The impact of secondary ice production on Arctic stratocumulus
In situ measurements of Arctic clouds frequently show that ice crystal number concentrations (ICNCs) are much higher than the number of available ice-nucleating particles (INPs), suggesting that secondary ice production (SIP) may be active. Here we use a Lagrangian parcel model (LPM) and a large-eddy simulation (LES) to investigate the impact of three SIP mechanisms (rime splintering, break-up from iceâice collisions and drop shattering) on a summer Arctic stratocumulus case observed during the Aerosol-Cloud Coupling And Climate Interactions in the Arctic (ACCACIA) campaign. Primary ice alone cannot explain the observed ICNCs, and drop shattering is ineffective in the examined conditions. Only the combination of both rime splintering (RS) and collisional break-up (BR) can explain the observed ICNCs, since both of these mechanisms are weak when activated alone. In contrast to RS, BR is currently not represented in large-scale models; however our results indicate that this may also be a critical ice-multiplication mechanism. In general, low sensitivity of the ICNCs to the assumed INP, to the cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) conditions and also to the choice of BR parameterization is found. Finally, we show that a simplified treatment of SIP, using a LPM constrained by a LES and/or observations, provides a realistic yet computationally efficient way to study SIP effects on clouds. This method can eventually serve as a way to parameterize SIP processes in large-scale models

Charge asymmetry ratio as a probe of quark flavour couplings of resonant particles at the LHC
We show how a precise knowledge of parton distribution functions, in
particular those of the u and d quarks, can be used to constrain a certain
class of New Physics models in which new heavy charged resonances couple to
quarks and leptons. We illustrate the method by considering a left-right
symmetric model with a W' from a SU(2)_R gauge sector produced in
quark-antiquark annihilation and decaying into a charged lepton and a heavy
Majorana neutrino. We discuss a number of quark and lepton mixing scenarios,
and simulate both signals and backgrounds in order to determine the size of the
expected charge asymmetry. We show that various quark-W' mixing scenarios can
indeed be constrained by charge asymmetry measurements at the LHC, particularly
at 14 TeV centre of mass energy.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Same-sign W pair production as a probe of double parton scattering at the LHC
We study the production of same-sign W boson pairs at the LHC in double
parton interactions. Compared with simple factorised double parton
distributions (dPDFs), we show that the recently developed dPDFs, GS09, lead to
non-trivial kinematic correlations between the W bosons. A numerical study of
the prospects for observing this process using same-sign dilepton signatures,
including same-sign WWjj, di-boson and heavy flavour backgrounds, at 14 TeV
centre-of-mass energy is then performed. It is shown that a small excess of
same-sign dilepton events from double parton scattering over a background
dominated by single scattering WZ(gamma*) production could be observed at the
LHC.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. Added references, slight changes in the text
PTF11iqb: cool supergiant mass-loss that bridges the gap between Type IIn and normal supernovae
The supernova (SN) PTF11iqb was initially classified as a Type IIn event caught very early after explosion. It showed narrow WolfâRayet (WR) spectral features on day 2 (as in SN 1998S and SN 2013cu), but the narrow emission weakened quickly and the spectrum morphed to resemble Types II-L and II-P. At late times, H? exhibited a complex, multipeaked profile reminiscent of SN 1998S. In terms of spectroscopic evolution, we find that PTF11iqb was a near twin of SN 1998S, although with somewhat weaker interaction with circumstellar material (CSM) at early times, and stronger interaction at late times. We interpret the spectral changes as caused by early interaction with asymmetric CSM that is quickly (by day 20) enveloped by the expanding SN ejecta photosphere, but then revealed again after the end of the plateau when the photosphere recedes. The light curve can be matched with a simple model for CSM interaction (with a mass-loss rate of roughly 10?4 M? yr?1) added to the light curve of a normal SN II-P. The underlying plateau requires a progenitor with an extended hydrogen envelope like a red supergiant at the moment of explosion, consistent with the slow wind speed (<80?km?s?1) inferred from narrow H? emission. The cool supergiant progenitor is significant because PTF11iqb showed WR features in its early spectrum â meaning that the presence of such WR features does not necessarily indicate a WR-like progenitor. Overall, PTF11iqb bridges SNe IIn with weaker pre-SN mass-loss seen in SNe II-L and II-P, implying a continuum between these types

