    Flavon exchange effects in models with abelian flavor symmetry

    In models with abelian flavor symmetry the small mixing angles and mass ratios of quarks and leptons are typically given by powers of small parameters characterizing the spontaneous breaking of flavor symmetry by "flavon" fields. If the scale of the breaking of flavor symmetry is near the weak scale, flavon exchange can lead to interesting flavor-violating and CP violating effects. These are studied. It is found that d_e, mu -> e + gamma, and mu-e conversion on nuclei can be near present limits.     The atmospheric charged kaon/pion ratio using seasonal variation methods

    Observed since the 1950's, the seasonal effect on underground muons is a well studied phenomenon. The interaction height of incident cosmic rays changes as the temperature of the atmosphere changes, which affects the production height of mesons (mostly pions and kaons). The decay of these mesons produces muons that can be detected underground. The production of muons is dominated by pion decay, and previous work did not include the effect of kaons. In this work, the methods of Barrett and MACRO are extended to include the effect of kaons. These efforts give rise to a new method to measure the atmospheric K/π\pi ratio at energies beyond the reach of current fixed target experiments. These methods were applied to data from the MINOS far detector.     Nearly Bi-Maximal Neutrino Mixing, Muon g-2 Anomaly and Lepton-Flavor-Violating Processes

    We interpret the newly observed muon g-2 anomaly in the framework of a leptonic Higgs doublet model with nearly degenerate neutrino masses and nearly bi-maximal neutrino mixing. Useful constraints are obtained on the rates of lepton-flavor-violating rare decays τμγ\tau \to \mu \gamma, μeγ\mu \to e \gamma and τeγ\tau \to e \gamma as well as the μ\mu-ee conversion ratio RμeR_{\mu e}. We find that Γ(μeγ)\Gamma (\mu \to e \gamma), Γ(τeγ)\Gamma (\tau \to e \gamma) and RμeR_{\mu e} depend crucially on possible non-zero but samll values of the neutrino mixing matrix element Ve3V_{e3}, and they are also sensitive to the Dirac-type CP-violating phase. In particular, we show that Γ(τμγ)/mτ5\Gamma (\tau \to \mu \gamma)/m^5_\tau, Γ(μeγ)/mμ5\Gamma (\mu \to e \gamma)/m^5_\mu and Γ(τeγ)/mτ5\Gamma (\tau \to e \gamma)/m^5_\tau are approximately in the ratio 1:2Ve32:2Ve321: 2|V_{e3}|^2: 2|V_{e3}|^2 if Ve3|V_{e3}| is much larger than O(102){\cal O}(10^{-2}), and in the ratio 2(Δmatm2)2:(Δmsun2)2:(Δmsun2)22 (\Delta m^2_{\rm atm})^2: (\Delta m^2_{\rm sun})^2:(\Delta m^2_{\rm sun})^2 if Ve3|V_{e3}| is much lower than O(103){\cal O}(10^{-3}), where Δmatm2\Delta m^2_{\rm atm} and Δmsun2\Delta m^2_{\rm sun} are the corresponding mass-squared differences of atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations.Comment: LaTex 6 pages (2 PS figures).     Search for the Proton Decay Mode proton to neutrino K+ in Soudan 2

    We have searched for the proton decay mode proton to neutrino K+ using the one-kiloton Soudan 2 high resolution calorimeter. Contained events obtained from a 3.56 kiloton-year fiducial exposure through June 1997 are examined for occurrence of a visible K+ track which decays at rest into mu+ nu or pi+ pi0.     Supersymmetry discovery potential of the LHC at s=\sqrt{s}=10 and 14 TeV without and with missing ETE_T

    We examine the supersymmetry (SUSY) reach of the CERN LHC operating at s=10\sqrt{s}=10 and 14 TeV within the framework of the minimal supergravity model. We improve upon previous reach projections by incorporating updated background calculations including a variety of 2n2\to n Standard Model (SM) processes. We show that SUSY discovery is possible even before the detectors are understood well enough to utilize either ETmissE_T^{\rm miss} or electrons in the signal. We evaluate the early SUSY reach of the LHC at s=10\sqrt{s}=10 TeV by examining multi-muon plus 4\ge4 jets and also dijet events with {\it no} missing ETE_T cuts and show that the greatest reach in terms of m1/2m_{1/2} occurs in the dijet channel. The reach in multi-muons is slightly smaller in m1/2m_{1/2}, but extends to higher values of m0m_0. We find that an observable multi-muon signal will first appear in the opposite-sign dimuon channel, but as the integrated luminosity increases the relatively background-free but rate-limited same-sign dimuon, and ultimately the trimuon channel yield the highest reach. We show characteristic distributions in these channels that serve to distinguish the signal from the SM background, and also help to corroborate its SUSY origin. We then evaluate the LHC reach in various no-lepton and multi-lepton plus jets channels {\it including} missing ETE_T cuts for s=10\sqrt{s}=10 and 14 TeV, and plot the reach for integrated luminosities ranging up to 3000 fb1^{-1} at the SLHC. For s=10\sqrt{s}=10 TeV, the LHC reach extends to mgluino=1.9,2.3,2.8m_{gluino}=1.9, 2.3, 2.8 and 2.9 TeV for msquarkmgluinom_{squark}\sim m_{gluino} and integrated luminosities of 10, 100, 1000 and 3000 fb1^{-1}, respectively. For s=14\sqrt{s}=14 TeV, the LHC reach for the same integrated luminosities is to m_{gluino}=2.4,\3.1, 3.7 and 4.0 TeV.Comment: 34 pages, 25 figures.     Detection of filovirus-reactive antibodies in Australian bat species

