    On solving trust-region and other regularised subproblems in optimization

    The solution of trust-region and regularisation subproblems which arise in unconstrained optimization is considered. Building on the pioneering work of Gay, Mor´e and Sorensen, methods which obtain the solution of a sequence of parametrized linear systems by factorization are used. Enhancements using high-order polynomial approximation and inverse iteration ensure that the resulting method is both globally and asymptotically at least superlinearly convergent in all cases, including in the notorious hard case. Numerical experiments validate the effectiveness of our approach. The resulting software is available as packages TRS and RQS as part of the GALAHAD optimization library, and is especially designed for large-scale problems

    Recently Dollar and Wathen [14] proposed a class of incomplete factorizations for saddle-point problems, based upon earlier work by Schilders [40].     Effect of hydrogen on deformation structure and properties of CMSX-2 nickel-base single-crystal superalloy

    Material used in this study was a heat of the alloy CMSX-2. This nickel-based superalloy was provided in the form of oriented single crystals, solutionized for 3 hrs at 1315 C. It was then usually heat treated as follows: 1050 C/16h/air cool + 850 C/48h/air cool. The resulting microstructure is dominated by cuboidal, ordered gamma precipitates with a volume fraction of about 75% and an average size of 0.5 microns. In brief, the most compelling hydrogen induced-changes in deformation structure are: (1) enhanced dislocation accumulation in the gamma matrix; and (2) more extensive cross-slip of superdislocations in the gamma precipitates. The enhanced dislocation density in gamma acts to decrease the mean free path of a superdislocation, while easier cross slip hinders superdislocation movement by providing pinning points in the form of sessile jobs. Both processes contribute to the increase of flow stress and the notable work hardening that occurs prior to fracture

    A Bramble-Pasciak-like method with applications in optimization

    Saddle-point systems arise in many applications areas, in fact in any situation where an extremum principle arises with constraints. The Stokes problem describing slow viscous flow of an incompressible fluid is a classic example coming from partial differential equations and in the area of Optimization such problems are ubiquitous.\ud In this manuscript we show how new approaches for the solution of saddle-point systems arising in Optimization can be derived from the Bramble-Pasciak Conjugate Gradient approach widely used in PDEs and more recent generalizations thereof. In particular we derive a class of new solution methods based on the use of Preconditioned Conjugate Gradients in non-standard inner products and demonstrate how these can be understood through more standard machinery. We show connections to Constraint Preconditioning and give the results of numerical computations on a number of standard Optimization test examples

    Gross motion analysis of fingertip-based within-hand manipulation

    Fingertip-based within-hand manipulation, also called precision manipulation, refers to the repositioning of a grasped object within the workspace of a multi-fingered robot hand without breaking or changing the contact type between each fingertip and the object. Given a robot hand architecture and a set of assumed contact models, this paper presents a method to perform a gross motion analysis of its precision manipulation capabilities, regardless of the particularities of the object being manipulated. In particular, the technique allows the composition of the displacement manifold of the grasped object relative to the palm of the robot hand to be determined as well as the displacements that can be controlled—useful for high-level design and classification of hand function. The effects of a fingertip contacting a body in this analysis are modeled as kinematic chains composed of passive and resistant revolute joints; what permits the introduction of a general framework for the definition and classification of non-frictional and frictional contact types. Examples of the application of the proposed method in several architectures of multi-fingered hands with different contact assumptions are discussed; they illustrate how inappropriate contact conditions may lead to uncontrollable displacements of the grasped object
