    Fermionic functional renormalization group for first-order phase transitions: a mean-field model

    First-order phase transitions in many-fermion systems are not detected in the susceptibility analysis of common renormalization-group (RG) approaches. Here we introduce a counterterm technique within the functional renormalization-group (fRG) formalism which allows access to all stable and metastable configurations. It becomes possible to study symmetry-broken states which occur through first-order transitions as well as hysteresis phenomena. For continuous transitions, the standard results are reproduced. As an example, we study discrete-symmetry breaking in a mean-field model for a commensurate charge-density wave. An additional benefit of the approach is that away from the critical temperature for the breaking of discrete symmetries large interactions can be avoided at all RG scales.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. v2 corrects typos, adds references and a discussion of the literatur

    Kinetic theory of cluster impingement in the framework of statistical mechanics of rigid disks

    The paper centres on the evaluation of the function n(theta)=N(theta)/N0, that is the normalized number of islands as a function of coverage 0<theta<1, given N0 initial nucleation centres (dots) having any degree of spatial correlation. A mean field approach has been employed: the islands have the same size at any coverage. In particular, as far as the random distribution of dots is concerned, the problem has been solved by considering the contribution of binary collisions between islands only. With regard to correlated dots, we generalize a method previously applied to the random case only. In passing, we have made use of the exclusion probability reported in [S. Torquato, B. Lu, J. Rubinstein, Phys.Rev.A 41, 2059 (1990)], for determining the kinetics of surface coverage in the case of correlated dots, improving our previous calculation [M. Tomellini, M. Fanfoni, M. Volpe Phys.     Magnetic properties of antiferromagnetically coupled CoFeB/Ru/CoFeB

    This work reports on the thermal stability of two amorphous CoFeB layers coupled antiferromagnetically via a thin Ru interlayer. The saturation field of the artificial ferrimagnet which is determined by the coupling, J, is almost independent on the annealing temperature up to more than 300 degree C. An annealing at more than 325 degree C significantly increases the coercivity, Hc, indicating the onset of crystallization.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Characteristics of Low-Latitude Coronal Holes near the Maximum of Solar cycle 24

    We investigate the statistics of 288 low-latitude coronal holes extracted from SDO/AIA-193 filtergrams over the time range 2011/01/01 to 2013/12/31. We analyse the distribution of characteristic coronal hole properties, such as the areas, mean AIA-193 intensities, and mean magnetic field densities, the local distribution of the SDO/AIA-193 intensity and the magnetic field within the coronal holes, and the distribution of magnetic flux tubes in coronal holes. We find that the mean magnetic field density of all coronal holes under study is 3.0 +- 1.6 G, and the percentage of unbalanced magnetic flux is 49 +- 16 %. The mean magnetic field density, the mean unsigned magnetic field density, and the percentage of unbalanced magnetic flux of coronal holes depend strongly pairwise on each other, with correlation coefficients cc > 0.92. Furthermore, we find that the unbalanced magnetic flux of the coronal holes is predominantly concentrated in magnetic flux tubes: 38 % (81 %) of the unbalanced magnetic flux of coronal holes arises from only 1 % (10 %) of the coronal hole area, clustered in magnetic flux tubes with field strengths > 50 G (10 G). The average magnetic field density and the unbalanced magnetic flux derived from the magnetic flux tubes correlate with the mean magnetic field density and the unbalanced magnetic flux of the overall coronal hole (cc > 0.93). These findings give evidence that the overall magnetic characteristics of coronal holes are governed by the characteristics of the magnetic flux tubes.Comment: 15 figure

    Morphological Thermodynamics of Fluids: Shape Dependence of Free Energies

    We examine the dependence of a thermodynamic potential of a fluid on the geometry of its container. If motion invariance, continuity, and additivity of the potential are fulfilled, only four morphometric measures are needed to describe fully the influence of an arbitrarily shaped container on the fluid. These three constraints can be understood as a more precise definition for the conventional term "extensive" and have as a consequence that the surface tension and other thermodynamic quantities contain, beside a constant term, only contributions linear in the mean and Gaussian curvature of the container and not an infinite number of curvatures as generally assumed before.     Adolescents care but don't feel responsible for farm animal welfare

    Adolescents are the next generation of consumers with the potential to raise standards of farm animal welfare—to theirsatisfaction—if their preferences and concerns are translated into accurate market drivers and signals. There are no published data about adolescent views of farm animal welfare to allow meaningful design, implementation, and evaluation of educational strategies to improve consideration of—and behavior toward—farm animals. Knowledge of farm animal welfare, as well as beliefs and attitudes about farm animal welfare and behavioral intention relevant to it were determined in a sample of ukadolescents, using a survey incorporating an extended version of the theory of planned behavior and novel assessment tools. Our results indicate that adolescents have only a limited knowledge of welfare problems for farm animals and welfare-relevant product labels. Intentions to identify welfare standards for the animals from whom their food was derived were weak. Although they cared about farm animal welfare and agreed with fundamental principles—for example, the provision of space and the absence of pain and suffering—like adults they held limited belief in the power and responsibility that they possess through their choices as consumers; responsibility was often shifted to others, such as the government and farmers

    Antiferromagnetically coupled CoFeB/Ru/CoFeB trilayers

    This work reports on the magnetic interlayer coupling between two amorphous CoFeB layers, separated by a thin Ru spacer. We observe an antiferromagnetic coupling which oscillates as a function of the Ru thickness x, with the second antiferromagnetic maximum found for x=1.0 to 1.1 nm. We have studied the switching of a CoFeB/Ru/CoFeB trilayer for a Ru thickness of 1.1 nm and found that the coercivity depends on the net magnetic moment, i.e. the thickness difference of the two CoFeB layers. The antiferromagnetic coupling is almost independent on the annealing temperatures up to 300 degree C while an annealing at 350 degree C reduces the coupling and increases the coercivity, indicating the onset of crystallization. Used as a soft electrode in a magnetic tunnel junction, a high tunneling magnetoresistance of about 50%, a well defined plateau and a rectangular switching behavior is achieved.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
