Scalar Quarkonium Masses and Mixing with the Lightest Scalar Glueball

    Get PDF
We evaluate the continuum limit of the valence (quenched) approximation to the mass of the lightest scalar quarkonium state, for a range of different quark masses, and to the mixing energy between these states and the lightest scalar glueball. Our results support the interpretation of f0(1710)f_0(1710) as composed mainly of the lightest scalar glueball.Comment: 14 pages of Latex, 5 PostScript figure

Sainfoin – New Data on Anthelmintic Effects and Production in Sheep and Goats

    Get PDF
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are one of the most important problems affecting health and therefore performance and welfare in small ruminant husbandry. The control of these parasites in the past strongly relied on the repeated use of anthelmintic drugs. This has led to nematode populations which are resistant to most of the currently available anthelmintics. Furthermore customer’s demands for organic and residue free animal products are increasing. The aforementioned problems have given a strong impetus for the development of new non-chemical strategies to control GIN. Previous research has pointed out the anthelmintic potential of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) and other tanniferous (CT) feed sources in goats and lambs infected with GIN. A recent Swiss experiment focussed on the use of sainfoin and field bean (Vicia faba, cv. Scirocco) as single CT sources as well as in combination for additional synergic effects, to reduce periparturient GIN egg rise of ewes in late gestation and early lactation. Another experiment with Alpine goats concentrated on the influence of sainfoin on milk performance and cheese quality. The results of these experiments will be presented and discussed in connection with previous knowledge on (i) anthelmintic effects of sainfoin and (ii) the influence of sainfoin administration on performance

Glueball calculations in large-N_c gauge theory

    Get PDF
We use the light-front Hamiltonian of transverse lattice gauge theory to compute from first principles the glueball spectrum and light-front wavefunctions in the leading order of the 1/N_c colour expansion. We find 0^{++}, 2^{++}, and 1^{+-} glueballs having masses consistent with N_c=3 data available from Euclidean lattice path integral methods. The wavefunctions exhibit a light-front constituent gluon structure.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, uses macro boxedeps.tex, minor corrections in revised versio

Decays of J/ψJ/\psi and ψ\psi^\prime into vector and pseudoscalar meson and the pseudoscalar glueball-qqˉq\bar{q} mixing

We introduce a parametrization scheme for J/ψ(ψ)VPJ/\psi(\psi^\prime)\to VP where the effects of SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking and doubly OZI-rule violation (DOZI) can be parametrized by certain parameters with explicit physical interpretations. This scheme can be used to clarify the glueball-qqˉq\bar{q} mixing within the pseudoscalar mesons. We also include the contributions from the electromagnetic (EM) decays of J/ψJ/\psi and ψ\psi^\prime via J/ψ(ψ)γVPJ/\psi(\psi^\prime)\to \gamma^*\to VP. Via study of the isospin violated channels, such as J/ψ(ψ)ρηJ/\psi(\psi^\prime)\to \rho\eta, ρη\rho\eta^\prime, ωπ0\omega\pi^0 and ϕπ0\phi\pi^0, reasonable constraints on the EM decay contributions are obtained. With the up-to-date experimental data for J/ψ(ψ)VPJ/\psi(\psi^\prime)\to VP, J/ψ(ψ)γPJ/\psi(\psi^\prime)\to \gamma P and PγγP\to \gamma\gamma, etc, we arrive at a consistent description of the mentioned processes with a minimal set of parameters. As a consequence, we find that there exists an overall suppression of the ψ3g\psi^\prime\to 3g form factors, which sheds some light on the long-standing "ρπ\rho\pi puzzle". By determining the glueball components inside the pseudoscalar η\eta and η\eta^\prime in three different glueball-qqˉq\bar{q} mixing schemes, we deduce that the lowest pseudoscalar glueball, if exists, has rather small qqˉq\bar{q} component, and it makes the η(1405)\eta(1405) a preferable candidate for 0+0^{-+} glueball.Comment: Revised version to appear on J. The Rotating Mass Matrix, the Strong CP Problem and Higgs Decay

