OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare postprandial satiety regulating hormone responses (pancreatic polypeptide (PP) and peptide tyrosine tyrosine (PYY)) and visual analog scale- (VAS) assessed perceived appetite and satiety between liquid high-protein (HP) and high-carbohydrate (HC) meals in obese women during acute (24-h) caloric restriction. DESIGN: Eleven obese premenopausal women completed two conditions in random order in which they consumed 1500 calories as six 250-calorie HP meals or six 250-calorie HC meals over a 12-h period. Blood samples were taken at baseline and every 20 min thereafter and analyzed for PP and PYY concentrations. At these same points, perceived hunger and fullness were assessed with a VAS. The incremental area under the curve (iAUC) was used to compare postprandial responses. RESULTS: THE 12-H PP AND PYY IAUC WERE GREATER (P0.05) DURING THE HP CONDITION (PP: 4727±1306 pg/ml×12 h, PYY: 1373±357 pg/ml×12 h) compared with the HC condition (PP: 2300±528 pg/ml×12 h, PYY: 754±246 pg/ml×12 h). Perceived hunger and fullness were not different between conditions (P>0.05). The greatest changes in PYY and perceived fullness occurred after the morning meals during both conditions. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that in obese women during acute caloric restriction before weight loss, i) liquid HP meals, compared with HC meals, result in greater postprandial PP and PYY concentrations, an effect not associated with differential appetite or satiety responses, and ii) meal-induced changes in PYY and satiety are greatest during the morning period, regardless of dietary macronutrient composition

Phenomenological model of elastic distortions near the spin-Peierls transition in CuGeO3CuGeO_3

A phenomenological model of the Landau type forms the basis for a study of elastic distortions near the spin-Peierls transition TcT_c in CuGeO3CuGeO_3. The atomic displacements proposed by Hirota {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 73}, 736 (1994)] are accounted for by the model which includes linear coupling between CuCu and OO distortions. CuCu displacements are seen to be responsible for anomalies in the elastic properties {\it at} TcT_c, whereas incipient OO distortions give rise to temperature dependence below TcT_c. A discussion of possible critical behavior is also made.Comment: 1 figure available upon reques

Classical and nonclassical symmetries of a generalized Boussinesq equation

We apply the Lie-group formalism and the nonclassical method due to Bluman and Cole to deduce symmetries of the generalized Boussinesq equation, which has the classical Boussinesq equation as an special case. We study the class of functions f(u)f(u) for which this equation admit either the classical or the nonclassical method. The reductions obtained are derived. Some new exact solutions can be derived

High coercivity SmFeAlC thin films fabricated by multilayer sputtering

Multilayer sputtering of SmFe/C(Al) plus appropriate thermal processing has been used to fabricate SmFeC thin films with A1 substitution for Fe. It was found that the SmFeAlC thin films exhibited exceptionally high Coercivities. A coercivity of 28 kOe was realized for the thin film with structure of Ta(l000 Å)/|SmFe(40Å)/ C(Al)(5Å)]x50/Ta(200Å) with subsequent annealing at 650°C

CoPtCr:C nanocomposite films for high density recording

We report results on the magnetic properties of nanocomposite films of the form (Co86Cr14)xPt1-x:C, which were prepared by magnetron sputtering and subsequent annealing. X-ray diffraction shows that these films consist of CoPtCr grains with the face-centered-tetragonal structure embedded in an amorphous C matrix. Magnetic properties such as coercivity (Hc), remanence ratio (S), and coercive squareness (S*) are strongly dependent on the Pt and C composition and annealing temperatures. Compared with previously reported CoPt:C films with a equiatomic Co and Pt ratio, lower exchange coupling and higher S and S* at the same C concentration were obtained. Hc values ranging from 2 to 10 kOe and S close to 1 were achieved for film thicknesses down to 10 nm. These features make CoPtCr:C nanocomposite films very attractive for next-generation high-density recording

Observed photodetachment in parallel electric and magnetic fields

We investigate photodetachment from negative ions in a homogeneous 1.0-T magnetic field and a parallel electric field of approximately 10 V/cm. A theoretical model for detachment in combined fields is presented. Calculations show that a field of 10 V/cm or more should considerably diminish the Landau structure in the detachment cross section. The ions are produced and stored in a Penning ion trap and illuminated by a single-mode dye laser. We present preliminary results for detachment from S- showing qualitative agreement with the model. Future directions of the work are also discussed.Comment: Nine pages, five figures, minor revisions showing final publicatio

Bacterial diversity in the intestine of sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus

    Get PDF
The intestinal bacterial diversity of Stichopus japonicus was investigated using 16S ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) clone library and Polymerase Chain Reaction/Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE). The clone library yielded a total of 188 clones, and these were sequenced and classified into 106 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) with sequence similarity ranging from 88 to 100%. The coverage of the library was 77.4%, with approximately 88.7% of the sequences affiliated to Proteobacteria. Gammaproteobacteria and Vibrio sp. were the predominant groups in the intestine of S. japonicus. Some bacteria such as Legionella sp., Brachybacterium sp., Streptomyces sp., Propionigenium sp. and Psychrobacter sp were first identified in the intestine of sea cucumber

Molecular dynamics simulation of the order-disorder phase transition in solid NaNO2_2

We present molecular dynamics simulations of solid NaNO2_2 using pair potentials with the rigid-ion model. The crystal potential surface is calculated by using an \emph{a priori} method which integrates the \emph{ab initio} calculations with the Gordon-Kim electron gas theory. This approach is carefully examined by using different population analysis methods and comparing the intermolecular interactions resulting from this approach with those from the \emph{ab initio} Hartree-Fock calculations. Our numerics shows that the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in solid NaNO2_2 is triggered by rotation of the nitrite ions around the crystallographical c axis, in agreement with recent X-ray experiments [Gohda \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{63}, 14101 (2000)]. The crystal-field effects on the nitrite ion are also addressed. Remarkable internal charge-transfer effect is found.Comment: RevTeX 4.0, 11 figure
