    Using Cluster Analysis to Identify Subgroups of College Students at Increased Risk for Cardiovascular Disease

    Background and Purpose: To examine the co-occurrence of cardiovascular risk factors and cluster subgroups of college students for cardiovascular risks. Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted using co-occurrence patterns and hierarchical clustering analysis in 158 college students. Results: The top co-occurring cardiovascular risk factors were overweight/obese and hypertension (10.8%, n = 17). Of the total 34 risk factors that co-occurred, 30 of them involved being overweight/obese. A six-cluster-solution was obtained, two clusters displayed elevated levels of lifetime and 30-year cardiovascular disease risks. Conclusions: The hierarchical cluster analysis identified that single White males with a family history of heart disease, overweight/obese, hypertensive or diabetes, and occasionally (weekly) consumed red meat, take antihypertensive medication, and hyperlipidemia were considered the higher risk group compared to other subgroups

    Reducing the impacts of intra-class spectral variability on the accuracy of soft classification and super-resolution mapping of shoreline

    The main objective of this research is to assess the impact of intra-class spectral variation on the accuracy of soft classification and super-resolution mapping. The accuracy of both analyses was negatively related to the degree of intra-class spectral variation, but the effect could be reduced through use of spectral sub-classes. The latter is illustrated in mapping the shoreline at a sub-pixel scale from Landsat ETM+ data. Reducing the degree of intra-class spectral variation increased the accuracy of soft classification, with the correlation between predicted and actual class coverage rising from 0.87 to 0.94, and super-resolution mapping, with the RMSE in shoreline location decreasing from 41.13 m to 35.22 m

    Antimicrobial diterpenoids and triterpenoids from the stem bark of Croton macrostachys

    Antimicrobial-guided fractionation of the EtOAc extract of the stem bark of Croton macrostachys afforded five known compounds including two lupane triterpenoids, lupeol (1) and betulin (2), and three clerodane diterpenoids, floridolide A (3), hardwickic acid (4) and 12-oxo-hardwickic acid (5). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral studies and comparison with published data. The EtOAc extract and compounds 1, 2, 4 and 5 were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities by macro-dilutionmethod. The extract displayed significant antibacterial and antifungal activities (MIC = 31.25-1000 μg/ml). Betulin (2) and 12-oxo-hardwickic acid (5) were the most active compounds (MIC = 7.81-500 μg/ml). Themost sensitive microorganisms were Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25922 for bacteria and two Candida species, Candida albicans ATCC 24433 and Candida krusei ATCC 6258, for fungi. The isolation of these active antibacterial and antifungal principles supports the use of C. macrostachys in traditional medicine for the treatment of microbial infections.Keywords: Croton macrostachys; Euphorbiaceae; triterpenes; diterpenes; antibacterial; antifungal

    The weakness and strengths of sanitary inspections in improving food safety and hygiene in commercial restaurants in Rwanda

    Background: Food business in restaurants has undergone a significant development and it is attributed to the increase of urban population. This sector has big economic benefits. On the other hand, a large number of people may contract illnesses and others may die as result of eating contaminated food in these food premises. Therefore, sanitary inspections are conducted with the aim to stop food mishandling and to ensure that hygienic measures are taken in commercial restaurants.Objective: The aim of this paper was to highlight some weakness and strengths of sanitary inspections in improving food safety and hygiene in commercial restaurants in Rwanda.Methods: The authors reviewed literature to support their views.Results: Authors reveal that these inspections have some weaknesses such as unclear guidelines or unclear standards, and in some cases these inspections have accused for penalties instead of improving food safety and hygiene in restaurants and other public places.Conclusion: The authors conclude that though there are some strengths but these sanitary inspections might have a little contribution in the improvement of food safety and hygiene in commercial restaurants and other public places. The authors show their outlook for improvement, such as setting up clear standards as well as establishment of policies, laws and guidelines pertaining to the operation of commercial restaurants.Keywords: Commercial restaurants, sanitary inspection, food safet

    Grasshopper DCMD : an undergraduate electrophysiology lab for investigating single-unit responses to behaviorally-relevant stimuli

