Multiparton Interactions in Photoproduction at HERA
The high energy photoproduction of jets is being observed at the ep collider,
HERA. It may be that the HERA centre-of-mass energy is sufficiently large that
the production of more than one pair of jets per ep collision becomes possible,
owing to the large number density of the probed gluons. We construct a Monte
Carlo model of such multiparton interactions and study their effects on a wide
range of physical observables. The conclusion is that multiple interactions
could have very significant effects upon the photoproduction final state and
that this would for example make extractions of the gluon density in the photon
rather difficult. Total rates for the production of many (i.e. > 2) jets could
provide direct evidence for the presence of multiple interactions, although
parton showering and hadronization significantly affect low transverse energy

Quiescent consistency: Defining and verifying relaxed linearizability
Concurrent data structures like stacks, sets or queues need to be highly optimized to provide large degrees of parallelism with reduced contention. Linearizability, a key consistency condition for concurrent objects, sometimes limits the potential for optimization. Hence algorithm designers have started to build concurrent data structures that are not linearizable but only satisfy relaxed consistency requirements. In this paper, we study quiescent consistency as proposed by Shavit and Herlihy, which is one such relaxed condition. More precisely, we give the first formal definition of quiescent consistency, investigate its relationship with linearizability, and provide a proof technique for it based on (coupled) simulations. We demonstrate our proof technique by verifying quiescent consistency of a (non-linearizable) FIFO queue built using a diffraction tree. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland
Phenomenological description of the gamma* p cross section at low Q2
Low Q2 photon-proton cross sections are analysed using a simple,
QCD-motivated parametrisation ,
which gives a good description of the data. The Q2 dependence of the gamma* p
cross section is discussed in terms of the partonic transverse momenta of the

Charged Particle Multiplicity in Diffractive Deep Inelastic Scattering
The recent data from H1 Collaboration on hadron multiplicity in diffractive
DIS has been studied in the framework of perturbative QCD as a function of
invariant diffractive mass. The formulas obtained explain the observed excess
of particle production in diffractive DIS relative to that in DIS and
annihilation. It is shown that the results are sensitive to the quark--gluon
structure of the Pomeron. Namely, the data say in favour of a super-hard gluon

Profitability of Crop Rotations in Iowa in a Stress Environment
Small grains crops have traditionally been included in Midwestern cropping systems, but their use is restricted by uncertain yields, poor prices, and lack of on-farm uses in operations without livestock. We compared the corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) crop rotation to actual or simulated three-yr rotations at two sites in Iowa between 1986 and 1989. Water was generally more limiting than was nitrogen, which produced minimal response in the corn to which it was applied. April-November precipitation at Nashua, Iowa ranged from 59 to 111 % of average, while at Des Moines, Iowa it was 77% of normal in 1988 and 102% in 1989.
Each rotation was subjected to economic analysis using Iowa State University figures for costs of operations and inputs. Commodity prices were set assuming nonparticipation in the government programs of the time. The rotations that depended on hay cuttings to recoup seeding costs never achieved that goal. Oat (Avena sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) harvests did largely recover the cropping expenses of the systems that included them. Thus, in certain environments no sacrifice in short-term profitability is required in trade-off for the long-term conservation and economic benefits of diversified rotations
Colorless and colored gluon-clusters in nucleon?
It is suggested that virtual gluon-clusters exist in nucleon, and that such
colorless and colored objects manifest themselves in the small region of
inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering processes. The relationship between the
space-time properties of such clusters and the striking features observed in
these scattering processes is discussed. A phase-space model is used to show
how quantitative results can be obtained in such an approach. The results of
this model-calculation are in reasonable agreement with the existing data.

Exclusive diffractive processes and the quark substructure of mesons
Exclusive diffractive processes on the nucleon are investigated within a
model in which the quark-nucleon interaction is mediated by Pomeron exchange
and the quark substructure of mesons is described within a framework based on
the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD. The model quark-nucleon interaction has
four parameters which are completely determined by high-energy and elastic scattering data. The model is then used to predict vector-meson
electroproduction observables. The obtained - and -meson
electroproduction cross sections are in excellent agreement with experimental
data. The predicted dependence of -meson electroproduction also
agrees with experimental data. It is shown that confined-quark dynamics play a
central role in determining the behavior of the diffractive, vector-meson
electroproduction cross section. In particular, the onset of the asymptotic
behavior of the cross section is determined by a momentum scale that is
set by the current-quark masses of the quark and antiquark inside the vector
meson. This is the origin of the striking differences between the
dependence of -, - and -meson electroproduction cross

Inelastic diffraction and color-singlet gluon-clusters in high-energy hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron collisions
It is proposed, that ``the colorless objects'' which manifest themselves in
large-rapidity-gap events are color-singlet gluon-clusters due to
self-organized criticality (SOC), and that optical-geometrical concepts and
methods are useful in examing the space-time properties of such objects. A
simple analytical expression for the -dependence of the inelastic single
diffractive cross section ( is the four-momentum transfer
squared) is derived. Comparison with the existing data and predictions for
future experiments are presented. The main differences and similarities between
the SOC-approach and the ``Partons in the Pomeron (Pomeron and
