    A K-Theoretic Proof of Boutet de Monvel's Index Theorem for Boundary Value Problems

    We study the C*-closure A of the algebra of all operators of order and class zero in Boutet de Monvel's calculus on a compact connected manifold X with non-empty boundary. We find short exact sequences in K-theory 0->K_i(C(X))->K_i(A/K)->K_{1-i}(C_0(T*X'))->0, i= 0,1, which split, where K denotes the compact ideal and T*X' the cotangent bundle of the interior of X. Using only simple K-theoretic arguments and the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem, we show that the Fredholm index of an elliptic element in A is given as the composition of the topological index with mapping K_1(A/K)->K_0(C_0(T*X')) defined above.     The bound state of constituent quarks forming a QqqQqq composite baryon is investigated in a QCD-inspired effective light-front model. The light-front Faddeev equations are derived and solved numerically. The masses of the spin 1/2 low-lying states of the nucleon, Λ0\Lambda^0, Λc+\Lambda^+_c and Λb0\Lambda^0_b are found and compared to the experimental data.     Ripples in Tapped or Blown Powder

    We observe ripples forming on the surface of a granular powder in a container submitted from below to a series of brief and distinct shocks. After a few taps, the pattern turns out to be stable against any further shock of the same amplitude. We find experimentally that the characteristic wavelength of the pattern is proportional to the amplitude of the shocks. Starting from consideration involving Darcy's law for air flow through the porous granulate and avalanche properties, we build up a semi-quantitative model which fits satisfactorily the set of experimental observations as well as a couple of additional experiments.Comment: 7 pages, four postscript figures, submitted PRL 11/19/9

    Este trabalho foi executado pela Universidade Federal do Acre (Ufac) em cooperação com a Fundação de Tecnologia do Estado do Acre (Funtac), Embrapa Acre e Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). O levantamento de solos, em nível de reconhecimento de baixa intensidade, compreende a Reserva Extrativista do Alio Juruá, localizada entre as coordenadas geográficas de 08 0 45' e 09 0 45' 8, de latitude sul e 72 0 00' e 730 00' W, longitude a oeste. A metodologia utilizada é a mesma que a Embrapa Solos vem utilizando em estudos similares. Realizaram-se análises físicas e químicas no Laboratório de Solos da Embrapa Acre e as análises de ataque sulfúrico no laboratório da Embrapa Solos. No desenvolvimento da prospecção pedológica foram utilizadas imagens TM 345/Landsat - 5, 1992, tratadas no Laboratório de Processamento de Informações Georreferenciadas da Unicamp, na escala de 1:100.000 e 1:200.000. Os mapas finais de solos foram elaborados na escala de 1:250.000, com unidades de mapeamento em associações, dada a limitação da escala. Os principais solos encontrados na área são: Alissolos, Luvissolos, Cambissolos, Chemossolos, Gleissolos e Neossolos. Exduindo a alta fertilidade, os solos da Reserva Extrativista do Alto Juruá apresentam sérias restrições de uso quando se consideram as condições de relevo em que estão inseridos. A área apresenta relevo ondulado a forte ondulado e solos com alto gradiente textural, implicando em alta susceptibilidade à erosão. Observou-se, em algumas áreas de relevo forte ondulado e sobre a ocorrência de Cambissolo e floresta tropical aberta, erosão laminar ligeira. No caso de retirada da floresta natural, este processo erosivo irá se intensificar, causando danos irreversíveis ao solo e, conseqüentemente, ao ambiente.bitstream/item/116590/1/6765.pd

    Immature embryo rescue and in vitro development evaluation of intraspecific hybrids from Brazilian seedless grapevine Superior Ă— Thompson clones.

    The fruit production for export is an economically significant activity in the Valley of SĂŁo Francisco River, especially in the irrigated lands of Petrolina-PE/Juazeiro-BA, Brazil. The development of new genetic material most suitable to the tropical climate and the demands of the consumer market have led to the selection of new seedless grapes cultivars. In this case, the use of the embryo rescue technique has produced satisfactory results for obtaining such materials, especially in the semiarid region. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro development of intraspecific hybrids of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.), derived from the rescue of immature embryos resultant from the crossing of Superior Seedless and Thompson Seedless Brazilian clones. To establish and develop the cultivation, the culture media was supplemented with 30 g/L sucrose, 0.1 g/L myo-inositol, 0.002 g/L glycine, 0.1 mg/L indoleacetic acid (IAA), 6.5 g/L of agar, adjusted pH to 5.7. The experiment was evaluated after 90 days. The variables measured were: number of nodes, number of leaves, plant height (cm), number of roots and length (cm) of the root system and internodes. The period of 60 days of in vitro culture of ovules resulted in the highest values of embryos (about 50%), as well as better characterized developmental stages with higher germination (47.3%). The three types of hybrid grapes evaluated in micropropagation showed very similar values of the measured parameters, even having originated from embryos of different developmental stages
