Unconventional electronic Raman spectra of borocarbide superconductors
Borocarbide superconductors, which are thought to be conventional BCS-type
superconductors, are not so conventional in several electronic Raman
properties. Anisotropic gap-like features and finite scattering strength below
the gap were observed for the NiBC ( = Lu, Y) systems in our
previous study. The effects of Co-doping on the 2 gap-like features and
the finite scattering strength below and above the gap are studied in = Lu
(B = B) system. In superconducting states, Co-doping strongly suppresses
the 2 peak in both B and B symmetries. Raman
cross-section calculation which includes inelastic scattering shows a
relatively good fit to the features above the 2 peak, while it does not
fully account for the features below the peak.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figur
Raman-Active Resonance Modes, Overtones, and Anharmonicity in NaCl:Cu\u3csup\u3e+\u3c/sup\u3e
The existence of an impurity-activated Eg resonance mode in NaCl:Cu+ has been suggested by several previous experiments. Raman data presented here reveal this resonance directly and also reveal the three components of the first overtone of the 23.5-cm-1 infrared resonance mode. The frequencies of the Eg resonance and the Eg component of the overtone are shifted as a result of a strong anharmonic coupling. Their line shapes and strengths are considerably altered by an interference between the Raman amplitudes. A reasonable fit to the data has been obtained using a simple theory
Evolution of Magnetic and Superconducting Fluctuations with Doping of High-Tc Superconductors (An electronic Raman scattering study)
For YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+\delta} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 superconductors, electronic
Raman scattering from high- and low-energy excitations has been studied in
relation to the hole doping level, temperature, and energy of the incident
photons. For underdoped superconductors, it is concluded that short range
antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations persist with hole doping and doped single
holes are incoherent in the AF environment. Above the superconducting (SC)
transition temperature T_c the system exhibits a sharp Raman resonance of B_1g
symmetry and about 75 meV energy and a pseudogap for electron-hole excitations
below 75 meV, a manifestation of a partially coherent state forming from doped
incoherent quasi-particles. The occupancy of the coherent state increases with
cooling until phase ordering at T_c produces a global SC state.Comment: 5 pages, 4 EPS figures; SNS'97 Proceedings to appear in J. Phys.

A rare presentation of the Klinefelter's syndrome
A 16 years old boy with Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) was not suspected of having Klinefelter's syndrome until he complained of painful gynecomastia. He was under haemodialysis for 2 years. At first, he was in an approximately full pubertal development (P5, G5), but he had a small and a firm testis (length 2.2cm) and some degree of facial male pattern hair. He also had a decreased upper to lower body segment ratio and despite having chronic renal failure, he was taller than his parents and siblings. His laboratory tests showed high levels of FSH and normal levels of LH and testosterone. With regards to all these findings, we suspected that there might be an occult Klinefelter's syndrome. So, we made his karyotype that showed a 47XXY pattern. Because there are only a few number of cases that have occult Klinefelter's syndrome in the basis of chronic renal failure, we decided to report this case
Brillouin-light-scattering study of long-wavelength spin waves in a single-crystal 300- gadolinium film
The temperature dependence of the energy of ferromagnetic spin waves in an epitaxially grown 300- [0001] Gd film is shown to depend on the bulk values of the c-axis magnetic-stiffness constant Dc, defined by (q)=tsumiDiqi2, where qa1, and the axial-anisotropy constant P2, defined by scrHaniso =P2 (Sz)2+.... Two bulk spin waves and one Damon-Eshbach surface magnetostatic wave were probed with Brillouin light scattering. The bulk spin waves were found to be sensitive to the exchange interaction. In contrast, the Damon-Eshbach surface magnetostatic wave, although insensitive to the exchange interaction, is influenced noticeably by the axial magnetic anisotropy P2(T) present in Gd. Ignoring surface anisotropy, we extracted values of Dc(T) and P2(T) from the Brillouin data and from the magnetization of the Gd film determined by a superconducting-quantum-interference-device magnetometer. Within the experimental errors, these values are reasonably consistent with the bulk values from the literature
