Infrared Imaging of z=2.43 Radio Galaxy B3 0731+438 with the Subaru Telescope - Detection of Hα\alpha Ionization Cones of a Powerful Radio Galaxy

We report on infrared imaging observations of the z=2.429 radio galaxy B3 0731+438 with the Subaru telescope. The images were taken with the K'-band filter and the 2.25 um narrow-band filter to examine the structure and properties of the Ha+[N II] 6548,6583 emission-line components. The Ha+[N II] emission-line image shows biconical lobes with an extent of 40 kpc, which are aligned with the radio axis. The rest-frame equivalent widths of the emission lines at these cones are as large as 1100 AA, and can be well explained by a gas-cloud model photoionized by power-law continuum radiation. The isotropic ionizing photon luminosity necessary to ionize the hydrogen gas in these cones amounts to 1e57(photons/s), which is larger than that in the majority of radio-loud QSOs. From these results, we propose that the Ha alignment effect in this object is produced by biconical gas clouds, which are swept up by the passage of radio jets, and are ionized by strong UV radiation from a hidden AGN. The continuum image consists of two components, a stellar-like point source and an extended diffuse galaxy. These are supposed to be a type-2 AGN and its host galaxy. The SED is fitted by a combination of spectra of a reddened dust-scattered AGN and an instantaneous starburst population of 500 Myr old. The stellar mass of the galaxy is estimated to be 3e11 M_solar, which is as large as that of typical 3C radio galaxies at z=1.Comment: 12 pages, 4 Postscript figures, uses PASJ2.sty, PASJ95.sty, PASJadd.sty. Objective: To evaluate the clinical usefulness of laughter yoga for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a pulmonary rehabilitation setting. Design: Pilot study, with randomization of participants. Setting: This study was conducted by the Yoshino-cho National Health Insurance Yoshino Hospital Department of Internal Medicine. Participants: Stable outpatients with COPD (7 men and 1 woman, age 64 to 84 years) participated in the pulmonary rehabilitation program during a 2-week period. Intervention : The patients were divided into two groups based on a sealed envelope randomization method. The laughter yoga group had a 10-min laughter yoga session before exercise training. Patients in both groups had exercise training, educational programs, lung physiotherapy, and nutrition counseling. Outcome Measures: Health-related quality of life using the St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) Health Survey Short Form 36-item (SF-36), depression scores using the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), anxiety scores using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and spirometry, the 6-minute walk test and mMRC dyspnea scale results were evaluated before and at 2 weeks after the program in both groups. Results: There were significant improvements in the SGRQ impacts domain and the SF-36 general health domain in the laughter yoga group, while the SF-36 physical functioning domain significantly improved in the control group. SDS and STAI result did not significantly change in either group. Spirometry, the 6-minute walk test, and MRC dyspnea scale results did not significantly change in either group. Conclusion: Laughter yoga may improve the psychological quality of life in patients with COPD

Measurement of solubilities for rhodium complexes and phosphine ligands in supercritical carbon dioxide

金沢大学大学院理工研究域自然システム学系The solubilities of phosphine ligands and rhodium (Rh) complexes in supercritical carbon dioxide were measured with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy at 320 and 333 K and several pressures. Triphenylphosphine (TPP) and tris(p-trifluoromethylphenyl)-phosphine (TTFMPP) were selected as ligands for the Rh complex. The solubilities of the fluorinated ligands and complexes were compared with those of the non-fluorinated compounds. The solubilities of ligand increased up to 10 times by the fluorination. It was found that the solubilities of Rh complexes were enhanced up to 30 times by introducing trifluoromethyl group to the ligand. The experimental data was correlated by the Chrastil equation. The correlated results were in good agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, the solvation numbers of carbon dioxide around the ligands and Rh complexes were obtained from the slope of the Chrastil equation. The solvation number for the fluorinated compounds was about two and five times higher than those of the non-fluorinated ligand and complex, respectively. © 2007

Reduction of ischemic damage by application of insulin-like growth factor-1 in rat brain after transient ischemia.

In order to investigate a possible effect of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) on ischemic brain injury, IGF-1 was applied topically on the brain surface of reperfused rat brain after 60 min of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion. In contrast to the cases treated with vehicle, the infarct volume was greatly reduced at 24 h of reperfusion by the treatment with IGF-1. Immunohistochemical analysis in the middle cerebral artery territory showed that Caspase-3 staining was markedly reduced in the cases with IGF-1 treatment, but 72-kDa heat shock protein staining remained almost unchanged. The present results suggest that treatment with IGF-1 exerts a significant effect on ameliorating brain injury after transient focal brain ischemia. Moreover, this effect is greatly associated with the reduction of Caspase-3 staining, but is only minimally associated with a decreasd stress response at the cellular level.</p

Overexpression of the JmjC histone demethylase KDM5B in human carcinogenesis: involvement in the proliferation of cancer cells through the E2F/RB pathway.

BACKGROUND: Although an increasing number of histone demethylases have been identified and biochemically characterized, their biological functions largely remain uncharacterized, particularly in the context of human diseases such as cancer. We investigated the role of KDM5B, a JmjC histone demethylase, in human carcinogenesis. Quantitative RT-PCR and microarray analyses were used to examine the expression profiles of histone demethylases in clinical tissue samples. We also examined the functional effects of KDM5B on the growth of cancer cell lines treated with small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). Downstream genes and signal cascades induced by KDM5B expression were identified from Affymetrix Gene Chip experiments, and validated by real-time PCR and reporter assays. Cell cycle-dependent characteristics of KDM5B were identified by immunofluorescence and FACS. RESULTS: Quantitative RT-PCR analysis confirmed that expression levels of KDM5B are significantly higher in human bladder cancer tissues than in their corresponding non-neoplastic bladder tissues (P < 0.0001). The expression profile analysis of clinical tissues also revealed up-regulation of KDM5B in various kinds of malignancies. Transfection of KDM5B-specific siRNA into various bladder and lung cancer cell lines significantly suppressed the proliferation of cancer cells and increased the number of cells in sub-G1 phase. Microarray expression analysis indicated that E2F1 and E2F2 are downstream genes in the KDM5B pathway. CONCLUSIONS: Inhibition of KDM5B may affect apoptosis and reduce growth of cancer cells. Further studies will explore the pan-cancer therapeutic potential of KDM5B inhibition.RIGHTS : This article is licensed under the BioMed Central licence at http://www.biomedcentral.com/about/license which is similar to the 'Creative Commons Attribution Licence'.
