Algorithms for network piecewise-linear programs
In this paper a subarea of Piecewise-Linear Programming named network Piecewise-Linear Programming (NPLP) is discussed. Initially the problem formulation, main efinitins and related Concepts are presented. In the sequence of the paper, four specialized algorithms for NPLP, as well as the results of a preliminary computational study, are presented
Static and dynamic properties of vortices in anisotropic magnetic disks
We investigate the effect of the magnetic anisotropy () on the static
and dynamic properties of magnetic vortices in small disks. Our micromagnetic
calculations reveal that for a range of there is an enlargement of the
vortex core. We analyze the influence of on the dynamics of the vortex
core magnetization reversal under the excitation of a pulsed field. The
presence of , which leads to better resolved vortex structures, allows us
to discuss in more details the role played by the in-plane and perpendicular
components of the gyrotropic field during the vortex-antivortex nucleation and
annihilation.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The graphene sheet versus the 2DEG: a relativistic Fano spin-filter via STM and AFM tips
We explore theoretically the density of states (LDOS) probed by an STM tip of
2D systems hosting an adatom and a subsurface impurity, both capacitively
coupled to AFM tips and traversed by antiparallel magnetic fields. Two kinds of
setups are analyzed, a monolayer of graphene and a two-dimensional electron gas
(2DEG). The AFM tips set the impurity levels at the Fermi energy, where two
contrasting behaviors emerge: the Fano factor for the graphene diverges, while
in the 2DEG it approaches zero. As result, the spin-degeneracy of the LDOS is
lifted exclusively in the graphene system, in particular for the asymmetric
regime of Fano interference. The aftermath of this limit is a counterintuitive
phenomenon, which consists of a dominant Fano factor due to the subsurface
impurity even with a stronger STM-adatom coupling. Thus we find a full
polarized conductance, achievable just by displacing vertically the position of
the STM tip. To the best knowledge, our work is the first to propose the Fano
effect as the mechanism to filter spins in graphene. This feature arises from
the massless Dirac electrons within the band structure and allows us to employ
the graphene host as a relativistic Fano spin-filter
Complexity of colouring problems restricted to unichord-free and \{square,unichord\}-free graphs
A \emph{unichord} in a graph is an edge that is the unique chord of a cycle.
A \emph{square} is an induced cycle on four vertices. A graph is
\emph{unichord-free} if none of its edges is a unichord. We give a slight
restatement of a known structure theorem for unichord-free graphs and use it to
show that, with the only exception of the complete graph , every
square-free, unichord-free graph of maximum degree~3 can be total-coloured with
four colours. Our proof can be turned into a polynomial time algorithm that
actually outputs the colouring. This settles the class of square-free,
unichord-free graphs as a class for which edge-colouring is NP-complete but
total-colouring is polynomial
