Managing professional identity within a changing market environment: New Zealand optometrists’ responses to the growth of corporate optometry
This research investigated the effects of changes in the market environment for optometry services and products on the professional identity of New Zealand optometrists. It explored three issues. First, ways participants’ location within either the independent or corporate sectors shaped their professional identities. Second, ways potential ethical conflicts between participants’ healthcare and retailing identities were resolved. Last, participants’ opinions concerning the future of their profession. Twelve male and fourteen female optometrists were interviewed. Nineteen participants worked within independent optometry practices. Seven worked within practices that were part of international optometry chains. Six participants were recent graduates, the rest experienced optometrists. All participants identified primarily as healthcare professionals. All recognised that practising optometry within a commercial market created the possibility of ethical conflicts between healthcare and business imperatives. There were differences in the ways participants managed this boundary, with participants working within corporate optometry seeming more comfortable with the business aspects of their profession. All participants thought the profession was changing and several suggested that the future of independent optometry was limited. The article concludes that recent changes within the market environment of optometry have heightened tensions between optometrists’ medical and entrepreneurial identities and contributed to changing work patterns within the profession.fals
Design of a "Digital Atlas Vme Electronics" (DAVE) Module
ATLAS-SCT has developed a new ATLAS trigger card, 'Digital Atlas Vme
Electronics' ("DAVE"). The unit is designed to provide a versatile array of
interface and logic resources, including a large FPGA. It interfaces to both
VME bus and USB hosts. DAVE aims to provide exact ATLAS CTP (ATLAS Central
Trigger Processor) functionality, with random trigger, simple and complex
deadtime, ECR (Event Counter Reset), BCR (Bunch Counter Reset) etc. being
generated to give exactly the same conditions in standalone running as
experienced in combined runs. DAVE provides additional hardware and a large
amount of free firmware resource to allow users to add or change functionality.
The combination of the large number of individually programmable inputs and
outputs in various formats, with very large external RAM and other components
all connected to the FPGA, also makes DAVE a powerful and versatile FPGA

A proposed DAQ system for a calorimeter at the International Linear Collider
This note describes R&D to be carried out on the data acquisition system for
a calorimeter at the future International Linear Collider. A generic
calorimeter and data acquisition system is described. Within this framework
modified designs and potential bottlenecks within the current system are
described. Solutions leading up to a technical design report will to be carried

Pinwheel patterns and powder diffraction
Pinwheel patterns and their higher dimensional generalisations display
continuous circular or spherical symmetries in spite of being perfectly
ordered. The same symmetries show up in the corresponding diffraction images.
Interestingly, they also arise from amorphous systems, and also from regular
crystals when investigated by powder diffraction. We present first steps and
results towards a general frame to investigate such systems, with emphasis on
statistical properties that are helpful to understand and compare the
diffraction images. We concentrate on properties that are accessible via an
alternative substitution rule for the pinwheel tiling, based on two different
prototiles. Due to striking similarities, we compare our results with the toy

Hysteresis of spectral evolution in the soft state of black-hole binary LMC X-3
We report the discovery of hysteresis between the x-ray spectrum and
luminosity of black-hole binary LMC X-3. Our observations, with the
Proportional Counter Array on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, took place
entirely within the soft spectral state, dominated by a spectral component that
was fitted well with a multicolor disk blackbody. A power-law component was
seen only during times when the luminosity of the disk blackbody was declining.
The x-ray luminosity at these times was comparable to that seen in transient
systems (x-ray novae) when they return to the hard state at the end of an
outburst. Our observations may represent partial transitions to the hard state;
complete transitions have been seen in this system by Wilms et al. (2001). If
they are related to the soft-to-hard transition in transients, then they
demonstrate that hysteresis effects can appear without a full state transition.
We discuss these observations in the context of earlier observations of
hysteresis within the hard state of binaries 1E 1740.7-2942 and GRS 1758-258

Precision Determination of the Mass Function of Dark Matter Halos
The predicted mass function of dark matter halos is essential in connecting
observed galaxy cluster counts and models of galaxy clustering to the
properties of the primordial density field. We determine the mass function in
the concordance CDM cosmology, as well as its uncertainty, using
sixteen -particle nested-volume dark-matter simulations, spanning a
mass range of over five orders of magnitude. Using the nested volumes and
single-halo tests, we find and correct for a systematic error in the
friends-of-friends halo-finding algorithm. We find a fitting form and full
error covariance for the mass function that successfully describes the
simulations' mass function and is well-behaved outside the simulations'
resolutions. Estimated forecasts of uncertainty in cosmological parameters from
future cluster count surveys have negligible contribution from remaining
statistical uncertainties in the central cosmology multiplicity function. There
exists a potentially non-negligible cosmological dependence (non-universality)
