    An assessment of the value of pastoral development in Northland

    This paper presents the results of an economic study of farm development in Northland. In this study, records were collected of 32 dairy farm case histories which had increased butterfat production by 105% in an average of 6 years, and 18 sheep farm case histories for which wool production increased 116% over a 7-year period. Also included are data supplied by the Lands and Survey Department on the economic outcome of two land development blocks. In this paper, attention is focused on the cash costs and benefits of development and their valuation by economic methods. Nevertheless, the deficiencies of this approach are recognized, because cash costs and benefits are only one dimension of the outcome of development and the method used for valuing this outcome makes assumptions about the values of the farmer and society.This research was generously funded by the Commercial Rank of Australia to mark their 100th Anniversary

    Geochemical constraints on the origin of enigmatic cemented chalks, Norfolk, UK

    Very hard cemented chalk stacks and crusts found locally in the upper part of the Cretaceous Chalk of north Norfolk, UK, are related to solution features. The solution features, mainly pipes and caves, formed after deposition of the overlying Middle Pleistocene Wroxham Crag, probably by routing of sub-glacial, or glacial, melt-waters derived from late Pleistocene glaciers. New geochemical (particularly stable isotope) data shows that cementation of the chalks, although related spatially to the solution features, was not caused by glacier-derived waters. The carbon isotope composition of the chalk cements is typically around -9.5‰, indicative of biologically active soils. Moreover, the oxygen isotope compositions of the cements, around -5‰, are incompatible with water d18O values much below -9 to -10‰ (which probably precludes isotopically negative glacier-derived water), as resulting palaeo-temperatures are below zero. Taken together, the isotope data suggest chalk cementation occurred under interglacial conditions similar to the present. Dissolved calcium carbonate for cementation came from dissolution of reworked chalk in overlying MIS 12 glacial tills

    This paper represents part of a research on the economic and human aspects of farm development on Banks Peninsula. The aim is to allocate advisory officers to districts in such a way as to maximise the response in national farm efficiency. In this problem both human and economic factors have to be considered. The profitability to the nation and to the individual farmer are obviously important and this is reported here. Equally important is the rate at which farmers are likely to adopt the development programme advocated by advisory officers

    Estimating fuel channel bore from fuel grab load trace data

    Detailed measurements of the graphite core fuel channels are made by specialist inspection equipment during planned outages, typically every 18 months to 3 years. The bores of the graphite fuel bricks are obtained during these inspections and are used to provide important information about the health of the core. Additionally, less detailed online monitoring data is obtained much more frequently during refuelling events, called the fuel grab load trace (FGLT), which can be also used to infer the health of the graphite core. This paper describes the process of creating a model which isolates a component of the refuelling data and maps it directly to dimensional measurements of fuel channel bore. The model is created from a combination of the theoretical understanding of the physical interactions of the fuel stringer during refuelling events and several years of refuelling and inspection data to estimate suitable model parameters. Initially the model created was a coarse estimation of FGLT to fuel bore dimension but through refinements a much more accurate model has been created. An application of this model is shown through a case study of a recent outage where estimations were made on refuelling data and were compared to previously unseen inspection data

    Evolution of eukaryotic transcription : insights from the genome of Giardia lamblia

The definitive version was published in Genome Research 14 (2004): 1537-1547, doi:10.1101/gr.2256604.The Giardia lamblia genome sequencing project affords us a unique opportunity to conduct comparative analyses of core cellular systems between early and late-diverging eukaryotes on a genome-wide scale. We report a survey to identify canonical transcription components in Giardia, focusing on RNA polymerase (RNAP) subunits and transcription-initiation factors. Our survey revealed that Giardia contains homologs to 21 of the 28 polypeptides comprising eukaryal RNAPI, RNAPII, and RNAPIII; six of the seven RNAP subunits without giardial homologs are polymerase specific. Components of only four of the 12 general transcription initiation factors have giardial homologs. Surprisingly, giardial TATA-binding protein (TBP) is highly divergent with respect to archaeal and higher eukaryotic TBPs, and a giardial homolog of transcription factor IIB was not identified. We conclude that Giardia represents a transition during the evolution of eukaryal transcription systems, exhibiting a relatively complete set of RNAP subunits and a rudimentary basal initiation apparatus for each transcription system. Most class-specific RNAP subunits and basal initiation factors appear to have evolved after the divergence of Giardia from the main eukaryotic line of descent.
