    Persistent current formation in a high-temperature Bose-Einstein condensate: an experimental test for c-field theory

    Experimental stirring of a toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensate at high temperature generates a disordered array of quantum vortices that decays via thermal dissipation to form a macroscopic persistent current [T. W. Neely em et al. arXiv:1204.1102 (2012)]. We perform 3D numerical simulations of the experimental sequence within the Stochastic Projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation using ab initio determined reservoir parameters. We find that both damping and noise are essential for describing the dynamics of the high-temperature Bose field.     Approaching a parameter-free metadynamics

    We present a unique derivation of metadynamics. The starting point for the derivation is an on-the-fly reweighting scheme but through an approximation we recover the standard metadynamics and the well-tempered metadynamics in a general form while never appealing to the extended Lagrangian framework. This work leads to a more robust understanding of the error in the computed free energy than what has been obtained previously. Moreover, a formula for the exact free energy is introduced. The formula can be used to post-process any existing well-tempered metadynamics data allowing one, in principle, to obtain an exact free energy regardless the metadynamics parameters.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    A pp-adic RanSaC algorithm for stereo vision using Hensel lifting

    A pp-adic variation of the Ran(dom) Sa(mple) C(onsensus) method for solving the relative pose problem in stereo vision is developped. From two 2-adically encoded images a random sample of five pairs of corresponding points is taken, and the equations for the essential matrix are solved by lifting solutions modulo 2 to the 2-adic integers. A recently devised pp-adic hierarchical classification algorithm imitating the known LBG quantisation method classifies the solutions for all the samples after having determined the number of clusters using the known intra-inter validity of clusterings.     DNA methylation associated with postpartum depressive symptoms overlaps findings from a genome-wide association meta-analysis of depression

    Background Perinatal depressive symptoms have been linked to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes. The etiology associated with perinatal depressive psychopathology is poorly understood, but accumulating evidence suggests that understanding inter-individual differences in DNA methylation (DNAm) patterning may provide insight regarding the genomic regions salient to the risk liability of perinatal depressive psychopathology. Results Genome-wide DNAm was measured in maternal peripheral blood using the Infinium MethylationEPIC microarray. Ninety-two participants (46% African-American) had DNAm samples that passed all quality control metrics, and all participants were within 7 months of delivery. Linear models were constructed to identify differentially methylated sites and regions, and permutation testing was utilized to assess significance. Differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were defined as genomic regions of consistent DNAm change with at least two probes within 1 kb of each other. Maternal age, current smoking status, estimated cell-type proportions, ancestry-relevant principal components, days since delivery, and chip position served as covariates to adjust for technical and biological factors. Current postpartum depressive symptoms were measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Ninety-eight DMRs were significant (false discovery rate \u3c 5%) and overlapped 92 genes. Three of the regions overlap loci from the latest Psychiatric Genomics Consortium meta-analysis of depression. Conclusions Many of the genes identified in this analysis corroborate previous allelic, transcriptomic, and DNAm association results related to depressive phenotypes. Future work should integrate data from multi-omic platforms to understand the functional relevance of these DMRs and refine DNAm association results by limiting phenotypic heterogeneity and clarifying if DNAm differences relate to the timing of onset, severity, duration of perinatal mental health outcomes of the current pregnancy or to previous history of depressive psychopathology

    A spectroscopically confirmed z=1.327 galaxy-scale deflector magnifying a z~8 Lyman-Break galaxy in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies survey

    We present a detailed analysis of an individual case of gravitational lensing of a z8z\sim8 Lyman-Break galaxy (LBG) in a blank field, identified in Hubble Space Telescope imaging obtained as part of the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies survey. To investigate the close proximity of the bright (mAB=25.8m_{AB}=25.8) Y098Y_{098}-dropout to a small group of foreground galaxies, we obtained deep spectroscopy of the dropout and two foreground galaxies using VLT/X-Shooter. We detect H-α\alpha, H-β\beta, [OIII] and [OII] emission in the brightest two foreground galaxies (unresolved at the natural seeing of 0.80.8 arcsec), placing the pair at z=1.327z=1.327. We can rule out emission lines contributing all of the observed broadband flux in H160H_{160} band at 70σ70\sigma, allowing us to exclude the z8z\sim8 candidate as a low redshift interloper with broadband photometry dominated by strong emission lines. The foreground galaxy pair lies at the peak of the luminosity, redshift and separation distributions for deflectors of strongly lensed z8z\sim8 objects, and we make a marginal detection of a demagnified secondary image in the deepest (J125J_{125}) filter. We show that the configuration can be accurately modelled by a singular isothermal ellipsoidal deflector and a S\'{e}rsic source magnified by a factor of μ=4.3±0.2\mu=4.3\pm0.2. The reconstructed source in the best-fitting model is consistent with luminosities and morphologies of z8z\sim8 LBGs in the literature. The lens model yields a group mass of 9.62±0.31×1011M9.62\pm0.31\times10^{11} M_{\odot} and a stellar mass-to-light ratio for the brightest deflector galaxy of M/LB=2.30.6+0.8M/LM_{\star}/L_{B}=2.3^{+0.8}_{-0.6} M_{\odot}/L_{\odot} within its effective radius. The foreground galaxies' redshifts would make this one of the few strong lensing deflectors discovered at z>1z>1.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 16 pages, 11 figures, 3 table

    Cosmic String Formation from Correlated Fields

    We simulate the formation of cosmic strings at the zeros of a complex Gaussian field with a power spectrum P(k)knP(k) \propto k^n, specifically addressing the issue of the fraction of length in infinite strings. We make two improvements over previous simulations: we include a non-zero random background field in our box to simulate the effect of long-wavelength modes, and we examine the effects of smoothing the field on small scales. The inclusion of the background field significantly reduces the fraction of length in infinite strings for n<2n < -2. Our results are consistent with the possibility that infinite strings disappear at some n=ncn = n_c in the range 3nc<2.2-3 \le n_c < -2.2, although we cannot rule out nc=3n_c = -3, in which case infinite strings would disappear only at the point where the mean string density goes to zero. We present an analytic argument which suggests the latter case. Smoothing on small scales eliminates closed loops on the order of the lattice cell size and leads to a ``lattice-free" estimate of the infinite string fraction.     A Comparative Study of the Valence Electronic Excitations of N_2 by Inelastic X-ray and Electron Scattering

    Bound state, valence electronic excitation spectra of N_2 are probed by nonresonant inelastic x-ray and electron scattering. Within the usual theoretical treatments, dynamical structure factors derived from the two probes should be identical. However, we find strong disagreements outside the dipole scattering limit, even at high probe energies. This suggests an unexpectedly important contribution from intra-molecular multiple scattering of the probe electron from core electrons or the nucleus.     Explosion of a collapsing Bose-Einstein condensate

    We show that elastic collisions between atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interactions lead to an explosion that ejects a large fraction of the collapsing condensate. We study variationally the dynamics of this explosion and find excellent agreement with recent experiments on magnetically trapped Rubidium-85. We also determine the energy and angular distribution of the ejected atoms during the collapse.Comment: Four pages of ReVTeX and five postscript figure
