No preference in female sika deer for conspecific over heterospecific male sexual calls in a mate choice context
Mating signals can be used both in contexts of species recognition and mate quality assessment. This study examines species recognition abilities in oestrous females presented with male mating calls from both conspecifics and closely related allopatric heterospecifics. Red deer and sika deer are naturally allopatric polygynous species capable of hybridization during sympatry. Male mating calls are sexually selected and differ greatly between species. Previous work indicated that most but not all oestrous red deer hinds prefer male mating calls from conspecifics over heterospecific sika deer. Using two-speaker playback experiments, we extend this examination by measuring the preference responses of oestrous sika deer hinds to these stimuli. We predicted that oestrous sika deer hinds will show little flexibility in behavioural responses and prefer conspecific calls over heterospecific calls, similar to those of red deer hinds. In contrast, sika deer hinds showed high levels of flexibility and no difference in overall preference behaviours, suggesting that vocal behaviour does not provide a solid barrier to hybridization in this species. The asymmetry in heterospecific preference responses between these species is discussed in relation to possible causation and hybridization patterns observed in free-ranging populations
Do red deer hinds prefer stags that produce harsh roars in mate choice contexts?
Red deer stags give two types of roars during the breeding season, termed ‘common’ and ‘harsh’ roars. This study tested the hypothesis that the characteristic spectro-temporal structure of male harsh roars functions to directly attract females towards male callers during the breeding season. The results show that oestrous hinds look for longer towards speakers broadcasting sequences containing harsh roars, but do not preferentially approach or spend more time in close proximity to speakers broadcasting harsh roars over those broadcasting only common roars. While these observations confirm that the specific acoustic structure of male harsh roars functions to draw the attention of hinds, they are not consistent with the notion that these calls have an immediate impact on mate choice decisions by stimulating oestrous hinds to move towards male callers. Consequently, we suggest that intersexual selection through female mate choice is unlikely to be a major factor driving the evolution of male red deer harsh roars
Janis-Newman-Winicour and Wyman solutions are the same
We show that the well-known most general static and spherically symmetric
exact solution to the Einstein-massless scalar equations given by Wyman is the
same as one found by Janis, Newman and Winicour several years ago. We obtain
the energy associated with this spacetime and find that the total energy for

The determination of the elastic modulus of rubber mooring tethers and their use in coastal moorings
Compliance must be supplied to any surface mooring to allow the buoy to move with the waves and currents,
and remain moored in position. This can be supplied with a traditional chain catenary or newer compliant
elastic tether or stretch hose technologies. Some applications of each of these three techniques are shown,
with the emphasis placed on the use of compliant elastic tethers. For modeling and designing these
moorings, the elastic modulus of the tether material must be known. Therefore, a new and used piece of
elastic material was terminated, tested for the stretch-strain relationship under set conditions, and the
elastic modulus calculated. For these tests, the elastic tether was stretched out to a mean elongation
between 100 and 250%, then cycled about that stretch by ±25 and ±50% to duplicate a moored application.
The resultant elastic modulus is presented to aid in mooring design. At low elongations, the elastic modulus
is constant at about 125 PSI, but as the mean elongation increases the modulus increases, and as the cycle
tension increase the modulus also increases, reaching a maximum of 900 PSI at 275% stretch.Funding was provided by the Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System

The AXAF technology program: The optical flats tests
The results of a technology program aimed at determining the limits of surface polishing for reflecting X-ray telescopes is presented. This program is part of the major task of developing the Advanced X-ray Astrophysical Facility (AXAF). By studying the optical properties of state-of-the-art polished flat surfaces, conclusions were drawn as to the potential capability of AXAF. Surface microtopography of the flats as well as their figure are studied by X-ray, visual, and mechanical techniques. These techniques and their results are described. The employed polishing techniques are more than adequate for the specifications of the AXAF mirrors
Improved Core Genes Prediction for Constructing well-supported Phylogenetic Trees in large sets of Plant Species
The way to infer well-supported phylogenetic trees that precisely reflect the
evolutionary process is a challenging task that completely depends on the way
the related core genes have been found. In previous computational biology
studies, many similarity based algorithms, mainly dependent on calculating
sequence alignment matrices, have been proposed to find them. In these kinds of
approaches, a significantly high similarity score between two coding sequences
extracted from a given annotation tool means that one has the same genes. In a
previous work article, we presented a quality test approach (QTA) that improves
the core genes quality by combining two annotation tools (namely NCBI, a
partially human-curated database, and DOGMA, an efficient annotation algorithm
for chloroplasts). This method takes the advantages from both sequence
similarity and gene features to guarantee that the core genome contains correct
and well-clustered coding sequences (\emph{i.e.}, genes). We then show in this
article how useful are such well-defined core genes for biomolecular
phylogenetic reconstructions, by investigating various subsets of core genes at
various family or genus levels, leading to subtrees with strong bootstraps that

Exact solution for scalar field collapse
We give an exact spherically symmetric solution for the Einstein-scalar field
system. The solution may be interpreted as an inhomogeneous dynamical scalar
field cosmology. The spacetime has a timelike conformal Killing vector field
and is asymptotically conformally flat. It also has black or white hole-like
regions containing trapped surfaces. We describe the properties of the apparent
horizon and comment on the relevance of the solution to the recently discovered

Evidence of biphonation and source-filter interactions in the bugles of male North American wapiti (Cervus Canadensis)
With an average male body mass of 320 kg, the wapiti, Cervus canadensis, is the largest extant species of Old World deer (Cervinae). Despite this large body size, male wapiti produce whistlelike sexual calls called bugles characterised by an extremely high fundamental frequency. Investigations of the biometry and physiology of the male wapiti’s relatively large larynx have so far failed to account for the production of such a high fundamental frequency. Our examination of spectrograms of male bugles suggested that the complex harmonic structure is best explained by a dual-source model (biphonation), with one source oscillating at a mean of 145 Hz (F0) and the other oscillating independently at an average of 1426 Hz (G0). A combination of anatomical investigations and acoustical modelling indicated that the F0 of male bugles is consistent with the vocal fold dimensions reported in this species, whereas the secondary, much higher source at G0 is more consistent with an aerodynamic whistle produced as air flows rapidly through a narrow supraglottic constriction. We also report a possible interaction between the higher frequency G0 and vocal tract resonances, as G0 transiently locks onto individual formants as the vocal tract is extended. We speculate that male wapiti have evolved such a dualsource phonation to advertise body size at close range (with a relatively low-frequency F0 providing a dense spectrum to highlight size-related information contained in formants) while simultaneously advertising their presence over greater distances using the very highamplitude G0 whistle component
On the divergences of inflationary superhorizon perturbations
We discuss the infrared divergences that appear to plague cosmological
perturbation theory. We show that within the stochastic framework they are
regulated by eternal inflation so that the theory predicts finite fluctuations.
Using the formalism to one loop, we demonstrate that the infrared
modes can be absorbed into additive constants and the coefficients of the
diagrammatic expansion for the connected parts of two and three-point functions
of the curvature perturbation. As a result, the use of any infrared cutoff
below the scale of eternal inflation is permitted, provided that the background
fields are appropriately redefined. The natural choice for the infrared cutoff
would of course be the present horizon; other choices manifest themselves in
the running of the correlators. We also demonstrate that it is possible to
define observables that are renormalization group invariant. As an example, we
derive a non-perturbative, infrared finite and renormalization point
independent relation between the two-point correlators of the curvature
perturbation for the case of the free single field.Comment: 12 page
