Paragominas located in the northeastern region of Pará, Brazil, constitutes one of the emblematic regions of deforestation process in Amazonia, this process occurred with the consolidation of the BR-010 Road, in the end of the 60's. In this paper, it is accessed the landscape dynamics in the watershed Cinqüenta e Quatro and Sete rivers, from the use of TM/Landsat of 2002, 2004 and 2005 images, analyzed by supervised classification by regions. It was verified that the class Anthropic Forest still has a prominent role among the mapped units, while the pasture areas represent the dominant patters of land use. For the landscape dynamics, the greatest percentuals of stability occurred for the class Anthropic Forest and Advanced Secondary Regrowth. Among the classes of land use, the pasture areas were more stable, although small conversions occurred for the class Grain Agriculture
Longitudinal photocurrent spectroscopy of a single GaAs/AlGaAs v-groove quantum wire
Modulation-doped GaAs v-groove quantum wires (QWRs) have been fabricated with
novel electrical contacts made to two-dimensional electron-gas (2DEG)
reservoirs. Here, we present longitudinal photocurrent (photoconductivity/PC)
spectroscopy measurements of a single QWR. We clearly observe conductance in
the ground-state one-dimensional subbands; in addition, a highly
temperature-dependent response is seen from other structures within the
v-groove. The latter phenomenon is attributed to the effects of structural
topography and localization on carrier relaxation. The results of
power-dependent PC measurements suggest that the QWR behaves as a series of
weakly interacting localized states, at low temperatures
Carrier relaxation in GaAs v-groove quantum wires and the effects of localization
Carrier relaxation processes have been investigated in GaAs/AlGaAs v-groove
quantum wires (QWRs) with a large subband separation (46 meV). Signatures of
inhibited carrier relaxation mechanisms are seen in temperature-dependent
photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence-excitation (PLE) measurements; we
observe strong emission from the first excited state of the QWR below ~50 K.
This is attributed to reduced inter-subband relaxation via phonon scattering
between localized states. Theoretical calculations and experimental results
indicate that the pinch-off regions, which provide additional two-dimensional
confinement for the QWR structure, have a blocking effect on relaxation
mechanisms for certain structures within the v-groove. Time-resolved PL
measurements show that efficient carrier relaxation from excited QWR states
into the ground state, occurs only at temperatures > 30 K. Values for the low
temperature radiative lifetimes of the ground- and first excited-state excitons
have been obtained (340 ps and 160 ps respectively), and their corresponding
localization lengths along the wire estimated.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B Attempted to correct

Multivariable nonlinear advanced control of copolymerization processes
A reliable multivariable model of a process is a fundamental prerequisite for the design of an efficient control strategy. Though, such a model is often very hard to obtain via a first-principles approach. The development of two fuzzy model-based multivariable nonlinear predictive control schemes and their implementation on a copolymerization process are described in this paper. Multi-input/single-output models are developed using fuzzy logic and combined to form a parallel system model for simulation and online prediction. The behavior of the outlined controllers were compared to the dynamic matrix control (DMC) and to a typical nonlinear model-based predictive control (NMPC) for regulatory problem and the obtained results showed the effectiveness of the proposed structures
Corotation: its influence on the chemical abundance pattern of the Galaxy
A simple theory for the chemical enrichment of the Galaxy which takes into
account the effects of spiral arms on heavy elements output was developed. In
the framework of the model with the corotation close to the position of the Sun
in the Galaxy the observed abundance features are explained.Comment: LaTeX, 6 pages, 5 jpg figures, uses aastex.sty, submitted to ApJ Let
The Chemical Evolution of the Milky Way
The field of chemical evolution modeling of the Galaxy is experiencing in the
last years a phase of high activity and important achievements. There are,
however, several open questions which still need to be answered. In this review
I summarize what have been the most important achievements and what are some of
the most urgent questions to be answered.Comment: 10 pages including 3 figs, to appear in "The Chemical Evolution of
