A Multiwavelength Investigation of Unidentified EGRET Sources
Statistical studies indicate that the 271 point sources of high-energy gamma
rays belong to two groups: a Galactic population and an isotropic extragalactic
population. Many unidentified extragalactic sources are certainly blazars, and
it is the intention of this work to uncover gamma-ray blazars missed by
previous attempts. Until recently, searches for blazar counterparts to
unidentified EGRET sources have focused on finding AGN that have 5-GHz radio
flux densities S_5 near or above 1 Jy. However, the recent blazar
identification of 3EG J2006-2321 (S_5 = 260 mJy) and other work suggest that
careful studies of weaker flat-spectrum sources may be fruitful. In this
spirit, error circles of 4 high-latitude unidentified EGRET sources have been
searched for 5-GHz sources. The gamma-ray sources are 3EG J1133+0033, 3EG
J1212+2304, 3EG J1222+2315, and 3EG J1227+4302. Within the error contours of
each of the four sources are found 6 radio candidates; by observing the
positions of the radio sources with the 0.81-m Tenagra II telescope it is
determined that 14 of these 24 radio sources have optical counterparts with R <
22. Eight of these from two different EGRET sources have been observed in the
B, V, and R bands in more than one epoch and the analysis of these data is
ongoing. Any sources that are found to be variable will be the objects of

Localization of a 64-kDa phosphoprotein in the lumen between the outer and inner envelopes of pea chloroplasts
The identification and localization of a marker protein for the intermembrane space between the outer and inner chloroplast envelopes is described. This 64-kDa protein is very rapidly labeled by [γ-32P]ATP at very low (30 nM) ATP concentrations and the phosphoryl group exhibits a high turnover rate. It was possible to establish the presence of the 64-kDa protein in this plastid compartment by using different chloroplast envelope separation and isolation techniques. In addition comparison of labeling kinetics by intact and hypotonically lysed pea chloroplasts support the localization of the 64-kDa protein in the intermembrane space. The 64-kDa protein was present and could be labeled in mixed envelope membranes isolated from hypotonically lysed plastids. Mixed envelope membranes incorporated high amounts of 32P from [γ-32P]ATP into the 64-kDa protein, whereas separated outer and inner envelope membranes did not show significant phosphorylation of this protein. Water/Triton X-114 phase partitioning demonstrated that the 64-kDa protein is a hydrophilic polypeptide. These findings suggest that the 64-kDa protein is a soluble protein trapped in the space between the inner and outer envelope membranes. After sonication of mixed envelope membranes, the 64-kDa protein was no longer present in the membrane fraction, but could be found in the supernatant after a 110000 × g centrifugation
Exploring British adolescent rugby league players' experiences of professional academies and dropout.
The purposes of this study were threefold: to explore former rugby league players’ experiences of professional academy environments, to understand their reasons for dropping out of the sport, and to explore their recommendations for optimising future talent development environments. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine ex-professional academy rugby league players up to one year after dropping out of playing rugby. A combination of inductive and deductive thematic analysis was employed to analyse the data. The thematic analysis revealed three general dimensions: talent development pathways, reasons for dropout, and recommendations. The findings suggest that players’ talent development experiences, and the reasons for dropout could be explained by a complex interaction of micro (e.g. negative academy experiences), meso (e.g. education), exo (e.g. player pathway structures), and macro systems (e.g. transitions to other clubs). It is concluded from these findings that talent development pathways which lack a long-term focus, and emphasise early success are likely to result in increased risk of burnout, de-motivation, and subsequent dropout. From an applied perspective, talent development pathways must consider the many personal and environmental factors which interact to determine an individual’s talent development trajectory. Furthermore, by recognising the multiple factors that may influence development, the effectiveness of development pathways may be enhanced by neither excluding “potential” through inappropriate early identification, nor ignoring crucial talent development variables that contribute toward the fulfilment of potential
Flexible Lipid Bilayers in Implicit Solvent
A minimalist simulation model for lipid bilayers is presented. Each lipid is
represented by a flexible chain of beads in implicit solvent. The hydrophobic
effect is mimicked through an intermolecular pair potential localized at the
``water''/hydrocarbon tail interface. This potential guarantees realistic
interfacial tensions for lipids in a bilayer geometry. Lipids self assemble
into bilayer structures that display fluidity and elastic properties consistent
with experimental model membrane systems. Varying molecular flexibility allows
for tuning of elastic moduli and area/molecule over a range of values seen in

