A survey is given of techniques for spectroscopic analysis using intensity fluctuations. Particular attention is given to counting times, the role of macroscopic sources and detectors, and the electronic constraints placed on the observations
Interoperability between Multimedia Collections for Content and Metadata-Based Searching
Artiste is a European project developing a cross-collection search system for art galleries and museums. It combines image content retrieval with text based retrieval and uses RDF mappings in order to integrate diverse databases. The test sites of the Louvre, Victoria and Albert Museum, Uffizi Gallery and National Gallery London provide their own database schema for existing metadata, avoiding the need for migration to a common schema. The system will accept a query based on one museum’s fields and convert them, through an RDF mapping into a form suitable for querying the other collections. The nature of some of the image processing algorithms means that the system can be slow for some computations, so the system is session-based to allow the user to return to the results later. The system has been built within a J2EE/EJB framework, using the Jboss Enterprise Application Server
Effects of alarms on control of robot teams
Annunciator driven supervisory control (ADSC) is a widely used technique for directing human attention to control systems otherwise beyond their capabilities. ADSC requires associating abnormal parameter values with alarms in such a way that operator attention can be directed toward the involved subsystems or conditions. This is hard to achieve in multirobot control because it is difficult to distinguish abnormal conditions for states of a robot team. For largely independent tasks such as foraging, however, self-reflection can serve as a basis for alerting the operator to abnormalities of individual robots. While the search for targets remains unalarmed the resulting system approximates ADSC. The described experiment compares a control condition in which operators perform a multirobot urban search and rescue (USAR) task without alarms with ADSC (freely annunciated) and with a decision aid that limits operator workload by showing only the top alarm. No differences were found in area searched or victims found, however, operators in the freely annunciated condition were faster in detecting both the annunciated failures and victims entering their cameras' fields of view. Spontaneous symmetry breaking in a two-doublet lattice Higgs model
An SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two doublets of complex scalar fields is
considered. All continuous symmetries are identified and, using the
nonperturbative methods of lattice field theory, the phase diagram is mapped
out by direct numerical simulation. Two-doublet models contain phase
transitions that separate qualitatively distinct regions of the parameter
space. In some regions global symmetries are spontaneously broken. For some
special choices of the model parameters, the symmetry-breaking order parameter
is calculated. The pattern of symmetry breaking is verified further through

Microwave resonance of the reentrant insulating quantum Hall phases in the 1st excited Landau Level
We present measurements of the real diagonal microwave conductivity of the
reentrant insulating quantum Hall phases in the first excited Landau level at
temperatures below 50 mK. A resonance is detected around filling factor
and weaker frequency dependence is seen at and 2.28.
These measurements are consistent with the formation of a bubble phase crystal
centered around these at very low temperatures
