Large spin-orbit splitting and weakly-anisotropic superconductivity revealed with single-crystalline noncentrosymmetric CaIrSi3

We report normal and superconducting properties of the Rashba-type noncentrosymmetric com- pound CaIrSi3, using single crystalline samples with nearly 100% superconducting volume fraction. The electronic density of states revealed by the hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy can be well explained by the relativistic first-principle band calculation. This indicates that strong spin-orbit interaction indeed affects the electronic states of this compound. The obtained H - T phase diagram exhibits only approximately 10% anisotropy, indicating that the superconducting properties are almost three dimensional. Nevertheless, strongly anisotropic vortex pinning is observed.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

Crystallographic and superconducting properties of the fully-gapped noncentrosymmetric 5d-electron superconductors CaMSi3 (M=Ir, Pt)

We report crystallographic, specific heat, transport, and magnetic properties of the recently discovered noncentrosymmetric 5d-electron superconductors CaIrSi3 (Tc = 3.6 K) and CaPtSi3 (Tc = 2.3 K). The specific heat suggests that these superconductors are fully gapped. The upper critical fields are less than 1 T, consistent with limitation by conventional orbital depairing. High, non-Pauli-limited {\mu}0 Hc2 values, often taken as a key signature of novel noncentrosymmetric physics, are not observed in these materials because the high carrier masses required to suppress orbital depairing and reveal the violated Pauli limit are not present.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

Assessment of Maternal Satisfaction with Facility-based Childbirth Care in the Rural Region of Tambacouda, Senegal

In Senegal, only 60% of mothers in rural areas deliver in health facilities. Mothers’ satisfaction with their facility-based childbirth experience is one of the factors in their choosing to deliver in such facilities in subsequent pregnancies. The objective of this study was to assess whether compliance with childbirth care based on the mothers’ perception of facility-based childbirth care contributes to the degree of maternal satisfaction. We conducted a secondary analysis of cross-sectional survey data collected from 259 mothers who had normal deliveries at facilities in rural areas of Senegal in 2011. The association between overall maternal satisfaction with childbirth care and 23 standard care survey items was assessed. The results showed that the degree of compliance with standard care and eight of 23 survey items were associated with maternal satisfaction. We conclude that to improve maternal satisfaction, facilities need to guarantee compliance with standard care.

Entropy change at the martensitic transformation in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni_{2+x}Mn_{1-x}Ga

The entropy change ΔS\Delta S between the high-temperature cubic phase and the low-temperature tetragonally-based martensitic phase of Ni2+x_{2+x}Mn1x_{1-x}Ga (x=00.20x = 0 - 0.20) alloys was studied. The experimental results obtained indicate that ΔS\Delta S in the Ni2+x_{2+x}Mn1x_{1-x}Ga alloys increases with the Ni excess xx. The increase of ΔS\Delta S is presumably accounted for by an increase of magnetic contribution to the entropy change. It is suggested that the change in modulation of the martensitic phase of Ni2+x_{2+x}Mn1x_{1-x}Ga results in discontinuity of the composition dependence of ΔS\Delta S.Comment: presented at MMM-47, to be published in J. Differential-difference system related to toroidal Lie algebra

We present a novel differential-difference system in (2+1)-dimensional space-time (one discrete, two continuum), arisen from the Bogoyavlensky's (2+1)-dimensional KdV hierarchy. Our method is based on the bilinear identity of the hierarchy, which is related to the vertex operator representation of the toroidal Lie algebra \sl_2^{tor}.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, pLaTeX2e, uses amsmath, amssymb, amsthm, graphic

Observation of weak temperature dependence of spin diffusion length in highly-doped Si by using a non-local 3-terminal method

We conduct an experimental investigation of temperature dependence of spin diffusion length in highly-doped n-type silicon by using a non-local 3-terminal method. Whereas an effect of spin drift is not ignorable to bias- and temperature-dependence of spin signals in non-metallic systems except for the case of a non-local 4-terminal method, it is not fully conclusive how the spin drift affects spin transport properties in highly-doped Si in a non-local 3-terminal method that is often used in Si spintronics. Here, we report on temperature dependence of spin diffusion length in the Si, and it is clarified that the spin transport is less affected by an external electric field.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
