    Void-induced cross slip of screw dislocations in fcc copper

    Pinning interaction between a screw dislocation and a void in fcc copper is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulation. A screw dislocation bows out to undergo depinning on the original glide plane at low temperatures, where the behavior of the depinning stress is consistent with that obtained by a continuum model. If the temperature is higher than 300 K, the motion of a screw dislocation is no longer restricted to a single glide plane due to cross slip on the void surface. Several depinning mechanisms that involve multiple glide planes are found. In particular, a depinning mechanism that produces an intrinsic prismatic loop is found. We show that these complex depinning mechanisms significantly increase the depinning stress

    Designing Trustworthy Product Recommendation Virtual Agents Operating Positive Emotion and Having Copious Amount of Knowledge

    Anthropomorphic agents used in online-shopping need to be trusted by users so that users feel comfortable buying products. In this paper, we propose a model for designing trustworthy agents by assuming two factors of trust, that is, emotion and knowledgeableness perceived. Our hypothesis is that when a user feels happy and perceives an agent as being highly knowledgeable, a high level of trust results between the user and agent. We conducted four experiments with participants to verify this hypothesis by preparing transition operators utilizing emotional contagion and knowledgeable utterances. As a result, we verified that users' internal states transitioned as expected and that the two factors significantly influenced their trust states

    Intubation during a medevac flight: safety and effect on total prehospital time in the helicopter emergency medical service system

    Introduction The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) commonly intubates patients who require advanced airway support prior to takeoff. In-flight intubation (IFI) is avoided because it is considered difficult due to limited space, difficulty communicating, and vibration in flight. However, IFI may shorten the total prehospital time. We tested whether IFI can be performed safely by the HEMS. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study in adult patients transported from 2010 to 2017 who received prehospital, non-emergent intubation from a single HEMS. We divided the cohort in two groups, patients intubated during flight (flight group, FG) and patients intubated before takeoff (ground group, GG). The primary outcome was the proportion of successful intubations. Secondary outcomes included total prehospital time and the incidence of complications. Results We analyzed 376 patients transported during the study period, 192 patients in the FG and 184 patients in the GG. The intubation success rate did not differ between the two groups (FG 189/192 [98.4%] vs. GG 179/184 [97.3%],p = 0.50). There were also no differences in hypoxia (FG 4/117 [3.4%] vs. GG 4/95 [4.2%],p = 1.00) or hypotension (FG 6/117 [5.1%] vs. GG 5/95 [5.3%],p = 1.00) between the two groups. Scene time and total prehospital time were shorter in the FG (scene time 7 min vs. 14 min,p < 0.001; total prehospital time 33.5 min vs. 40.0 min,p < 0.001). Conclusions IFI was safely performed with high success rates, similar to intubation on the ground, without increasing the risk of hypoxia or hypotension. IFI by experienced providers shortened transportation time, which may improve patient outcomes

PCC6803 [Yoshihara et al. (2000) Plant Cell Physiol. 41: 1299]. The mRNA of S. elongatus pixJ (SepixJ) was expressed in vivo as a part of the product of an operon. SePixJ was detected exclusively in the membrane fraction after cell fractionation. Immunogold labeling of SePixJ in ultra-thin sections indicated that it existed only in both ends of the rod-shaped cell; probably bound with the cytoplasmic membrane.publishersversionPeer reviewe

    Confluent hepatic fibrosis in liver cirrhosis: Possible relation with middle hepatic venous drainage

