Resonant Phenomena in Antihydrogen-Hydrogen Scattering
We present a treatment of cold hydrogen-antihydrogen collisions based on the
asymptotic properties of atom-antiatom interactions. We derive general formulas
for the elastic and inelastic cross sections and for the scattering lengths and
analyze their sensitivity to the parameters characterizing the inelasticity of
the collision process. Given the inelasticity, we obtain bounds for the complex
scattering length. We investigate the influence of strong nuclear forces and
the isotope effects in and collisions
and demonstrate enhancement of these effects due to the presence of the
near-threshold narrow () states. The
values of the elastic and inelastic cross-sections with simultaneous account of
rearrangement and strong forces are presented. General expressions for the
(complex) energies of the near-threshold states are

A systematic literature review of clinical trials and therapeutic applications of ibogaine
BACKGROUND
Iboga and its primary alkaloids, ibogaine and noribogaine, have been of interest to researchers and practitioners, mainly due to their putative efficacy in treating substance use disorders (SUDs). For many SUDs, still no effective pharmacotherapies exist. Distinct psychoactive and somatic effects of the iboga alkaloids set them apart from classic hallucinogens like LSD, mescaline, and psilocybin.
AIMS
The study team performed this systematic review focusing on clinical data and therapeutic interventions involving ibogaine and noribogaine.
METHODS
The team conducted a search for all publications up to December 7, 2020, using PubMed and Embase following PRISMA guidelines.
RESULTS
In total, we identified 743 records. In this review, we consider 24 studies, which included 705 individuals receiving ibogaine or noribogaine. This review includes two randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trials, one double-blind controlled clinical trial, 17 open-label studies or case series (including observational or retrospective studies), three case reports, and one retrospective survey. The published data suggest that ibogaine is an effective therapeutic intervention within the context of SUDs, reducing withdrawal symptoms and craving. Data also point toward a beneficial impact on depressive and trauma-related psychological symptoms. However, studies have reported severe medical complications and deaths, which seem to be associated with neuro- and cardiotoxic effects of ibogaine. Two of these fatalities were described in the 24 studies included in this review.
CONCLUSION
Treatment of SUDs and persisting comorbidities requires innovative treatment approaches. Rapid-onset therapies such as the application of ibogaine may offer novel treatment opportunities for specific individuals. Rigorous study designs within medical settings are necessary to warrant safe application, monitoring, and, possibly, medical intervention
Role of loop entropy in the force induced melting of DNA hairpin
Dynamics of a single stranded DNA, which can form a hairpin have been studied
in the constant force ensemble. Using Langevin dynamics simulations, we
obtained the force-temperature diagram, which differs from the theoretical
prediction based on the lattice model. Probability analysis of the extreme
bases of the stem revealed that at high temperature, the hairpin to coil
transition is entropy dominated and the loop contributes significantly in its
opening. However, at low temperature, the transition is force driven and the
hairpin opens from the stem side. It is shown that the elastic energy plays a
crucial role at high force. As a result, the phase diagram differs

Incorporating leaf chlorophyll content into a two-leaf terrestrial biosphere model for estimating carbon and water fluxes at a forest site
Chlorophyll is the main light-harvesting pigment in leaves, facilitating photosynthesis and indicating the supply of nitrogen for photosynthetic enzymes. In this study, we explore the feasibility of integrating leaf chlorophyll content (Chlleaf) into a Terrestrial Biosphere Model (TBM), as a proxy for the leaf maximum carboxylation rate at 25°C (Vmax25), for the purpose of improving carbon and water flux estimation. Measurements of Chlleaf and Vmax25 were made in a deciduous forest stand at the Borden Forest Research Station in southern Ontario, Canada, where carbon and water fluxes were measured by the eddy covariance method. The use of Chlleaf-based Vmax25 in the TBM significantly reduces the bias of estimated gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) and improves the temporal correlations between the simulated and the measured fluxes, relative to the commonly employed cases of using specified constant Vmax25, leaf area index (LAI)-based Vmax25 or specific leaf area (SLA)-based Vmax25. The biggest improvements are found in spring and fall, when the mean absolute errors (MAEs) between modelled and measured GPP are reduced from between 2.2–3.2 to 1.8gCm−2d−1 in spring and from between 2.1–2.8 to 1.8gCm−2 d−1 in fall. The MAEs in ET estimates are reduced from 0.7–0.8mmd−1 to 0.6mmd−1 in spring, but no significant improvement is noted in autumn. A two-leaf upscaling scheme is used to account for the uneven distribution of incoming solar radiation inside canopies and the associated physiological differences between leaves. We found that modelled Vmax25 in sunlit leaves is 34% larger than in the shaded leaves of the same Chlleaf, which echoes previous physiological studies on light acclimation of plants. This study represents the first case of the incorporation of chlorophyll as a proxy for Vmax25 in a two-leaf TBM at a forest stand and demonstrates the efficacy of using chlorophyll to constrain Vmax25 and reduce the uncertainties in GPP and ET simulations
Resonant Formation of Molecules in Deuterium: An Atomic Beam Measurement of Muon Catalyzed dt Fusion
Resonant formation of molecules in collisions of muonic tritium
() on D was investigated using a beam of atoms,
demonstrating a new direct approach in muon catalyzed fusion studies. Strong
epithermal resonances in formation were directly revealed for the
first time. From the time-of-flight analysis of fusion
events, a formation rate consistent with times the theoretical prediction was obtained. For the largest
peak at a resonance energy of eV, this corresponds to a rate
of s, more than an order of magnitude larger

Time dependence of breakdown in a global fiber-bundle model with continuous damage
A time-dependent global fiber-bundle model of fracture with continuous damage
is formulated in terms of a set of coupled non-linear differential equations. A
first integral of this set is analytically obtained. The time evolution of the
system is studied by applying a discrete probabilistic method. Several results
are discussed emphasizing their differences with the standard time-dependent
model. The results obtained show that with this simple model a variety of

The biology of cytotoxic cell granule exocytosis pathway: granzymes have evolved to induce cell death and inflammation
The granule exocytosis pathway of cytotoxic lymphocytes (Tc and NK cells) is critical for control of tumor development and viral infections. Granule-associated perforin and granzymes are key components in Tc cell-mediated function(s). On the basis of studies that showed granzymes A, B, C, K and M, to induce apoptosis in vitro, all granzymes were thought to also induce cell death in vivo. This review summarizes our present understanding of the biological processes elicited by purified granzyme A and granzyme as well as the processes induced by the more physiologically relevant cytotoxic cells secreting these proteases. The combined evidence supports the concept that the granule secretion pathway is not mono-specific but rather poly-functional including induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, besides their widely appreciated apoptotic properties