Implications of a Nonthermal Origin of the Excess EUV Emission from the Coma Cluster of Galaxies
The inverse Compton (IC) interpretation of the excess EUV emission, that was
recently reported from several clusters of galaxies, suggests that the amount
of relativistic electrons in the intracluster medium is highly significant,
W_e>10^{61} erg. Considering Coma as the prototype galaxy cluster of nonthermal
radiation, we discuss implications of the inverse Compton origin of the excess
EUV fluxes in the case of low intracluster magnetic fields of order 0.1 muG, as
required for the IC interpretation of the observed excess hard X-ray flux, and
in the case of high fields of order 1 muG as suggested by Faraday rotation
measurements. Although for such high intracluster fields the excess hard X-rays
will require an explanation other than by the IC effect, we show that the
excess EUV flux can be explained by the IC emission of a `relic' population of
electrons driven into the incipient intracluster medium at the epoch of
starburst activity by galactic winds, and later on reenergized by adiabatic
compression and/or large-scale shocks transmitted through the cluster as the
consequence of more recent merger events. For high magnetic fields B > 1 muG
the interpretation of the radio fluxes of Coma requires a second population of
electrons injected recently. They can be explained as secondaries produced by a
population of relativistic protons. We calculate the fluxes of gamma-rays to be
expected in both the low and high magnetic field scenarios, and discuss
possibilities to distinguish between these two principal options by future

On Shape Transformations and Shape Fluctuations of Cellular Compartments and Vesicles
We discuss the shape formation and shape transitions of simple bilayer vesicles in context with their role in biology. In the first part several classes of shape changes of vesicles of one lipid component are described and it is shown that these can be explained in terms of the bending energy concept in particular augmented by the bilayer coupling hypothesis. In the second
part shape changes and vesicle fission of vesicles composed of membranes of lipid mixtures are reported. These are explained in terms of coupling between local curvature and phase separation
The Host Galaxy and Optical Light Curve of the Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 980703
We present deep HST/STIS and ground-based photometry of the host galaxy of
the gamma-ray burst GRB 980703 taken 17, 551, 710, and 716 days after the
burst. We find that the host is a blue, slightly over-luminous galaxy with
V_gal = 23.00 +/- 0.10, (V-R)_gal = 0.43 +/- 0.13, and a centre that is
approximately 0.2 mag bluer than the outer regions of the galaxy. The galaxy
has a star-formation rate of 8-13 M_sun/yr, assuming no extinction in the host.
We find that the galaxy is best fit by a Sersic R^(1/n) profile with n ~= 1.0
and a half-light radius of 0.13 arcsec (= 0.72/h_100 proper kpc). This
corresponds to an exponential disk with a scale radius of 0.22 arcsec (=
1.21/h_100 proper kpc). Subtracting a fit with elliptical isophotes leaves
large residuals, which suggests that the host galaxy has a somewhat irregular
morphology, but we are unable to connect the location of GRB 980703 with any
special features in the host. The host galaxy appears to be a typical example
of a compact star forming galaxy similar to those found in the Hubble Deep
Field North. The R-band light curve of the optical afterglow associated with
this gamma-ray burst is consistent with a single power-law decay having a slope
of alpha = -1.37 +/- 0.14. Due to the bright underlying host galaxy the late
time properties of the light-curve are very poorly constrained. The decay of
the optical light curve is consistent with a contribution from an underlying
Type Ic supernova like SN1998bw, or a dust echo, but such contributions cannot

Higher Twist, Scaling, and Effective for Lepton Scattering in the Few GeV Region
We use a new scaling variable , and add low modifications to
GRV98 leading order parton distribution functions such that they can be used to
model electron, muon and neutrino inelastic scattering cross sections (and also

Active Membrane Fluctuations Studied by Micropipet Aspiration
We present a detailed analysis of the micropipet experiments recently
reported in J-B. Manneville et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 4356--4359 (1999),
including a derivation of the expected behaviour of the membrane tension as a
function of the areal strain in the case of an active membrane, i.e.,
containing a nonequilibrium noise source. We give a general expression, which
takes into account the effect of active centers both directly on the membrane,
and on the embedding fluid dynamics, keeping track of the coupling between the
density of active centers and the membrane curvature. The data of the
micropipet experiments are well reproduced by the new expressions. In
particular, we show that a natural choice of the parameters quantifying the
strength of the active noise explains both the large amplitude of the observed
effects and its remarkable insensitivity to the active-center density in the