    Bats have been implicated as the reservoir hosts of filoviruses in Africa, with serological evidence of filoviruses in various bat species identified in other countries. Here, serum samples from 190 bats, comprising 12 different species, collected in Australia were evaluated for filovirus antibodies. An in-house indirect microsphere assay to detect antibodies that cross-react with Ebola virus (Zaire ebolavirus; EBOV) nucleoprotein (NP) followed by an immunofluorescence assay (IFA) were used to confirm immunoreactivity to EBOV and Reston virus (Reston ebolavirus; RESTV). We found 27 of 102 Yinpterochiroptera and 19 of 88 Yangochiroptera samples were positive to EBOV NP in the microsphere assay. Further testing of these NP positive samples by IFA revealed nine bat sera that showed binding to ebolavirus-infected cells. This is the first report of filovirus-reactive antibodies detected in Australian bat species and suggests that novel filoviruses may be circulating in Australian bats

    QCD radiation in the production of heavy colored particles at the LHC

    We present a study of effects of QCD radiation in the production of heavy colored states, employing inclusive multi-jet samples obtained by matching matrix elements and parton showers. We discuss several examples showing that matched samples are in general not only more accurate than a parton shower alone, but also often indispensable to make reliable predictions of beyond the Standard Model signals.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure

    Sparticle Spectra and LHC Signatures for Large Volume String Compactifications

    We study the supersymmetric particle spectra and LHC collider observables for the large-volume string models with a fundamental scale of 10^{11} GeV that arise in moduli-fixed string compactifications with branes and fluxes. The presence of magnetic fluxes on the brane world volume, required for chirality, perturb the soft terms away from those previously computed in the dilute-flux limit. We use the difference in high-scale gauge couplings to estimate the magnitude of this perturbation and study the potential effects of the magnetic fluxes by generating many random spectra with the soft terms perturbed around the dilute flux limit. Even with a 40% variation in the high-scale soft terms the low-energy spectra take a clear and predictive form. The resulting spectra are broadly similar to those arising on the SPS1a slope, but more degenerate. In their minimal version the models predict the ratios of gaugino masses to be M_1 : M_2 : M_3=(1.5 - 2) : 2 : 6, different to both mSUGRA and mirage mediation. Among the scalars, the squarks tend to be lighter and the sleptons heavier than for comparable mSUGRA models. We generate 10 fb^{-1} of sample LHC data for the random spectra in order to study the range of collider phenomenology that can occur. We perform a detailed mass reconstruction on one example large-volume string model spectrum. 100 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity is sufficient to discriminate the model from mSUGRA and aspects of the sparticle spectrum can be accurately reconstructed.Comment: 42 pages, 21 figures.     Lepton Flavor Violation in the SUSY-GUT Models with Lopsided Mass Matrix

    The tiny neutrino masses measured in the neutrino oscillation experiments can be naturally explained by the supersymmetric see-saw mechanism. If the supersymmetry breaking is mediated by gravity, the see-saw models may predict observable lepton flavor violating effects. In this work, we investigate the lepton flavor violating process μeγ\mu\to e\gamma in the kind of neutrino mass models based on the idea of the ``lopsided'' form of the charged lepton mass matrix. The constraints set by the muon anomalous magnetic moment are taken into account. We find the present models generally predict a much larger branching ratio of μeγ\mu\to e\gamma than the experimental limit. Conversely, this process may give strong constraint on the lepton flavor structure. Following this constraint we then find a new kind of the charged lepton mass matrix. The feature of the structure is that both the elements between the 2-3 and 1-3 generations are ``lopsided''. This structure produces a very small 1-3 mixing and a large 1-2 mixing in the charged lepton sector, which naturally leads to small Br(μeγ)Br(\mu\to e\gamma) and the LMA solution for the solar neutrino problem.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figure

    Congenital macrothrombocytopenia with focal myelofibrosis due to mutations in human G6b-B is rescued in humanized mice.

    Unlike primary myelofibrosis (PMF) in adults, myelofibrosis in children is rare. Congenital (inherited) forms of myelofibrosis (cMF) have been described, but the underlying genetic mechanisms remain elusive. Here we describe 4 families with autosomal recessive inherited macrothrombocytopenia with focal myelofibrosis due to germ line loss-of-function mutations in the megakaryocyte-specific immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif (ITIM)-containing receptor G6b-B (G6b, C6orf25, or MPIG6B). Patients presented with a mild-to-moderate bleeding diathesis, macrothrombocytopenia, anemia, leukocytosis and atypical megakaryocytes associated with a distinctive, focal, perimegakaryocytic pattern of bone marrow fibrosis. In addition to identifying the responsible gene, the description of G6b-B as the mutated protein potentially implicates aberrant G6b-B megakaryocytic signaling and activation in the pathogenesis of myelofibrosis. Targeted insertion of human G6b in mice rescued the knockout phenotype and a copy number effect of human G6b-B expression was observed. Homozygous knockin mice expressed 25% of human G6b-B and exhibited a marginal reduction in platelet count and mild alterations in platelet function; these phenotypes were more severe in heterozygous mice that expressed only 12% of human G6b-B. This study establishes G6b-B as a critical regulator of platelet homeostasis in humans and mice. In addition, the humanized G6b mouse will provide an invaluable tool for further investigating the physiological functions of human G6b-B as well as testing the efficacy of drugs targeting this receptor
