MESMO global model output for glacial simulations with dynamic C:N:P ratios

    Get PDF
Dataset: MESMO glacial CNPModel outputs archived have a complete suite of biogeochemical state variables in the 3D global ocean domain. They include temperature, salinity, nutrients (PO4, NO3, Fe, Si), carbon pools and their isotopes (DIC, DOC, POC, 13C and 14C) oxygen, and alkalinity. Stoichiometric ratios of phytoplankton functional types (C:P, C:N, N:P) are also included. Rates and fluxes archived include production (NPP, export) by phytoplankton types and nitrogen fixation and denitrification. After 5000 years, almost all properties reach steady state, with the except nitrogen fixation and denitrification in some runs For a complete list of measurements, refer to the full dataset description in the supplemental file 'Dataset_description.pdf'. A psychological effect of having a potentially viable sequestration strategy

    Get PDF
Purposeful carbon sequestration by direct injection into the deep ocean can store carbon for centuries. Even after injected carbon begins to leak back out to the atmosphere, much of the injected carbon will remain sequestered because of the acid neutralizing capacity of seawater. The slow leakage that occurs centuries into the future can give a false sense of security that the carbon and climate problem is under control. If this were to cause policy makers to become less vigilant about reducing the total emissions of anthropogenic carbon, our descendants would be penalized with having much higher carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere when leakage begins. This "carelessness feedback" would apply to other forms of sequestration that are not permanent. To avoid falling into this trap requires generations of policy makers to be aware of the feedback and committed to intergenerational equity

<Original Paper>Effects of Intervention on Seating for Elderly Wheelchair Users

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to report the results of intervention on the fit of seating for elderly wheelchair users who use foot propulsion. The elderly users, who lived in care facilities, were provided with improved wheelchairs for about two months while we investigated the seating posture, independent mobility, and degree of satisfaction during use. The results of the investigation are as follows: (1) Seating pressure for the subjects who used the fitted wheelchair tended to decrease. (2) Independent mobility for the subjects using the fitted wheelchair tended to decrease. On the other hand, cases where the independent mobility improved were also observed. (3) Subjects were satisfied with the comfortable seating of the improved wheelchair. However, the small-sized elderly subjects were dissatisfied with the transfer, the meal action, and the fitted seat
