    AbstractSulfate reducing bacteria of the Desulfovibrio genus are considered anaerobes, in spite of the fact that they are frequently isolated close to oxic habitats. However, until now, growth in the presence of high concentrations of oxygen was not reported for members of this genus. This work shows for the first time that the sulfate reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ATCC 27774 is able to grow in the presence of nearly atmospheric oxygen levels. In addition, the activity and expression profile of several key enzymes was analyzed under different oxygen concentrations

    Spin polarization in a two-dimensional electron gas

    We evaluate the charge and longitudinal spin response functions of a two-dimensional electron gas with e2/re^2/r interactions in an arbitrary state of spin polarization, using a structurally self-consistent approach to treat exchange and correlations. From the results we assess the nature of the magnetic order in the electronic ground state in zero magnetic field as a function of electron density. We find that states of partial spin polarization are thermodynamically unstable at all values of the coupling strength and that a first-order phase transition occurs with increasing coupling strength from the magnetically disorderd (paramagnetic) phase to the fully spin-polarized (ferromagnetic) phase. This behavior is in qualitative agreement with diffusion Monte Carlo data, although the location of the phase transition is underestimated in our calculations.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figuer

    Measurement of black carbon emissions from multiple engine and source types using laser-induced incandescence : sensitivity to laser fluence

    A new regulatory standard for non-volatile particulate matter (nvPM) mass-based emissions from aircraft engines has been adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. One of the instruments used for the regulatory nvPM mass emissions measurements in aircraft engine certification tests is the Artium Technologies LII 300, which is based on laser-induced incandescence. The LII 300 response has been shown in some cases to vary with the type of black carbon particle measured. Hence it is important to identify a suitable black carbon emission source for instrument calibration. In this study, the relationship between the nvPM emissions produced by different engine sources and the response of the LII 300 instrument utilising the auto-compensating laser-induced incandescence (AC-LII) method was investigated. Six different sources were used, including a turboshaft helicopter engine, a diesel generator, an intermediate pressure test rig of a single-sector combustor, an auxiliary power unit gas turbine engine, a medium-sized diesel engine, and a downsized turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine. Optimum LII 300 laser fluence levels were determined for each source and operating condition evaluated. It was found that an optimised laser fluence can be valid for real-time measurements from a variety of sources, where the mass concentration was independent of laser fluence levels covering the typical operating ranges for the various sources. However, it is important to perform laser fluence sweeps to determine the optimum fluence range as differences were observed in the laser fluence required between sources and fuels. We discuss the measurement merits, variability, and best practices in the real-time quantification of nvPM mass concentration using the LII 300 instrument and compare that with other diagnostic techniques, namely absorption-based methods such as photoacoustic spectroscopy (using a photoacoustic extinctiometer, PAX, and a micro soot sensor, MSS) and thermal-optical analysis (TOA). Particle size distributions were also measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). Overall, the LII 300 provides robust and consistent results when compared with the other diagnostic techniques across multiple engine sources and fuels. The results from this study will inform the development of updated calibration protocols to ensure repeatable and reproducible measurements of nvPM mass emissions from aircraft engines using the LII 300

    Universal procedure to cure future singularities of dark energy models

    A systematic search for different viable models of the dark energy universe, all of which give rise to finite-time, future singularities, is undertaken, with the purpose to try to find a solution to this common problem. After some work, a universal procedure to cure all future singularities is developed and carefully tested with the help of explicit examples corresponding to each one of the four different types of possible singularities, as classified in the literature. The cases of a fluid with an equation of state which depends on some parameter, of modified gravity non-minimally coupled to a matter Lagrangian, of non-local gravity, and of isotropic turbulence in a dark fluid universe theory are investigated in detail

    Why Y chromosome is shorter and women live longer?

    We have used the Penna ageing model to analyze how the differences in evolution of sex chromosomes depend on the strategy of reproduction. In panmictic populations, when females (XX) can freely choose the male partner (XY) for reproduction from the whole population, the Y chromosome accumulates defects and eventually the only information it brings is a male sex determination. As a result of shrinking Y chromosome the males become hemizygous in respect to the X chromosome content and are characterized by higher mortality, observed also in the human populations. If it is assumed in the model that the presence of the male is indispensable at least during the pregnancy of his female partner and he cannot be seduced by another female at least during the one reproduction cycle - the Y chromosome preserves its content, does not shrink and the lifespan of females and males is the same. Thus, Y chromosome shrinks not because of existing in one copy, without the possibility of recombination, but because it stays under weaker selection pressure; in panmictic populations without the necessity of being faithful, a considerable fraction of males is dispensable and they can be eliminated from the population without reducing its reproduction potential.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Screening of cosmological constant for De Sitter Universe in non-local gravity, phantom-divide crossing and finite-time future singularities

    We investigate de Sitter solutions in non-local gravity as well as in non-local gravity with Lagrange constraint multiplier. We examine a condition to avoid a ghost and discuss a screening scenario for a cosmological constant in de Sitter solutions. Furthermore, we explicitly demonstrate that three types of the finite-time future singularities can occur in non-local gravity and explore their properties. In addition, we evaluate the effective equation of state for the universe and show that the late-time accelerating universe may be effectively the quintessence, cosmological constant or phantom-like phases. In particular, it is found that there is a case in which a crossing of the phantom divide from the non-phantom (quintessence) phase to the phantom one can be realized when a finite-time future singularity occurs. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the addition of an R2R^2 term can cure the finite-time future singularities in non-local gravity. It is also suggested that in the framework of non-local gravity, adding an R2R^2 term leads to possible unification of the early-time inflation with the late-time cosmic acceleration.Comment: 42 pages, no figure, version accepted for publication in General Relativity and Gravitatio

    Unifying inflation with dark energy in modified F(R) Horava-Lifshitz gravity

    We study FRW cosmology for a non-linear modified F(R) Horava-Lifshitz gravity which has a viable convenient counterpart. A unified description of early-time inflation and late-time acceleration is possible in this theory, but the cosmological dynamic details are generically different from the ones of the convenient viable F(R) model. Remarkably, for some specific choice of parameters they do coincide. The emergence of finite-time future singularities is investigated in detail. It is shown that these singularities can be cured by adding an extra, higher-derivative term, which turns out to be qualitatively different when compared with the corresponding one of the convenient F(R) theory.Comment: LaTeX 12 pages, typos are correcte
