    Rational Design of Electrochemiluminescent Devices

    ConspectusElectrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a light-emitting process which combines the intriguing merits of both electrochemical and chemiluminescent methods. It is an extensively used method especially in clinical analysis and biological research due to its high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, and good reliability. ECL devices are critical for the development and applications of ECL. Much effort has been expended to improve the sensitivity, portability, affordability, and throughput of new ECL devices, which allow ECL to adapt broad usage scenarios.In this Account, we summarize our efforts on the recent development of ECL devices including new electrodes, ECL devices based on a wireless power transfer (WPT) technique, and novel bipolar electrochemistry. As the essential components in the ECL devices, electrodes play an important role in ECL detection. We have significantly improved the sensitivity of luminol ECL detection of H2O2 by using a stainless steel electrode. By using semiconductor materials (e.g., silicon and BiVO4), we have exploited photoinduced ECL to generate intense emission at much lower potentials upon illumination. For convenience, portability, and disposability, ECL devices based on cheap WPT devices have been designed. A small diode has been employed to rectify alternating current into direct current to dramatically enhance ECL intensity, enabling sensitive ECL detection using a smart phone as a detector. Finally, we have developed several ECL devices based on bipolar electrochemistry in view of the convenience of multiplex ECL sensing using a bipolar electrode (BPE). On the basis of the wireless feature of BPE, we have employed movable BPEs (e.g., BPE swimmers and magnetic rotating BPE) for deep exploration of the motional and ECL properties of dynamic BPE systems. To make full use of the ECL solution, we have dispersed numerous micro-/nano-BPEs in solution to produce intense 3D ECL in the entire solution, instead of 2D ECL in conventional ECL devices. In addition, the interference of ECL noise from driving electrodes was minimized by introducing the stainless steel with a passivation layer as the driving electrode. To eliminate the need for the fabrication of electrode arrays and the interference from the driving electrode and to decrease the applied voltage, we develop a new-type BPE device consisting of a single-electrode electrochemical system (SEES) based on a resistance-induced potential difference. The SEES is fabricated easily by attaching a multiperforated plate to a single film electrode. It enables the simultaneous detection of many samples and analytes using only a single film electrode (e.g., screen-printed electrode) instead of electrode arrays. It is of great potential in clinical analysis especially for multiple-biomarker detection, drug screening, and biological studies. Looking forward, we believe that more ECL devices and related ECL materials and detection methods will be developed for a wide range of applications, such as in vitro diagnosis, point-of-care testing, high-throughput analysis, drug screening, biological study, and mechanism investigation.Conversion lumineuse par électrochimiluminescence photoinduit

    Eyes grow towards mild hyperopia rather than emmetropia in Chinese preschool children

    Purpose: To document one-year changes in refraction and refractive components in preschool children. Methods: Children, 3–5 years old, in the Jiading District, Shanghai, were followed for one year. At each visit, axial length (AL), refraction under cycloplegia (1% cyclopentolate), spherical dioptres (DS), cylinder dioptres (DC), spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and corneal curvature radius (CR) were measured. Results: The study included 458 right eyes of 458 children. The mean changes in DS, DC and SER were 0.02 ± 0.35 D, −0.02 ± 0.33 D and 0.01 ± 0.37 D, while the mean changes in AL, CR and lens power (LP) were 0.27 ± 0.10 mm, 0.00 ± 0.04 mm and − 0.93 ± 0.49 D. The change in the SER was linearly correlated with the baseline SER (coefficient = −0.147, p < 0.001). When the baseline SER was at 1.05 D (95% CI = 0.21 to 2.16), the change in SER was 0 D. The baseline SER was also linearly associated with the change in LP (coefficient = 0.104, p = 0.013), but not with the change in AL (p = 0.957) or with the change in CR (p = 0.263). Conclusion: In eyes with a baseline SER less than +1.00 D, LP loss was higher compared to axial elongation, leading to hyperopic shifts in refraction, whereas for those with baseline SER over this range, loss of LP compared to axial elongation was reduced, leading to myopic shifts.     Spatio-Temporal Dynamic Analysis of Sustainable Development in China Based on the Footprint Family

    The existing index systems on sustainable evaluation are mostly based on a multi index comprehensive evaluation method. The main disadvantage of this approach is that the selection and assignment of evaluation indexes are greatly influenced by subjective factors, which can result in poor comparability of results. By contrast, the Footprint Family (including ecological footprint, carbon footprint, and water footprint) is not affected by subjective factors. The Footprint Family also covers the basic tenets of sustainable development. This paper proposes use of a sustainable development evaluation index system based on the principle of the Footprint Family, and including the ecological pressure index (EPI), the ecological occupancy index (EOI), the ecological economic coordination index (EECI), the GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emission index (CEI), the water resources stress index (WSI), and the sustainable development index (SDI). Furthermore, a standard for grading the evaluated results based on global benchmarks is formulated. The results of an empirical study in China were the following. The development situation deteriorated from 1990 to 2015. The results showed that the SDI decreased from a medium level (grade 5) to a lower-medium level (grade 4). The results of this empirical study also showed that the method of evaluation can avoid the influence of subjective factors and can be used in the evaluation of sustainable development for various temporal and spatial conditions

    Corneal Thickness Profile and Associations in Chinese Children Aged 7 to 15 Years Old.

    Corneal thickness (CT) maps of the central (2-mm diameter), para-central (2 to 5-mm diameter), peripheral (5 to 6-mm diameter), and minimum (5-mm diameter) cornea were measured in normal Chinese school children aged 7 to 15 years old using Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography. Multiple regression analyses were performed to explore the effect of associated factors [age, gender, refraction, axial length and corneal curvature radius (CCR)] on CT and the relationship between central corneal thickness (CCT) and intraocular pressure (IOP). A total of 1228 eyes from 614 children were analyzed. The average CCT was 532.96 ± 28.33 μm for right eyes and 532.70 ±28.45 μm for left eyes. With a 10 μm increase in CCT, the IOP was elevated by 0.37 mm Hg, as measured by noncontact tonometry. The CT increased gradually from the center to the periphery. The superior and superior nasal regions had the thickest CTs, while the thinnest points were primarily located in the inferior temporal cornea. The CCT was associated with CCR (p = 0.008) but not with gender (p = 0.075), age (p = 0.286), axial length (p = 0.405), or refraction (p = 0.985).     Bronchial artery aneurysm (BAA) is a rare and fatal condition that requires immediate treatment. However, conventional surgical and transcatheter arterial embolization treatments are less effective. In the present case, a 76-year-old hypertensive woman was admitted with dizziness and diagnosed with an unruptured bronchial artery aneurysm, which was treated by transcatheter arterial embolization and aortic stent-graft. The patient's clinical status was stable during the 4-year follow-up. Simultaneously, we reviewed 79 research papers, analyzing past BAA cases for their etiology, symptoms, and treatment outcomes. We found that catheter arterial embolization and aortic stent-graft implantation, especially for BAA of short-necked and arterial tortuosity, demonstrate superior efficacy compared to other methods. Therefore, we consider this approach to be the preferred choice in clinical BAA treatment.</p