Strange Meson Enhancement in PbPb Collisions
The NA44 Collaboration has measured yields and differential distributions of
K+, K-, pi+, pi- in transverse kinetic energy and rapidity, around the
center-of-mass rapidity in 158 A GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. A
considerable enhancement of K+ production per pi is observed, as compared to
p+p collisions at this energy. To illustrate the importance of secondary hadron
rescattering as an enhancement mechanism, we compare strangeness production at
the SPS and AGS with predictions of the transport model RQMD.Comment: 11 pages, including 4 figures, LATE
The fully differential single-top-quark cross section in next-to-leading order QCD
We present a new next-to-leading order calculation for fully differential
single-top-quark final states. The calculation is performed using phase space
slicing and dipole subtraction methods. The results of the methods are found to
be in agreement. The dipole subtraction method calculation retains the full
spin dependence of the final state particles. We show a few numerical results
to illustrate the utility and consistency of the resulting computer
implementations.Comment: 37 pages, latex, 2 ps figure
Recognition of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class Ib molecule H2-Q10 by the natural killer cell receptor Ly49C
Murine natural killer (NK) cells are regulated by the interaction of Ly49 receptors with major histocompatibility complex class I molecules (MHC-I). Although the ligands for inhibitory Ly49 were considered to be restricted to classical MHC (MHC-Ia), we have shown that the non-classical MHC molecule (MHC-Ib) H2-M3 was a ligand for the inhibitory Ly49A. Here we establish that another MHC-Ib, H2-Q10, is a bona fide ligand for the inhibitory Ly49C receptor. H2-Q10 bound to Ly49C with a marginally lower affinity (âŒ5 ÎŒm) than that observed between Ly49C and MHC-Ia (H-2Kb/H-2Dd, both âŒ1 ÎŒm), and this recognition could be prevented by cis interactions with H-2K in situ. To understand the molecular details underpinning Ly49·MHC-Ib recognition, we determined the crystal structures of H2-Q10 and Ly49C bound H2-Q10. Unliganded H2-Q10 adopted a classical MHC-I fold and possessed a peptide-binding groove that exhibited features similar to those found in MHC-Ia, explaining the diverse peptide binding repertoire of H2-Q10. Ly49C bound to H2-Q10 underneath the peptide binding platform to a region that encompassed residues from the α1, α2, and α3 domains, as well as the associated ÎČ2-microglobulin subunit. This docking mode was conserved with that previously observed for Ly49C·H-2Kb. Indeed, structure-guided mutation of Ly49C indicated that Ly49C·H2-Q10 and Ly49C·H-2Kb possess similar energetic footprints focused around residues located within the Ly49C ÎČ4-stand and L5 loop, which contact the underside of the peptide-binding platform floor. Our data provide a structural basis for Ly49·MHC-Ib recognition and demonstrate that MHC-Ib represent an extended family of ligands for Ly49 molecules
Measurements of the Production, Decay and Properties of the Top Quark: A Review
With the full Tevatron Run II and early LHC data samples, the opportunity for
furthering our understanding of the properties of the top quark has never been
more promising. Although the current knowledge of the top quark comes largely
from Tevatron measurements, the experiments at the LHC are poised to probe
top-quark production and decay in unprecedented regimes. Although no current
top quark measurements conclusively contradict predictions from the standard
model, the precision of most measurements remains statistically limited.
Additionally, some measurements, most notably the forward-backward asymmetry in
top quark pair production, show tantalizing hints of beyond-the-Standard-Model
dynamics. The top quark sample is growing rapidly at the LHC, with initial
results now public. This review examines the current status of top quark
measurements in the particular light of searching for evidence of new physics,
either through direct searches for beyond the standard model phenomena or
indirectly via precise measurements of standard model top quark properties
