    Model of a fluid at small and large length scales and the hydrophobic effect

    We present a statistical field theory to describe large length scale effects induced by solutes in a cold and otherwise placid liquid. The theory divides space into a cubic grid of cells. The side length of each cell is of the order of the bulk correlation length of the bulk liquid. Large length scale states of the cells are specified with an Ising variable. Finer length scale effects are described with a Gaussian field, with mean and variance affected by both the large length scale field and by the constraints imposed by solutes. In the absence of solutes and corresponding constraints, integration over the Gaussian field yields an effective lattice gas Hamiltonian for the large length scale field. In the presence of solutes, the integration adds additional terms to this Hamiltonian. We identify these terms analytically. They can provoke large length scale effects, such as the formation of interfaces and depletion layers. We apply our theory to compute the reversible work to form a bubble in liquid water, as a function of the bubble radius. Comparison with molecular simulation results for the same function indicates that the theory is reasonably accurate. Importantly, simulating the large length scale field involves binary arithmetic only. It thus provides a computationally convenient scheme to incorporate explicit solvent dynamics and structure in simulation studies of large molecular assemblies

    Rare KK Decays

    The rare decays of the KK meson have had a long tradition as a laboratory for testing the symmetry properties of the weak interactions, and the manner in which these symmetries are broken by higher order effects. Present--day interest is focussed on decays that are suppressed by CPCP--symmetry or GIM symmetry. Such decays, in the standard theory, are sensitive to effects of the virtual top quark, and could also reveal new interactions transcending the standard model.     Validity of the Patient Experiences and Satisfaction with Medications (PESaM) Questionnaire

    Background: This study assessed the validity and reliability of the generic module of the recently developed Patient Experiences and Satisfaction with Medications (PESaM) questionnaire in a sample of patients in the Netherlands. Methods: The generic module of the PESaM questionnaire consists of 18 items related to the domains effectiveness, side effects and ease of use of medications. It assesses patients’ experiences regarding the impact of the medication on daily life, health and satisfaction. In 2017, the PESaM questionnaire was sent out to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients using pirfenidone or nintedanib, atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome patients receiving eculizumab and patients using tacrolimus after kidney transplantation. Mean scores for each domain were calculated applying a scoring algorithm. Construct validity and reliability were assessed using recommended methods. Results: 188 participants completed the generic module, of whom 48% used pirfenidone, 36% nintedanib, 11% tacrolimus and 5% eculizumab. The generic module has good structural properties. Internal consistency values of the domains were satisfactory (i.e. Cronbach’s coefficient alpha above 0.7). Confirmatory factor analysis provided further evidence for construct validity, with good convergent and discriminant validity. The PESaM questionnaire also showed different scores for patients using different medications, in line with expectations, and was therefore able to differentiate between patient groups. Test–retest reliability of the items and domains were rated as moderate to fair (i.e. intraclass coefficients ranged between 0.18 and 0.76). Conclusions: The PESaM questionnaire is a unique patient-reported outcome measure evaluating patient experiences and satisfaction with medications. It has been developed in conjunction with patients, ensuring coverage of domains and issues relevant from the patient’s perspective. This study has shown promising validity of the generic module of the PESaM questionnaire. Further research is recommended to assess reliability in greater detail as well as the responsiveness of the measure. Trial registration: The study

    Biomass offsets little or none of permafrost carbon release from soils, streams, and wildfire: an expert assessment

    As the permafrost region warms, its large organic carbon pool will be increasingly vulnerable to decomposition, combustion, and hydrologic export. Models predict that some portion of this release will be offset by increased production of Arctic and boreal biomass; however, the lack of robust estimates of net carbon balance increases the risk of further overshooting international emissions targets. Precise empirical or model-based assessments of the critical factors driving carbon balance are unlikely in the near future, so to address this gap, we present estimates from 98 permafrost-region experts of the response of biomass, wildfire, and hydrologic carbon flux to climate change. Results suggest that contrary to model projections, total permafrost-region biomass could decrease due to water stress and disturbance, factors that are not adequately incorporated in current models. Assessments indicate that end-of-the-century organic carbon release from Arctic rivers and collapsing coastlines could increase by 75% while carbon loss via burning could increase four-fold. Experts identified water balance, shifts in vegetation community, and permafrost degradation as the key sources of uncertainty in predicting future system response. In combination with previous findings, results suggest the permafrost region will become a carbon source to the atmosphere by 2100 regardless of warming scenario but that 65%–85% of permafrost carbon release can still be avoided if human emissions are actively reduced

    Em lavouras de feijão, principalmente em cultivos com alta tecnologia, não tem sido dada a devida atenção ao fornecimento adequado de enxofre (S), utilizando doses subestimadas ou não aplicando o elemento via adubação, o que pode estar sendo um fator limitante ao incremento de produtividade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da aplicação de S em cobertura na nutrição, nos componentes da produção e na produtividade de grãos do feijoeiro, em sistema de plantio direto (SPD). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por cinco doses de S (0, 20, 40, 60 e 80 kg ha-1) aplicados em cobertura no estádio V4, tendo como fonte o sulfato de amônio. Aplicação de S em cobertura aumentou o teor do elemento nas folhas, a produção de matéria seca da parte aérea, o número vagens por planta e a produtividade de grãos do feijoeiro em SPD. Em lavouras com alto nível tecnológico, a produtividade de grãos de feijão pode estar sendo limitado pela utilização de doses insuficientes de enxofre.<br>Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) growers have not given attention to a correct sulfur fertilization. Thus, they do not use sulfur fertilization or use low levels in sowing or side dressing. This can be a limiting to increase grain yield. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of levels of side dressing sulfur fertilization on common bean plant nutrition, yield components and grain yield, in no-tillage system. A randomized block design, with five replications was employed. The treatments were five S doses (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 kg ha-1) applied on the V4 stage (third true-leaf). Side dressing sulfur fertilization increased leaf S content, dry matter yield, number of pods per plant and grain yield of common bean in no-tillage system. The increase of grain yield can be limited by low levels of sulfur fertilization in common bean crops with high-input technology
