Intensity correlations and entanglement by frequency doubling in a dual ported resonator
We show that non-classical intensity correlations and quadrature entanglement
can be generated by frequency doubling in a resonator with two output ports. We
predict twin-beam intensity correlations 6 dB below the coherent state limit,
and that the product of the inference variances of the quadrature fluctuations
gives an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation coefficient of V_EPR = 0.6 <
1. Comparison with an entanglement source based on combining two frequency
doublers with a beam splitter shows that the dual ported resonator provides
stronger entanglement at lower levels of individual beam squeezing.
Calculations are performed using a self-consistent propagation method that does
not invoke a mean field approximation. Results are given for physically
realistic parameters that account for the Gaussian shape of the intracavity

Multi-photon entanglement from distant single photon sources on demand
We describe a scheme that allows for the generation of any desired N-photon
state on demand. Under ideal conditions, this requires only N single photon
sources, laser pulses and linear optics elements. First, the sources should be
initialised with the help of single-qubit rotations and repeat-until-success
two-qubit quantum gates [Lim et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 030305 (2005)].
Afterwards, the state of the sources can be mapped onto the state of N newly

3D freeform surfaces from planar sketches using neural networks
A novel intelligent approach into 3D freeform surface reconstruction from planar sketches is proposed. A multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network is employed to induce 3D freeform surfaces from planar freehand curves. Planar curves were used to represent the boundaries of a freeform surface patch. The curves were varied iteratively and sampled to produce training data to train and test the neural network. The obtained results demonstrate that the network successfully learned the inverse-projection map and correctly inferred the respective surfaces from fresh curves
A scheme for symmetrization verification
We propose a scheme for symmetrization verification in two-particle systems,
based on one-particle detection and state determination. In contrast to
previous proposals, it does not follow a Hong-Ou-Mandel-type approach.
Moreover, the technique can be used to generate superposition states of single
particles
Excessive growth hormone expression in male GH transgenic mice adversely alters bone architecture and mechanical strength
Patients with acromegaly have a higher prevalence of vertebral fractures despite normal bone mineral density (BMD), suggesting that GH overexpression has adverse effects on skeletal architecture and strength. We used giant bovine GH (bGH) transgenic mice to analyze the effects of high serum GH levels on BMD, architecture, and mechanical strength. Five-month-old hemizygous male bGH mice were compared with age- and sex-matched nontransgenic littermates controls (NT; n=16/group). Bone architecture and BMD were analyzed in tibia and lumbar vertebrae using microcomputed tomography. Femora were tested to failure using three-point bending and bone cellular activity determined by bone histomorphometry. bGH transgenic mice displayed significant increases in body weight and bone lengths. bGH tibia showed decreases in trabecular bone volume fraction, thickness, and number compared with NT ones, whereas trabecular pattern factor and structure model index were significantly increased, indicating deterioration in bone structure. Although cortical tissue perimeter was increased in transgenic mice, cortical thickness was reduced. bGH mice showed similar trabecular BMD but reduced trabecular thickness in lumbar vertebra relative to controls. Cortical BMD and thickness were significantly reduced in bGH lumbar vertebra. Mechanical testing of femora confirmed that bGH femora have decreased intrinsic mechanical properties compared with NT ones. Bone turnover is increased in favor of bone resorption in bGH tibia and vertebra compared with controls, and serum PTH levels is also enhanced in bGH mice. These data collectively suggest that high serum GH levels negatively affect bone architecture and quality at multiple skeletal sites
Cell division: a source of active stress in cellular monolayers
We introduce the notion of cell division-induced activity and show that the
cell division generates extensile forces and drives dynamical patterns in cell
assemblies. Extending the hydrodynamic models of lyotropic active nematics we
describe turbulent-like velocity fields that are generated by the cell division
in a confluent monolayer of cells. We show that the experimentally measured
flow field of dividing Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells is reproduced by
our modeling approach. Division-induced activity acts together with intrinsic
activity of the cells in extensile and contractile cell assemblies to change
the flow and director patterns and the density of topological defects. Finally
we model the evolution of the boundary of a cellular colony and compare the
fingering instabilities induced by cell division to experimental observations

Reflectionless Potentials and PT Symmetry
Large families of Hamiltonians that are non-Hermitian in the conventional
sense have been found to have all eigenvalues real, a fact attributed to an
unbroken PT symmetry. The corresponding quantum theories possess an
unconventional scalar product. The eigenvalues are determined by differential
equations with boundary conditions imposed in wedges in the complex plane. For
a special class of such systems, it is possible to impose the PT-symmetric
boundary conditions on the real axis, which lies on the edges of the wedges.
The PT-symmetric spectrum can then be obtained by imposing the more transparent
