Z boson production in p+Pb collisions at sNNâ=5.02 TeV measured with the ATLAS detector
The ATLAS Collaboration has measured the inclusive production of Z bosons via their decays into electron and muon pairs in p+Pb collisions at â sNN = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are made using data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 29.4 nbâ1 and 28.1 nbâ1 for Z â ee and Z â ””, respectively. The results from the two channels are consistent and combined to obtain a cross section times the Z â `` branching ratio, integrated over the rapidity region |y â Z | < 3.5, of 139.8 ± 4.8 (stat.) ± 6.2 (syst.) ± 3.8 (lumi.) nb. Differential cross sections are presented as functions of the Z boson rapidity and transverse momentum, and compared with models based on parton distributions both with and without nuclear corrections. The centrality dependence of Z boson production in p+Pb collisions is measured and analyzed within the framework of a standard Glauber model and the modelâs extension for fluctuations of the underlying nucleon-nucleon scattering cross sectionFil: Aad, G.. Triggers for displaced decays of long-lived neutral particles in the ATLAS detector
A set of three dedicated triggers designed to detect long-lived neutral particles decaying throughout the ATLAS detector to a pair of hadronic jets is described. The efficiencies of the triggers for selecting displaced decays as a function of the decay position are presented for simulated events. The effect of pile-up interactions on the trigger efficiencies and the dependence of the trigger rate on instantaneous luminosity during the 2012 data-taking period at the LHC are discussedFil: Aad, G.. Measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry parameter αb and the helicity amplitudes for the decay Î0bâJ/Ï+Î0 with the ATLAS detector
A measurement of the parity-violating decay asymmetry parameter, αb, and the helicity amplitudes for the decay Îb0âJ/Ï(ÎŒ+ÎŒ-)Î0(pÏ-) is reported. The analysis is based on 1400 Îb0 and ÎÂŻb0 baryons selected in 4.6ââfb-1 of proton-proton collision data with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. By combining the Îb0 and ÎÂŻb0 samples under the assumption of CP conservation, the value of αb is measured to be 0.30±0.16(stat)±0.06(syst). This measurement provides a test of theoretical models based on perturbative QCD or heavy-quark effective theory.Fil: F. Monticelli.Fil: Atlas Collaboration
Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb^-1 of pp collision data at sqrt(s)=7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96 +0.26 -0.30 at Q^2=1.9 GeV^2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio sigma(W^+ + bar{c})/sigma(W^- + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s-bar{s} quark asymmetry.Fil: ATLAS Collaboration, G. Evidence for single top-quark production in the s-channel in protonâproton collisions at âs=8TeVwith the ATLAS detector using the Matrix Element Method
This Letter presents evidence for single top-quark production in the s-channel using protonâ proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is performed on events containing one isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum and exactly two b-tagged jets in the final state. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fbâ1 . The signal is extracted using a maximum-likelihood fit of a discriminant which is based on the matrix element method and optimized in order to separate single-top-quark s-channel events from the main background contributions, which are top-quark pair production and W boson production in association with heavy-flavour jets. The measurement leads to an observed signal significance of 3.2 standard deviations and a measured cross-section of Ïs = 4.8±0.8(stat.)+1.6 â1.3 (syst.) pb, which is consistent with the Standard Model expectation. The expected significance for the analysis is 3.9 standard deviations
Measurement of colour flow with the jet pull angle in ttÂŻ events using the ATLAS detector at âs = 8 TeV
The distribution and orientation of energy inside jets is predicted to be an experimental handle on colour connections between the hard--scatter quarks and gluons initiating the jets. This Letter presents a measurement of the distribution of one such variable, the jet pull angle. The pull angle is measured for jets produced in ttÂŻ events with one W boson decaying leptonically and the other decaying to jets using 20.3 fbâ1 of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at a centre--of--mass energy of sâ=8 TeV at the LHC. The jet pull angle distribution is corrected for detector resolution and acceptance effects and is compared to various models
Measurement of transverse energyâenergy correlations in multi-jet events in pp collisions at âs = 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector and determination of the strong coupling constant αs(mZ )
High transverse momentum jets produced in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV are used to measure the transverse energyâenergy correlation function and its associated azimuthal asymmetry. The data were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in the year 2011 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 158 pbâ1. The selection criteria demand the average transverse momentum of the two leading jets in an event to be larger than 250 GeV. The data at detector level are well described by Monte Carlo event generators. They are unfolded to the particle level and compared with theoretical calculations at next-to-leading-order accuracy. The agreement between data and theory is good and provides a precision test of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics at large momentum transfers. From this comparison, the strong coupling constant given at the Z boson mass is determined to be αs(mZ ) = 0.1173 ± 0.0010 (exp.) +0.0065 â0.0026 (theo.)
