    Spectral Characteristics of the 1960 Tsunami at Crescent City, CA

    Spectral characteristics of sea level fluctuations during the May 1960 Chilean Earthquake tsunami are investigated using digitized strip chart recordings from two docks within Crescent City Harbor. Peaks in sea level spectra at the two docks near 10-3 Hz and near 2.1 x10-3 Hz correspond to the two lowest frequency harbor modes, occurring above the frequency band most strongly excited by the tsunami. Tidal modulation of harbor spectral structure at very short periods is observed. Theoretical estimates of shelf edge wave resonant modes fall within the frequency band strongly excited by the tsunami, in contrast to modeled edge waves from a seismic event near Cape Mendocino that show no evidence of the reflection necessary for a strong shelf resonance. This suggests that heightened susceptibility of sea level (but not necessarily currents) at Crescent City to tsunami is not due primarily to either harbor or shelf resonances

    Parental cultural models and resources for understanding mathematical achievement in culturally diverse school settings

    This paper proposes that the theoretical concept of cultural models can offer useful insights into parental involvement in their child’s mathematical achievement and the resources they use to go about gaining information in culturally diverse learning settings. This examination takes place within a cultural-developmental framework and draws on the notion of cultural models to explicate parental understandings of their child’s mathematics achievement and what resources are used to make sense of this. Three parental resources are scrutinized: (a) the teacher, (b) examination test results, and (c) constructions of child development. The interviews with 22 parents revealed some ambiguity around the interpretation of these resources by the parent, which was often the result of incongruent cultural models held between the home and the school. The resources mentioned are often perceived as being unambiguous but show themselves instead to be highly interpretive because of the diversity of cultural models in existence in culturally diverse settings. Parents who are in minority or marginalized positions tend to have difficulties in interpreting cultural models held by school, thereby disempowering them to be parentally involved in the way the school would like

    The role of health determinants in the influenza vaccination uptake among older adults (65+): a scope review

    Background: Although the burden of influenza infection is the highest in older adults, vaccination coverage remains low, despite this age group being more vulnerable than others. Aims: Given the current pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, it was the aim of this scope review to update knowledge on factors affecting seasonal influenza vaccine uptake among older adults to strengthen prevention approaches in the context of an overall burden of infectious diseases. Methods: We searched bibliographic databases from 2012 to 2019. All studies reviewed one or more social determinant of health listed by WHO, or factors affecting the decision-making process whether to accept influenza vaccine or not. Results: Overall, 44 studies were included, 41 determinants were extracted and summarized into six categories. Older age and constitutional factors including multiple chronic diseases as well as preventive lifestyle and frequent routine healthcare utilization positively affected vaccination uptake (VU). Living and working conditions are also researched determinants of influenza vaccine uptake. A small number of studies explored the role of social inclusion and system-based interventions. Discussion and conclusions: This scope review provides a comprehensive overview on factors affecting seasonal influenza vaccination uptake among older citizens. The review also clearly shows gaps for evidence on system-based level or political strategies to improve vaccination uptake
