Some energy conservative schemes for vibro-impacts of a beam on rigid obstacles
Caused by the problem of unilateral contact during vibrations of satellite solar arrays, the aim of this paper is to better understand such a phenomenon. Therefore, it is studied here a simplified model composed by a beam moving between rigid obstacles. Our purpose is to describe and compare some families of fully discretized approximations and their properties, in the case of non-penetration Signorini’s conditions. For this, starting from the works of Dumont and Paoli, we adapt to our beam model the singular dynamic method introduced by Renard. A particular emphasis is given in the use of a restitution coefficient in the impact law. Finally, various numerical results are presented and energy conservation capabilities of the schemes are investigated
This article reviews the development of scientific research on climate and air quality in cities in short,
exemplary sections. The literature allows for an analysis of the 2000-year history of urban climate research.
Probably the Indian and Roman cultures were the first who addressed the problem of overheating and
especially that of air pollution in their emerging urban settlements. At the beginning of this article, a
brief outline of this branch of environmental meteorology is given as part of an overall international
review. Subsequently, the lively history of urban climate research for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland
(acronym: D-A-CH) will be reported using numerous examples and milestones of its development
On the ideals of equivariant tree models
We introduce equivariant tree models in algebraic statistics, which unify and
generalise existing tree models such as the general Markov model, the strand
symmetric model, and group based models. We focus on the ideals of such models.
We show how the ideals for general trees can be determined from the ideals for
stars. The main novelty is our proof that this procedure yields the entire
ideal, not just an ideal defining the model set-theoretically. A corollary of
theoretical importance is that the ideal for a general tree is generated by the
ideals of its flattenings at vertices.Comment: 23 pages. Greatly improved exposition, in part following suggestions

Biochemical Reaction Rules with Constraints
International audienceWe propose React(C), an expressive programming language for stochastic modeling and simulation in systems biology, that is based on biochemical reactions with constraints. We prove that React(C) can express the stochastic pi-calculus, in contrast to previous rule-based programming languages, and further illustrate the high expressiveness of React(C). We present a stochastic simulator for React(C) independently of the choice of the constraint language C. Our simulator must decide for a given reaction rule whether it can be applied to the current biochemical solution. We show that this decision problem is NP-complete for arbitrary constraint systems C, and that it can be solved in polynomial time for rules of bounded arity. In practice, we propose to solve this problem by constraint programming
Computing the first eigenpair of the p-Laplacian via inverse iteration of sublinear supersolutions
We introduce an iterative method for computing the first eigenpair
for the -Laplacian operator with homogeneous Dirichlet
data as the limit of as , where
is the positive solution of the sublinear Lane-Emden equation
with same boundary data. The method is
shown to work for any smooth, bounded domain. Solutions to the Lane-Emden
problem are obtained through inverse iteration of a super-solution which is
derived from the solution to the torsional creep problem. Convergence of
to is in the -norm and the rate of convergence of
to is at least . Numerical evidence is
presented.Comment: Section 5 was rewritten. Jed Brown was added as autho
The Attributed Pi Calculus with Priorities
International audienceWe present the attributed -calculus for modeling concurrent systems with interaction constraints depending on the values of attributes of processes. The -calculus serves as a constraint language underlying the -calculus. Interaction constraints subsume priorities, by which to express global aspects of populations. We present a nondeterministic and a stochastic semantics for the attributed -calculus. We show how to encode the -calculus with priorities and polyadic synchronization @ and thus dynamic compartments, as well as the stochastic -calculus with concurrent objects spico. We illustrate the usefulness of the attributed -calculus for modeling biological systems at two particular examples: Euglena’s spatial movement in phototaxis, and cooperative protein binding in gene regulation of bacteriophage lambda. Furthermore, population-based model is supported beside individual-based modeling. A stochastic simulation algorithm for the attributed -calculus is derived from its stochastic semantics. We have implemented a simulator and present experimental results, that confirm the practical relevance of our approach
