Performance evaluation of novel square-bordered position-sensitive silicon detectors with four-corner readout
We report on a recently developed novel type of large area (62 mm x 62 mm)
position sensitive silicon detector with four-corner readout. It consists of a
square-shaped ion-implanted resistive anode framed by additional
low-resistivity strips with resistances smaller than the anode surface
resistance by a factor of 2. The detector position linearity, position
resolution, and energy resolution were measured with alpha-particles and heavy
ions. In-beam experimental results reveal a position resolution below 1 mm
(FWHM) and a very good non-linearity of less than 1% (rms). The energy
resolution determined from 228Th alpha source measurements is around 2% (FWHM).Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Nucl. Instr. and Meth.
Astrophysical S factor for the radiative capture 12N(p,gamma)13O determined from the 14N(12N,13O)13C proton transfer reaction
The cross section of the radiative proton capture reaction on the drip line
nucleus 12N was investigated using the Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient
(ANC) method. We have used the 14N(12N,13O)13C proton transfer reaction at 12
MeV/nucleon to extract the ANC for 13O -> 12N + p and calculate from it the
direct component of the astrophysical S factor of the 12N(p,gamma)13O reaction.
The optical potentials used and the DWBA analysis of the proton transfer
reaction are discussed. For the entrance channel, the optical potential was
inferred from an elastic scattering measurement carried out at the same time
with the transfer measurement. From the transfer, we determined the square of
the ANC, C^2(13Og.s.) = 2.53 +/- 0.30 fm-1, and hence a value of 0.33(4) keVb
was obtained for the direct astrophysical S factor at zero energy. Constructive
interference at low energies between the direct and resonant captures leads to
an enhancement of Stotal(0) = 0.42(5) keVb. The 12N(p,gamma)13O reaction was
investigated in relation to the evolution of hydrogen-rich massive Population
III stars, for the role that it may play in the hot pp-chain nuclear burning

Asymptotic Normalization Coefficients for 13C+p->14N
The proton exchange reaction has been measured
at an incident energy of 162 MeV. Angular distributions were obtained for
proton transfer to the ground and low lying excited states in . Elastic
scattering of on also was measured out to the rainbow angle
region in order to find reliable optical model potentials. Asymptotic
normalization coefficients for the system have been
found for the ground state and the excited states at 2.313, 3.948, 5.106 and
5.834 MeV in . These asymptotic normalization coefficients will be used
in a determination of the S-factor for at solar
energies from a measurement of the proton transfer reaction

Optical model potentials involving loosely bound p-shell nuclei around 10 MeV/A
We present the results of a search for optical model potentials for use in
the description of elastic scattering and transfer reactions involving stable
and radioactive p-shell nuclei. This was done in connection with our program to
use transfer reactions to obtain data for nuclear astrophysics, in particular
for the determination of the astrophysical S_17 factor for 7Be(p,\gamma)8B
using two (7Be,8B) proton transfer reactions. Elastic scattering was measured
using 7Li, 10B, 13C and 14N projectiles on 9Be and 13C targets at or about
E/A=10 MeV/nucleon. Woods-Saxon type optical model potentials were extracted
and are compared with potentials obtained from a microscopic double folding
model. We use these results to find optical model potentials for unstable
nuclei with emphasis on the reliability of the description they provide for
peripheral proton transfer reactions. We discuss the uncertainty introduced by
the procedure in the prediction of the DWBA cross sections for the (7Be,8B)

Infrared absorption from Charge Density Waves in magnetic manganites
The infrared absorption of charge density waves coupled to a magnetic
background is first observed in two manganites La{1-x}Ca{x}MnO{3} with x = 0.5
and x = 0.67. In both cases a BCS-like gap 2 Delta (T), which for x=0.5 follows
the hysteretic ferro-antiferromagnetic transition, fully opens at a finite T{0}
< T{Neel}, with 2 Delta(T{0})/kT{c} close to 5. These results may also explain
the unusual coexistence of charge ordering and ferromagnetism in

Effect of plasma response on the fast ion losses due to ELM control coils in ITER
Mitigating edge localized modes (ELMs) with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) can increase energetic particle losses and resulting wall loads, which have previously been studied in the vacuum approximation. This paper presents recent results of fusion alpha and NBI ion losses in the ITER baseline scenario modelled with the Monte Carlo orbit following code ASCOT in a realistic magnetic field including the effect of the plasma response. The response was found to reduce alpha particle losses but increase NBI losses, with up to 4.2% of the injected power being lost. Additionally, some of the load in the divertor was found to be shifted away from the target plates toward the divertor dome
Search for the lepton-family-number nonconserving decay \mu -> e + \gamma
The MEGA experiment, which searched for the muon- and electron-number
violating decay \mu -> e + \gamma, is described. The spectrometer system, the
calibrations, the data taking procedures, the data analysis, and the
sensitivity of the experiment are discussed. The most stringent upper limit on
the branching ratio of \mu -> e + \gamma) < 1.2 x 10^{-11} was obtained
Discharge Age and Weight for Very Preterm Infants in Six Countries: 2012-2020
BACKGROUND
Postmenstrual age for surviving infants without congenital anomalies born at 24-29 weeks' gestational age from 2005 to 2018 in the USA increased 8 days, discharge weight increased 316 grams, and median discharge weight z-score increased 0.19 standard units. We asked whether increases were observed in other countries.
METHODS
We evaluated postmenstrual age, weight, and weight z-score at discharge of surviving infants without congenital anomalies born at 24-29 weeks' gestational age admitted to Vermont Oxford Network member hospitals in Austria, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA from 2012 to 2020.
RESULTS
After adjustment, the median postmenstrual age at discharge increased significantly in Austria (3.6 days, 99% CI [1.0, 6.3]), Italy (4.0 days [2.3, 5.6]), and the USA (5.4 days [5.0, 5.8]). Median discharge weight increased significantly in Austria (181 grams, 99% CI [95, 267]), Ireland (234 [143, 325]), Italy (133 [83, 182]), and the USA (207 [194, 220]). Median discharge weight z-score increased in Ireland (0.24 standard units, 99% CI [0.12, 0.36]) and the USA (0.15 [0.13, 0.16]). Discharge on human milk increased in Italy, Switzerland, and the UK, while going home on cardiorespiratory monitors decreased in Austria, Ireland, and USA and going home on oxygen decreased in Ireland.
CONCLUSIONS
In this international cohort of neonatal intensive care units, postmenstrual discharge age and weight increased in some, but not all, countries. Processes of care at discharge did not change in conjunction with age and weight increases
Measurement of Angular Distributions of Drell-Yan Dimuons in Interactions at 800 GeV/c
We report a measurement of the angular distributions of Drell-Yan dimuons
produced using an 800 GeV/c proton beam on a hydrogen target. The polar and
azimuthal angular distribution parameters have been extracted over the
kinematic range GeV/c (excluding the
resonance region), GeV/c, and . The angular
distributions are similar to those of , and both data sets are compared
with models which attribute the distribution either to the
presence of the transverse-momentum-dependent Boer-Mulders structure function
or to QCD effects. The data indicate the presence of both
mechanisms. The validity of the Lam-Tung relation in Drell-Yan is also
