This monograph has allowed us to present a psychoeducational view of the effects
of the COVID-19 pandemic. We confirm here that research in education contributes its
own evidence and specific models for identifying this problem
Nonadditive entropy for random quantum spin-S chains
We investigate the scaling of Tsallis entropy in disordered quantum spin-S
chains. We show that an extensive scaling occurs for specific values of the
entropic index. Those values depend only on the magnitude S of the spins, being

Prognostic DNA Methylation Biomarkers in High-risk Non–muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer:A Systematic Review to Identify Loci for Prospective Validation
Context: High-risk non–muscle-invasive bladder cancer (HR-NMIBC) represents over 30% of all incident urothelial bladder cancers (BCs); patients are at risk of progression, and 20–30% will die from BC within 5 yr. Current guidelines recommend induction and maintenance of intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) or upfront radical cystectomy for highest-risk disease, treatments with markedly different morbidity, mortality, and patient burden. There are no validated biomarkers to facilitate such treatment decisions. Alterations in DNA methylation are commonplace in BC; hence, measurable changes in DNA methylation represent an opportunity for the discovery of such biomarkers.Objective: To systematically assess the evidence regarding DNA methylation markers as prognosticators for HR-NMIBC.Evidence acquisition: Standard systematic review methods were employed with searches undertaken in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PubMed up to January 2019. Studies that included patients with HR-NMIBC and investigated the utility of DNA methylation biomarkers as prognostic tools were included.Evidence synthesis: Of 63 prognostic biomarker studies identified, 21 met the protocol-driven inclusion criteria and were directly relevant to HR-NMIBC patient outcomes: tumour recurrence (TR), tumour progression (TP), disease-specific survival (DSS), and overall survival (OS). These studies described 140 methylation markers; of these, the most promising were cadherin-13 (CDH13; hazard ratios [HRs]: 5.1 for TR, 6.6 for TP, 3.8–8.0 for OS), protocadherins (PCDHs; HRs: 4.7 for TR, 2.5 for TP, 3.0–4.8 for OS), Runt domain transcription factor 3 (RUNX3; HR: 5.1 for TP), Homeobox 9 (HOXA9; HR: 1.9 for TR), Islet-1 (ISL1; HRs: 1.7 for TR, 3.3 for TP), and PAX6 (HR: 2.2 for TR).Conclusions: This systematic review identifies a number of potentially useful prognostic methylation markers for HR-NMIBC. These loci (CDH13, PCDHs, RUNX3, HOXA9, ISL1, and PAX6) should be validated in prospective studies in order to translate benefit to patients.Patient summary: Early bladder cancer represents a more complex spectrum of disease than can be assessed by conventional methods Emerging studies on molecular markers will improve our understanding of this disease, and may enable more precise and personalised treatment.</p

Ricci-flat deformation of orbifolds and localized tachyonic modes
We study Ricci-flat deformations of orbifolds in type II theory. We obtain a
simple formula for mass corrections to the twisted modes due to the
deformations, and apply it to originally tachyonic and massless states in
several examples. In the case of supersymmetric orbifolds, we find that
tachyonic states appear when the deformation breaks all the supersymmetries. We
also study nonsupersymmetric orbifolds C^2/Z_{2N(2N+1)}, which is T-dual to N
type 0 NS5-branes. For N>=2, we compute mass corrections for states, which have
string scale tachyonic masses. We find that the corrected masses coincide to
ones obtained by solving the wave equation for the tachyon field in the smeared
type 0 NS5-brane background geometry. For N=1, we show that the unstable mode
representing the bubble creation is the unique tachyonic mode.Comment: 20 pages, minor collection
The Narcotic Bowel Syndrome: Clinical Features, Pathophysiology, and Management
Narcotic bowel syndrome (NBS) is a subset of opioid bowel dysfunction that is characterized by chronic or frequently recurring abdominal pain that worsens with continued or escalating dosages of narcotics. This syndrome is under recognized and may be becoming more prevalent. This may be due in the United States to increases in using narcotics for chronic non-malignant painful disorders, and the development of maladaptive therapeutic interactions around its use. NBS can occur in patients with no prior gastrointestinal disorder who receive high dosages of narcotics after surgery or acute painful problems, among patients with functional GI disorders or other chronic gastrointestinal diseases who are managed by physicians unaware of the hyperalgesic effects of chronic opioids. The evidence for the enhanced pain perception is based on: a) activation of excitatory anti-analgesic pathways within a bimodal opioid regulation system, b) descending facilitation of pain at the Rostral Ventral Medulla and pain facilitation via dynorphin and CCK activation, and c) glial cell activation that produces morphine tolerance and enhances opioid induced pain. Treatment involves early recognition of the syndrome, an effective physician patient relationship, graded withdrawal of the narcotic according to a specified withdrawal program and the institution of medications to reduce withdrawal effects
Dualities, Twists, and Gauge Theories with Non-Constant Non-Commutativity
We study the world volume theory of D3-branes wrapping the Melvin universe
supported by background NSNS B-field. In the appropriate decoupling limit, the
open string dynamics is that of non-commutative guage field theory with
non-constant non-commutativity. We identify this model as a simple Melvin twist
of flat D3 branes. Along similar lines, one recognizes the model of Hashimoto
and Sethi as being the Melvin null twist, and the model of Dolan and Nappi as
being the null Melvin twist, of the flat D3-brane. This construction therefore
offers a unified perspective on most of the known explicit constructions of
non-commutative gauge theories as a decoupled theory of D-branes in a B-field
background. We also describe the world volume theory on the D3-brane in Melvin

Limits on the gravity wave contribution to microwave anisotropies
We present limits on the fraction of large angle microwave anisotropies which
could come from tensor perturbations. We use the COBE results as well as
smaller scale CMB observations, measurements of galaxy correlations, abundances
of galaxy clusters, and Lyman alpha absorption cloud statistics. Our aim is to
provide conservative limits on the tensor-to-scalar ratio for standard
inflationary models. For power-law inflation, for example, we find T/S<0.52 at
95% confidence, with a similar constraint for phi^p potentials. However, for
models with tensor amplitude unrelated to the scalar spectral index it is still

Brane Cosmology in the Background of D-Brane with NS B Field
We study the cosmological evolution of the four-dimensional universe on the
probe D3-brane in geodesic motion in the curved background of the source
Dp-brane with non-zero NS B field. The Friedman equations describing the
expansion of the brane universe are obtained and analyzed for various limits.
