Changes in the subsurface stratification of the Sun with the 11-year activity cycle
We report on the changes of the Sun's subsurface stratification inferred from
helioseismology data. Using SOHO/MDI (SOlar and Heliospheric
Observatory/Michelson Doppler Imager) data for the last 9 years and, more
precisely, the temporal variation of f-mode frequencies, we have computed the
variation of the radius of subsurface layers of the Sun by applying
helioseismic inversions. We have found a variability of the ``helioseismic''
radius in antiphase with the solar activity, with the strongest variations of
the stratification being just below the surface around 0.995.
Besides, the radius of the deeper layers of the Sun, between 0.975
and 0.99 changes in phase with the 11-year cycle.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted in ApJ
Repetition and difference: Lefebvre, Le Corbusier and modernity's (im)moral landscape: a commentary
This article engages with the relationship between social theory, architectural theory and material culture. The article is a reply to an article in a previous volume of the journal in question (Smith, M. (2001) ‘Repetition and difference: Lefebvre, Le Corbusier and modernity’s (im)moral landscape’, Ethics, Place and Environment, 4(1), 31-34) and, consequently, is also a direct engagement with another academic's scholarship. It represents a critique of their work as well as a recasting of their ideas, arguing that the matter in question went beyond interpretative issues to a direct critique of another author's scholarship on both Le Corbusier and Lefebvre. A reply to my article from the author of the original article was carried in a later issue of the journal (Smith, M. (2002) ‘Ethical Difference(s): a Response to Maycroft on Le Corbusier and Lefebvre’, Ethics, Place and Environment, 5(3), 260-269)
Incommensurate Mott Insulator in One-Dimensional Electron Systems close to Quarter Filling
A possibility of a metal-insulator transition in molecular conductors has
been studied for systems composed of donor molecules and fully ionized anions
with an incommensurate ratio close to 2:1 based on a one-dimensional extended
Hubbard model, where the donor carriers are slightly deviated from quarter
filling and under an incommensurate periodic potential from the anions. By use
of the renormalization group method, interplay between commensurability energy
on the donor lattice and that from the anion potential has been studied and it
has been found that an "incommensurate Mott insulator" can be generated. This
theoretical finding will explain the metal-insulator transition observed in

Performing Place: A Rhythmanalysis of the City of London
Through its focus on the City of London as a particular work sector and setting, this paper emphasizes the symbolic and material significance of place to understanding the lived experiences of power relations within organizational life. The socio-cultural and material aspects of the City are explored through an analysis of the rhythms of place, as well through interview data. Using a methodological approach based on Lefebvre’s Rhythmanalysis in order to develop an embodied, immersive sense of how the City is experienced as a workplace, the paper makes a methodological, empirical and theoretical contribution to an understanding of the way in which rhythms shape how place is performed. Using rhythmanalysis as a method, the paper shows the relationship between rhythms and the performances of place, foregrounding a subjective, embodied and experiential way of researching the places and spaces of organizing
Mott Transition, Compressibility Divergence and P-T Phase Diagram of Layered Organic Superconductors: An Ultrasonic Investigation
The phase diagram of the organic superconductor
-(BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)Cl has been investigated by ultrasonic
velocity measurements under helium gas pressure. Different phase transitions
were identified trough several elastic anomalies characterized from isobaric
and isothermal sweeps. Our data reveal two crossover lines that end on the
critical point terminating the first-order Mott transition line. When the
critical point is approached along these lines, we observe a dramatic softening
of the velocity which is consistent with a diverging compressibility of the
electronic degrees of freedom.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Validity of adiabaticity in Cavity QED
This paper deals with the concept of adiabaticity for fully quantum
mechanically cavity QED models. The physically interesting cases of Gaussian
and standing wave shapes of the cavity mode are considered. An analytical
approximate measure for adiabaticity is given and compared with numerical wave
packet simulations. Good agreement is obtained where the approximations are
expected to be valid. Usually for cavity QED systems, the large atom-field
detuning case is considered as the adiabatic limit. We, however, show that
adiabaticity is also valid, for the Gaussian mode shape, in the opposite limit.
Effective semiclassical time dependent models, which do not take into account
the shape of the wave packet, are derived. Corrections to such an effective
theory, which are purely quantum mechanical, are discussed. It is shown that
many of the results presented can be applied to time dependent two-level

Substitution Effect by Deuterated Donors on Superconductivity in -(BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)]Br
We investigate the superconductivity in the deuterated BEDT-TTF molecular
substitution system
-[(h8-BEDT-TTF)(d8-BEDT-TTF)]Cu[N(CN)]Br, where h8
and d8 denote fully hydrogenated and deuterated molecules, respectively.
Systematic and wide range ( = 0 -- 1) substitution can control chemical
pressure finely near the Mott boundary, which results in the modification of
the superconductivity. After cooling slowly, the increase of
observed up to 0.1 is evidently caused by the chemical pressure
effect. Neither reduction of nor suppression of
superconducting volume fraction is found below 0.5. This demonstrates
that the effect of disorder by substitution is negligible in the present
system. With further increase of , both and superconducting
