Stable marriage with general preferences
We propose a generalization of the classical stable marriage problem. In our
model, the preferences on one side of the partition are given in terms of
arbitrary binary relations, which need not be transitive nor acyclic. This
generalization is practically well-motivated, and as we show, encompasses the
well studied hard variant of stable marriage where preferences are allowed to
have ties and to be incomplete. As a result, we prove that deciding the
existence of a stable matching in our model is NP-complete. Complementing this
negative result we present a polynomial-time algorithm for the above decision
problem in a significant class of instances where the preferences are
asymmetric. We also present a linear programming formulation whose feasibility
fully characterizes the existence of stable matchings in this special case.
Finally, we use our model to study a long standing open problem regarding the
existence of cyclic 3D stable matchings. In particular, we prove that the
problem of deciding whether a fixed 2D perfect matching can be extended to a 3D
stable matching is NP-complete, showing this way that a natural attempt to
resolve the existence (or not) of 3D stable matchings is bound to fail.Comment: This is an extended version of a paper to appear at the The 7th

The mental health of university students in the United Kingdom
There are increasing concerns globally about the mental health of students (Kadison,& Digeronimo, 2004). In the UK, the actual incidence of mental disturbance is unknown, although university counselling services report increased referrals (Association of University & College Counselling, 2011). This study assesses the levels of mental illness in undergraduate students to examine whether widening participation in education has resulted in increases as hypothesized by the UK Royal College of Psychiatrists (2003, 2011). Patterns of disturbance across years are compared to identify where problems arise. Students (N = 1197) completed the General Health Questionnaire-28 either on day one at university or midway through the academic year for first, second and third year students. Rates of mental illness in students equalled those of the general population but only 5.1% were currently receiving treatment. Second year students reported the most significant increases in psychiatric symptoms. Factors contributing to the problem are discussed

Myocardial salvage with trolox and ascorbic acid for an acute evolving infarction
Both Trolox (a water-soluble analogue of \u3b1-tocopherol) and ascorbic acid were more effective than superoxide dismutase or catalase in protecting myocyte cell cultures from free radical attack (induced by hypoxanthine and xanthine oxidase). In a canine model of two hours of left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion followed by four hours of reperfusion, Trolox and ascorbic acid reduced the area of infarction within the area at risk. The Trolox group received 500 mL of deoxygenated saline solution containing 2.0 g of Trolox, 3.0 g of ascorbic acid, and 18 mg of EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) infused into the ascending aorta 30 seconds before and four minutes after reperfusion. Saline controls received 500 mL of deoxygenated saline solution containing 18 mg of EDTA. The angioplasty group had unmodified reperfusion by simple release of the occlusion. The area at risk and the area infarcted were estimated with Evans blue and triphgnyl tetrazolium hydiochloride stains, respectively. The ratio of the area infarcted to the area at risk was significantly lower with Trolox (angioplasty, 33.4% \ub1 5.1%; saline, 20.8% \ub1 2.9%; and Trolox, 8.7% \ub1 4.0%; p < 0.01). In summary, the antioxidants Trolox and ascorbic acid effectively reduced myocardial necrosis after ischemia. \ua9 1989.Peer reviewed: YesNRC publication: Ye
Family-based association study of the MTHFR polymorphism C677T in patients with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate from central Europe.
Item does not contain fulltextOBJECTIVE: The 677C-->T allele in the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene has been implicated in the etiology of nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate (CL/P). This study involved a family-based association study of the MTHFR polymorphism. PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: We examined 181 patients with CL/P of central European descent and their parents for this variant. RESULTS: The transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) did not confirm an association between the MTHFR 677C-->T polymorphism and nonsyndromic CL/P as previously suggested (p = .36). When comparing the offspring of mothers with periconceptional use of folate to those without, no statistically significant differences were found (p = .708). CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that the MTHFR 677C-->T polymorphism does not make a major contribution to the occurrence of CL/P among central Europeans