Investigating the neural circuits that give rise to this escape behavior can provide a tractable demonstration of systems-level neuroscience research for undergraduate laboratories. In this paper, we describe three related hands-on exercises using the grasshopper and affordable technology to bring neurophysiology, neuroethology, and neural computation to life and enhance student understanding and interest. We simplified a looming stimuli procedure using the Backyard Brains SpikerBox bioamplifier, an open-source and low-cost electrophysiology rig, to extracellularly record activity of the descending contralateral movement detector (DCMD) neuron from the grasshopper’s neck. The DCMD activity underlies the grasshopper's motor responses to looming monocular visual cues and can easily be recorded and analyzed on an open-source iOS oscilloscope app, Spike Recorder. Visual stimuli are presented to the grasshopper by this same mobile application allowing for synchronized recording of stimuli and neural activity. An in-app spike-sorting algorithm is described that allows a quick way for students to record, sort, and analyze their data at the bench. We also describe a way for students to export these data to other analysis tools. With the protocol described, students will be able to prepare the grasshopper, find and record from the DCMD neuron, and visualize the DCMD responses to quantitatively investigate the escape system by adjusting the speed and size of simulated approaching objects. We describe the results from 22 grasshoppers, where 50 of the 57 recording sessions (87.7%) had a reliable DCMD response. Finally, we field-tested our experiment in an undergraduate neuroscience laboratory and found that a majority of students (67%) could perform this exercise in one two-hour lab setting, and had an increase in interest for studying the neural systems that drive behavior.Funding for this project was supported by the National Institute of Mental Health Small Business Innovation Research grant #2R44MH093334: “Backyard Brains: Bringing Neurophysiology into Secondary Schools.

    The Role of Dietary Carbohydrates in Gestational Diabetes

    Gestational diabetes (GDM) is hyperglycemia that is recognized for the first time during pregnancy. GDM is associated with a wide range of short- and long-term adverse health consequences for both mother and offspring. It is a complex disease with a multifactorial etiology, with disturbances in glucose, lipid, inflammation and gut microbiota. Consequently, its management is complex, requiring patients to self-manage their diet, lifestyle and self-care behaviors in combination with use of insulin. In addition to nutritional recommendations for all pregnant women, special attention to dietary carbohydrate (CHO) amount and type on glucose levels is especially important in GDM. Dietary CHO are diverse, ranging from simple sugars to longer-chain oligo- and poly- saccharides which have diverse effects on blood glucose, microbial fermentation and bowel function. Studies have established that dietary CHO amount and type can impact maternal glucose and nutritional recommendations advise women with GDM to limit total intake or choose complex and low glycemic CHO. However, robust maternal and infant benefits are not consistently shown. Novel approaches which help women with GDM adhere to dietary recommendations such as diabetes-specific meal replacements (which provide a defined and complete nutritional composition with slowly-digested CHO) and continuous glucose monitors (which provide unlimited monitoring of maternal glycemic fluctuations) have shown benefits on both maternal and neonatal outcomes. Continued research is needed to understand and develop tools to facilitate patient adherence to treatment goals, individualize interventions and improve outcomes

    Accumulation of Immature Langerhans Cells in Human Lymph Nodes Draining Chronically Inflamed Skin

    The coordinated migration and maturation of dendritic cells (DCs) such as intraepithelial Langerhans cells (LCs) is considered critical for T cell priming in response to inflammation in the periphery. However, little is known about the role of inflammatory mediators for LC maturation and recruitment to lymph nodes in vivo. Here we show in human dermatopathic lymphadenitis (DL), which features an expanded population of LCs in one draining lymph node associated with inflammatory lesions in its tributary skin area, that the Langerin/CD207+ LCs constitute a predominant population of immature DCs, which express CD1a, and CD68, but not CD83, CD86, and DC–lysosomal-associated membrane protein (LAMP)/CD208. Using LC-type cells generated in vitro in the presence of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, we further found that tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, as a prototype proinflammatory factor, and a variety of inflammatory stimuli and bacterial products, increase Langerin expression and Langerin dependent Birbeck granules formation in cell which nevertheless lack costimulatory molecules, DC–LAMP/CD208 and potent T cell stimulatory activity but express CCR7 and respond to the lymph node homing chemokines CCL19 and CCL21. This indicates that LC migration and maturation can be independently regulated events. We suggest that during DL, inflammatory stimuli in the skin increase the migration of LCs to the lymph node but without associated maturation. Immature LCs might regulate immune responses during chronic inflammation