Brillouin-light-scattering study of long-wavelength acoustic phonons in single-crystal dysprosium films
We have employed Brillouin scattering to investigate elastic-wave velocities as a function of temperature in Dy thin films and in bulk Dy. The single-crystal films were synthesized by molecular-beam epitaxy to ensure high crystalline and interfacial quality. Surface (Rayleigh) and guided-wave (Lamb) modes were probed by the Brillouin technique through the surface ripple-coupling mechanism. Results taken near room temperature in the paramagnetic phase agree very well with a layered-elastic model in which the materials of the samples are represented by elastic behavior using bulk single-crystal elastic data from the literature. At lower temperatures anomalies were found for samples with the thinner Dy layers: Measured wave velocities differed by up to 2% from the model predictions, and the ratio of Lamb-to-Rayleigh intensities was twice the predicted value. The anomalies coincide with the ferromagnetic transitions of the films, and they are believed to originate from coupling between the phonons and the magnetic system in the near-surface region probed by the Brillouin scattering
Conductivity sum rule, implication for in-plane dynamics and c-axis response
Recently observed -axis optical sum rule violations indicate non-Fermi
liquid in-plane behavior. For coherent -axis coupling, the observed flat,
nearly frequency independent -axis conductivity implies
a large in-plane scattering rate around and therefore any
pseudogap that might form at low frequency in the normal state will be smeared.
On the other hand incoherent -axis coupling places no restriction on the
value of and gives a more consistent picture of the observed sum rule
violation which, we find in some cases, can be less than half.Comment: 3 figures. To appear in PR
Mandelbrot set in coupled logistic maps and in an electronic experiment
We suggest an approach to constructing physical systems with dynamical
characteristics of the complex analytic iterative maps. The idea follows from a
simple notion that the complex quadratic map by a variable change may be
transformed into a set of two identical real one-dimensional quadratic maps
with a particular coupling. Hence, dynamical behavior of similar nature may
occur in coupled dissipative nonlinear systems, which relate to the Feigenbaum
universality class. To substantiate the feasibility of this concept, we
consider an electronic system, which exhibits dynamical phenomena intrinsic to
complex analytic maps. Experimental results are presented, providing the
Mandelbrot set in the parameter plane of this physical system.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Successful Yukawa structures in Warped Extra Dimensions
For a RS model, with SM fields in the bulk and the Higgs boson on the
TeV-brane, we suggest two specific structures for the Yukawa couplings, one
based on a permutation symmetry and the other on the Universal Strength of
Yukawa couplings hypothesis (USY). In USY, all Yukawa couplings have equal
strength and the difference in the Yukawa structure lies in some complex phase.
In both scenarios, all Yukawa couplings are of the same order of magnitude.
Thus, the main features of the fermion hierarchies are explained through the RS
geometrical mechanism, and not because some Yukawa coupling is extremely small.
We find that the RS model is particularly appropriate to incorporate the
suggested Yukawa configurations. Indeed, the RS geometrical mechanism of
fermion locations along the extra dimension, combined with the two Yukawa
scenarios, reproduces all the present experimental data on fermion masses and
mixing angles. It is quite remarkable that in the USY case, only two complex
phases of definite value +-Pi/2 are sufficient to generate the known neutrino
mass differences, while at same time, permitting large leptonic mixing in
agreement with experiment.Comment: 11 page
Electronic Raman scattering and photoluminescence from LaSrMnO exhibiting giant magnetoresistance
Raman and Photoluminescence (PL) experiments on correlated metallic
LaSrMnO have been carried out using different excitation
wavelengths as a function of temperature from 15 K to 300 K. Our data suggest a
Raman mode centered at 1800 cm and a PL band at 2.2 eV. The intensities
of the two peaks decrease with increasing temperature. The Raman mode can be
attributed to a plasmon excitation whose frequency and linewidths are
consistent with the measured resistivities. The PL involves intersite
electronic transitions of the manganese ions.Comment: 10 pages + 4 eps figures, Revtex 3.0, figures available on reques
