    Effect of Damping on the Natural Frequencies of Linear Dynamic Systems

    An analysis is presented of the effect of weak damping on the natural frequencies of linear dynamic systems. It is shown that the highest natural frequency is always decreased by damping, but the lower natural frequencies may either increase or decrease, depending on the form of the damping matrix

    The Influence of Swirl Brakes and a Tip Discharge Orifice on the Rotordynamic Forces Generated by Discharge-to-Suction Leakage Flows in Shrouded Centrifugal Pumps

    This paper reports on experiments conducted in the Rotor Force Test Facility at the California Institute of Technology to examine the effects of a tip leakage restriction and swirl brakes on the rotordynamic forces due to leakage flows on an impeller undergoing a prescribed circular whirl. The experiments simulate the leakage flow conditions and geometry of the Alternate Turbopump Design (ATD) of the Space Shuttle High Pressure Oxygen Turbopump and are critical to evaluating the pump's instability problems. Results indicate the detrimental effects of a discharge orifice and the beneficial effects of adding swirl brakes. Plots of the tangential and normal forces versus whirl frequency ratio show a substantial increase in these forces along with destabilizing resonances when a discharge orifice is added. When swirl brakes are added, some of the detrimental effects of the orifice are reduced. For the tangential force, a significant reduction occurs and a destabilizing resonance appears to be eliminated. For the normal force, although the overall force is not reduced, once again a destabilizing resonance appears to be eliminated

    Increasing interest has been give to swirl brakes as a means of reducing destabilizing rotordynamic forces due to leakage flows in new high speed rocket turbopumps. Although swirl brakes have been used successfully in practice (such as with the Space Shuttle HPOTP), no experimental test until now have been performed to demonstrate their beneficial effect over a range of leakage flow rates. The present study investigates the effect of swirl brakes on rotordynamic forces generated by discharge-to-suction leakage flows in the annulus of shrouded centrifugal pumps over a range of subsynchronous whirl ratios and various leakage flow rates. In addition, the effectiveness of swirl brakes in the presence of leakage inlet (pump discharge) swirl is also demonstrated. The experimental data demonstrates that with the addition of swirl brakes a significant reduction in the destabilizing tangential force for lower flow rates is achieved. At higher flow rates, the brakes are detrimental. In the presence of leakage inlet swirl, brakes were effective over all leakage flow rates tested in reducing the range of whirl frequency ratio for which the tangential force is destabilizing

    Laser Velocimeter Measurements in the Leakage Annulus of a Whirling Shrouded Centrifugal Pump

    Previous experiments conducted in the Rotor Force Test Facility at the California Institute of Technology have thoroughly examined the effect of leakage flows on the rotordynamic forces on a centrifugal pump impeller undergoing a prescribed circular whirl. These leakage flows have been shown to contribute substantially to the total fluid induced forces acting on a pump. However, to date nothing is known of the flow field in the leakage annulus of shrouded centrifugal pumps. No attempt has been made to qualitatively or quantitatively examine the velocity field in the leakage annulus. Hence the test objective of this experiment is to acquire fluid velocity data for a geometry representative of the leakage annulus of a shrouded centrifugal pump while the rotor is whirling using laser velocimetry. Tests are performed over a range of whirl ratios and a flowrate typical of Space Shuttle Turbopump designs. In addition to a qualitive study of the flow field, the velocity data can be used to anchor flow models

    Comparison of calculated and measured pressures on straight and swept-tip model rotor blades

    Using the quasi-steady, full potential code, ROT22, pressures were calculated on straight and swept tip model helicopter rotor blades at advance ratios of 0.40 and 0.45, and into the transonic tip speed range. The calculated pressures were compared with values measured in the tip regions of the model blades. Good agreement was found over a wide range of azimuth angles when the shocks on the blade were not too strong. However, strong shocks persisted longer than predicted by ROT22 when the blade was in the second quadrant. Since the unsteady flow effects present at high advance ratios primarily affect shock waves, the underprediction of shock strengths is attributed to the simplifying, quasi-steady, assumption made in ROT22

    Experimental Validation of ARFI Surveillance of Subcutaneous Hemorrhage (ASSH) Using Calibrated Infusions in a Tissue-Mimicking Model and Dogs

    Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) Surveillance of Subcutaneous Hemorrhage (ASSH) has been previously demonstrated to differentiate bleeding phenotype and responses to therapy in dogs and humans, but to date, the method has lacked experimental validation. This work explores experimental validation of ASSH in a poroelastic tissue-mimic and in vivo in dogs. The experimental design exploits calibrated flow rates and infusion durations of evaporated milk in tofu or heparinized autologous blood in dogs. The validation approach enables controlled comparisons of ASSH-derived bleeding rate (BR) and time to hemostasis (TTH) metrics. In tissue-mimicking experiments, halving the calibrated flow rate yielded ASSH-derived BRs that decreased by 44% to 48%. Furthermore, for calibrated flow durations of 5.0 minutes and 7.0 minutes, average ASSH-derived TTH was 5.2 minutes and 7.0 minutes, respectively, with ASSH predicting the correct TTH in 78% of trials. In dogs undergoing calibrated autologous blood infusion, ASSH measured a 3-minute increase in TTH, corresponding to the same increase in the calibrated flow duration. For a measured 5% decrease in autologous infusion flow rate, ASSH detected a 7% decrease in BR. These tissue-mimicking and in vivo preclinical experimental validation studies suggest the ASSH BR and TTH measures reflect bleeding dynamics

    Comorbid chronic diseases, discordant impact on mortality in older people: a 14-year longitudinal population study

    Objectives: To determine the impact of comorbid chronic diseases on mortality in older people. Design: Prospective cohort study (1992e2006). Associations between numbers of chronic diseases or mutually exclusive comorbid chronic diseases on mortality over 14 years, by Cox proportional hazards model adjusting for sociodemographic variables or KaplaneMeier analyses, respectively. Setting: Population based, Australia. Participants: 2087 randomly selected participants aged 65yearsold,livinginthecommunityorinstitutions.Mainresults:Participantswith3e4or65 years old, living in the community or institutions. Main results: Participants with 3e4 or 5 diseases had a 25% (95% CI 1.05 to 1.5, p¼0.01) and 80% (95% CI 1.5 to 2.2, p<0.0001) increased risk of mortality, respectively, by comparison with no chronic disease, after adjusting for age, sex and residential status. When cardiovascular disease (CVD), mental health problem or diabetes were comorbid with arthritis, there was a trend towards increased survival (range 8.2e9.5 years) by comparison with CVD, mental health problem or diabetes alone (survival 5.8e6.9 years). This increase in survival with arthritis as a comorbidity was negated when CVD and mental health problems or CVD and diabetes were present in disease combinations together. Conclusion: Older people with $3 chronic diseases have increased risk of mortality, but discordant effects on survival depend on specific disease combinations.
