    Properties of surface waves determined via bistatic terahertz impulse ranging

    A bistatic terahertz impulse ranging system has permitted the full isolation and direct measurements of the surface wave loss and dispersion for terahertz frequencies on a dielectric cylinder. This system permits ranging investigations with variable bistatic angles between the source and detector. Direct, frequency dependent comparisons of surface wave loss and propagation velocity are compared to Mie theory and previous measurements of surface wave propagation over a 1 THz bandwidth.     Characterization of thin polymer films using terahertz time-domain interferometry

    An interferometer for broadband single-cycle THz pulses is developed based on the Michelson configuration. Total internal reflection of THz pulses in high-resistivity silicon prisms provides a nearly 180° phase shift of one arm relative to the other to achieve destructive interference. We show that due to automatic compensation for laser fluctuations by the interferometer, it is possible to measure the index and absorption of thin-film samples with more accuracy than is achievable with standard THz time-domain spectroscopy. We demonstrate characterization of the complex index of refraction of 2 μm thick Mylar (polyester) films. By measuring the signal amplitude directly in the time domain, the interferometer can be used for rapid measurements of film thickness with a resolution of better than 1 μm.Peer reviewedElectrical and Computer Engineerin

    Spike-based coupling between single neurons and populations across rat sensory cortices, perirhinal cortex, and hippocampus

    Cortical computations require coordination of neuronal activity within and across multiple areas. We characterized spiking relationships within and between areas by quantifying coupling of single neurons to population firing patterns. Single-neuron population coupling (SNPC) was investigated using ensemble recordings from hippocampal CA1 region and somatosensory, visual, and perirhinal cortices. Within-area coupling was heterogeneous across structures, with area CA1 showing higher levels than neocortical regions. In contrast to known anatomical connectivity, between-area coupling showed strong firing coherence of sensory neocortices with CA1, but less with perirhinal cortex. Cells in sensory neocortices and CA1 showed positive correlations between within- and between-area coupling; these were weaker for perirhinal cortex. All four areas harbored broadcasting cells, connecting to multiple external areas, which was uncorrelated to within-area coupling strength. When examining correlations between SNPC and spatial coding, we found that, if such correlations were significant, they were negative. This result was consistent with an overall preservation of SNPC across different brain states, suggesting a strong dependence on intrinsic network connectivity. Overall, SNPC offers an important window on cell-to-population synchronization in multi-area networks. Instead of pointing to specific information-coding functions, our results indicate a primary function of SNPC in dynamically organizing communication in systems composed of multiple, interconnected areas

    Effects of acute tryptophan depletion on executive function in healthy male volunteers

    BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive impairment is frequently described in a number of psychiatric disorders and may be a direct consequence of serotonergic dysfunction. As impairments in executive functions are some of the most frequently described, the purpose of this study was to examine the performance of normal volunteers on a range of executive tasks following a transient reduction of central serotonin (5-HT) levels using the method of acute tryptophan depletion (ATD). METHODS: Fifteen healthy male subjects participated in a within-subject, double-blind, counterbalanced crossover study. ATD was induced by ingestion of a 100 g amino-acid drink. Executive function was evaluated using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Stroop, Verbal Fluency and Trail Making. Visual analogue scales were administered to assess mood. RESULTS: Plasma free and total tryptophan concentrations were significantly reduced by the depleting drink (P < 0.001). ATD selectively improved motor speed/ attention on the Trails A test (P = 0.027), with no effect on subjective ratings of mood. Interaction effects between drink and the order of drink administration were observed on most neurocognitive tests. CONCLUSIONS: The improvement in simple motor speed/ attention following ATD is in keeping with the ascribed role of 5-HT in the cortex, however performance on tests of executive function is not robustly altered. The presence of interaction effects on most tasks suggests that subtle changes may occur but are masked, possibly by simple learning effects, in the context of a crossover design. This has implications for the design of future studies, particularly those examining executive functions