We investigate a recent solution to the strong CP problem, obtaining a theta-angle of order unity, and show that a smooth trajectory of the massive eigenvector of a rank-one rotating mass matrix is consistent with the experimental data for both fermion masses and mixing angles (except for the masses of the lightest quarks). Using this trajectory we study Higgs decay and find suppression of Γ(Hccˉ)\Gamma(H\to c\bar{c}) compared to the standard model predictions for a range of Higgs masses. We also give limits for flavour violating decays, including a relatively large branching ratio for the τμ+\tau^-\mu^+ mode.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures; improvements to introduction and preliminarie

Probing scalar particle and unparticle couplings in e+ e- -> t tbar with transversely polarized beams

In searching for indications of new physics scalar particle and unparticle couplings in e^+ e^- \to t\bar t, we consider the role of transversely polarized initial beams at e^+ e^- colliders. By using a general relativistic spin density matrix formalism for describing the particles spin states, we find analytical expressions for the squared amplitude of the process with t or \bar t polarization measured, including the anomalous coupling contributions. Thanks to the transversely polarized initial beams these contributions are first order anomalous coupling corrections to the Standard Model (SM) contributions. We present and analyse the main features of the SM and anomalous coupling contributions. We show how differences between SM and anomalous coupling contributions provide means to search for anomalous coupling manifestations at future e^+ e^- linear colliders.Comment: 28 pages in LaTeX, including 7 encapsulated PostScript figures, published versio

    On dynamics of fermion generations

The hierarchy of fermion masses and EW symmetry breaking without elementary Higgs is studied on the basis of strong gauge field distributions governing the EW dynamics. The mechanism of symmetry breaking due to quark bilinears condensation is generalized to the case, when higher field correlators are present in the EW vacuum. Resulting wave functional yields several minima of quark bilinears, giving masses of three (or more) generations. Mixing is suggested to be due to kink solutions of the same wave functional. For a special form of this mixing ("coherent mixing") a realistic hierarhy of masses and of CKM coefficients is obtained and arguments in favor of the fourth generation are given. Possible important role of topological charges for CP violating phases and small masses of the first generation is stressed.Comment: 31 pages, typos corrected, references adde

Study of the reaction pbar p -> phi phi from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/c

    Get PDF
A study has been performed of the reaction pbar p -> 4K using in-flight antiprotons from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/c incident momentum interacting with a hydrogen jet target. The reaction is dominated by the production of a pair of phi mesons. The pbar p -> phi phi cross section rises sharply above threshold and then falls continuously as a function of increasing antiproton momentum. The overall magnitude of the cross section exceeds expectations from a simple application of the OZI rule by two orders of magnitude. In a fine scan around the xi/f_J(2230) resonance, no structure is observed. A limit is set for the double branching ratio B(xi -> pbar p) * B(xi -> phi phi) < 6e-5 for a spin 2 resonance of M = 2.235 GeV and Width = 15 MeV.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables, Latex. A hydrogen beam to characterize the ASACUSA antihydrogen hyperfine spectrometer

The antihydrogen programme of the ASACUSA collaboration at the antiproton decelerator of CERN focuses on Rabi-type measurements of the ground-state hyperfine splitting of antihydrogen for a test of the combined Charge-Parity-Time symmetry. The spectroscopy apparatus consists of a microwave cavity to drive hyperfine transitions and a superconducting sextupole magnet for quantum state analysis via Stern-Gerlach separation. However, the small production rates of antihydrogen forestall comprehensive performance studies on the spectroscopy apparatus. For this purpose a hydrogen source and detector have been developed which in conjunction with ASACUSA's hyperfine spectroscopy equipment form a complete Rabi experiment. We report on the formation of a cooled, polarized, and time modulated beam of atomic hydrogen and its detection using a quadrupole mass spectrometer and a lock-in amplification scheme. In addition key features of ASACUSA's hyperfine spectroscopy apparatus are discussed.

    Q-Value for the Fermi Beta-Decay of 46V

By comparing the Q-values for the 46Ti(3He,t)46V and 47Ti(3He,t)47}V reactions to the isobaric analog states the Q-value for the superallowed Fermi-decay of 46V has been determined as Q_{EC}(46V)=(7052.11+/-0.27) keV. The result is compatible with the values from two recent direct mass measurements but is at variance with the previously most precise reaction Q-value. As additional input quantity we have determined the neutron separation energy S_n(47Ti)=(8880.51+/-0.25) keV