    Purpose: Our aim was to retrospectively analyze the location of confluent hepatic fibrosis in relation to the portal and hepatic venous anatomy using multidetector computed tomography (CT) and to clarify the influence of the hepatic venous drainage on confluent fibrosis. Materials and methods: The study population consisted of 879 patients diagnosed with cirrhosis: 539 men and 340 women (65.9 ± 10.6 years) and 633 with Child-Pugh class A, 161 with class B, and 85 with class C. The cause of cirrhosis was hepatitis C (n = 528) and hepatitis B (n = 122) virus infection, alcoholism (n = 114), and others (n = 115). The confluent fibrosis was diagnosed using CT images according to previous reports and statistically analyzed (p < 0.05). Results: Thirty-five confluent fibrosis lesions in 30 patients (3.4 %) were identified. The predictive factors were alcoholic cirrhosis [odds ratio (OR), 7.25; p < 0.0001], Child-Pugh class C (OR, 6.95; p < 0.0001), and Child-Pugh class B (OR, 2.91; p < 0.0023). Confluent fibrosis was most frequently seen in the middle hepatic venous drainage area (n = 21) or at the boundary between the medial and anterior segments (n = 17), and each distribution of the location of confluent fibrosis was significantly unequal (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Confluent fibrosis was most commonly located in the middle hepatic venous drainage area. © 2013 Japan Radiological Society

    Evaluation and Clinical Validity of a New Questionnaire for Mikulicz's Disease

    Objectives. The characteristic features of Mikulicz's disease (MD) are diffuse enlargement of the lacrimal and submandibular glands, elevated levels of serum immunoglobulin (Ig)G4, and abundant infiltration of IgG4-positive plasmacytes into both glands. No disease index is available to properly evaluate MD, so we developed a functional assessment of MD, the Mikulicz's disease activity questionnaire (MAQ), and evaluated its clinical efficacy. Methods. We selected 18 patients who were either being treated for MD or who had presented with recurrence. The patients completed a self-assessment and were scored according to the MAQ sheet during each visit between December 2009 and August 2011. Assessment items were in regard to increases or decreases in lacrimal and salivary gland enlargement and severity of sicca symptoms. Results. On the first visits, MAQ scores were high, but scores decreased rapidly as treatment progressed. When doses of glucocorticoid were reduced, some patients showed increased scores. Dry-symptom scores increased initially. MAQ scores for patients with recurrent MD gradually increased over several months before relapse. However, some patients displayed no elevation in MAQ scores due to relapses at other sites. Conclusion. MAQ score can be used to quantify flares and treatment response and is useful for functional assessment of MD

    Stroboscopic Time-of-Flight Neutron Diffraction in Long Pulsed Magnetic Fields

    We present proof-of-principle experiments of stroboscopic time-of-flight (TOF) neutron diffraction in long pulsed magnetic fields. By utilizing electric double-layer capacitors, we developed a long pulsed magnet for neutron diffraction measurements, which generates pulsed magnetic fields with the full widths at the half maximum of more than 10210^2 ms. The field variation is slow enough to be approximated as a steady field within the time scale of a polychromatic neutron pulse passing through a sample placed in a distance of the order of 10110^1 m from the neutron source. This enables us to efficiently explore the reciprocal space using a wide range of neutron wavelength in high magnetic fields. We applied this technique to investigate field-induced magnetic phases in the triangular lattice antiferromagnets CuFe1x_{1-x}Gax_xO2_2 (x=0,0.035x=0, 0.035).Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    The "Yin-Yang Grid": An Overset Grid in Spherical Geometry

    A new kind of overset grid, named Yin-Yang grid, for spherical geometry is proposed. The Yin-Yang grid is composed of two identical component grids that are combined in a complemental way to cover a spherical surface with partial overlap on their boundaries. Each component grid is a low latitude part of the latitude-longitude grid. Therefore the grid spacing is quasi-uniform and the metric tensors are simple and analytically known. One can directly apply mathematical and numerical resources that have been written in the spherical polar coordinates or latitude-longitude grid. The complemental combination of the two identical component grids enables us to make efficient and concise programs. Simulation codes for geodynamo and mantle convection simulations using finite difference scheme based on the Yin-Yang grid are developed and tested. The Yin-Yang grid is suitable for massively parallel computers.Comment: 9 figure
