogously all disease proportions per subgroup. Result: Among the 56 candidate factors, striking subgrouping factors were identified; e.g., if mothers were younger and in the low SES group, their children had a higher risk of asthma. In addition children of the teen's age were associated with increased risks in the low SES group. For the crude proportions, factors such as (parental) smoking or having had no "contact with farm animals" were identified as strong risk factors for rhinitis. Significance: The "subscreen" package enabled the detection of notable subgroups for further investigations exemplarily for similar epidemiological research questions

    Combining EfficientNet and Vision Transformers for Video Deepfake Detection

    Deepfakes are the result of digital manipulation to obtain credible videos in order to deceive the viewer. This is done through deep learning techniques based on autoencoders or GANs that become more accessible and accurate year after year, resulting in fake videos that are very difficult to distinguish from real ones. Traditionally, CNN networks have been used to perform deepfake detection, with the best results obtained using methods based on EfficientNet B7. In this study, we combine various types of Vision Transformers with a convolutional EfficientNet B0 used as a feature extractor, obtaining comparable results with some very recent methods that use Vision Transformers. Differently from the state-of-the-art approaches, we use neither distillation nor ensemble methods. The best model achieved an AUC of 0.951 and an F1 score of 88.0%, very close to the state-of-the-art on the DeepFake Detection Challenge (DFDC)

    Polychromatic femtosecond fluorescence studies of metal–polypyridine complexes in solution

    Femtosecond-resolved broadband fluorescence studies are reported for[M(bpy)3]2+ (M = Fe, Ru), RuN3 and RuN719 complexes in solution. We investigated the pump wavelength dependence of the fluorescence of aqueous [Fe(bpy)3]2+ and the solvent and ligand dependence of the fluorescence of Ru-complexes excited at 400 nm. For all complexes, the 1MLCT fluorescence appears at zero time delay with a mirror-like image with respect to the absorption. It decays in 630–45 fs due to intersystem crossing to the 3MLCT states, but a longer lived component of 190 fs additionally shows up in RuN719 and RuN3. No solvent effects are detected. The very early dynamics are characterized by internal conversion (IC) and intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR) processes on a time scale which we estimate to 610 fs using the 1MLCT lifetime as an internal clock

    Photoluminescence dispersion as a probe of structural inhomogeneity in silica

    We report time-resolved photoluminescence spectra of point defects in amorphous silicon dioxide (silica), in particular the decay kinetics of the emission signals of extrinsic Oxygen Deficient Centres of the second type from singlet and directly-excited triplet states are measured and used as a probe of structural inhomogeneity. Luminescence activity in sapphire (α\alpha-Al2_2O3_3) is studied as well and used as a model system to compare the optical properties of defects in silica with those of defects embedded in a crystalline matrix. Only for defects in silica, we observe a variation of the decay lifetimes with emission energy and a time dependence of the first moment of the emission bands. These features are analyzed within a theoretical model with explicit hypothesis about the effect introduced by the disorder of vitreous systems. Separate estimations of the homogenous and inhomogeneous contributions to the measured emission linewidth are obtained: it is found that inhomogeneous effects strongly condition both the triplet and singlet luminescence activities of oxygen deficient centres in silica, although the degree of inhomogeneity of the triplet emission turns out to be lower than that of the singlet emission. Inhomogeneous effects appear to be negligible in sapphire

    Photoluminescence of Carbon Dots Embedded in a SiO2 Matrix

    We synthetized carbon dots by a pyrolitic method, and studied their photoluminescence in aqueous environment and upon trapping in a solid matrix. To this aim, we devised a facile procedure allowing to embed the dots in amorphous SiO2, without the need of any pre-functionalization of the nanoparticles, and capable of yielding a brightly photoluminescent monolith. Experimental data reveal a remarkable similarity between the emission properties of carbon dots in water and in SiO2, suggesting that the chromophores responsible of the photoluminescence undergo only weak interactions with the environment. Time-resolved photoluminescence data reveal that the typical photoluminescence tunability of these dots mostly arises, in the present case, from the co-existence of two independent emission bands. These two signals have different emission peak positions (2.8-2.9 and 2.2-2.3 eV respectively) and decay lifetimes (7.0 and 9.0 ns respectively), while their intensity ratio is controlled by the excitation wavelength
