EdTec Tour of What’s Possible: Challenging Concepts of Technology Use in the Classroom Through BreakoutEDU
While teacher education candidates and faculty have improved their knowledge and skills with technology, challenges remain regarding their understanding of how to integrate technology effectively within their pedagogical practices. One solution is to provide models of purposeful technology integration within instruction that embeds digital pedagogy throughout the learning process. This paper describes how a teacher education program is addressing the need to engage candidates and faculty around issues of technology integration and adoption. This is done through participation in a Breakout EDU game focused on introducing candidates, and faculty to what might be possible when integrating technology within their instructional practices. Throughout the paper, we describe how restructured instructional spaces and the Breakout EDU game model technology integration and has initiated change within the teacher preparation program
Quantum state conversion by cross-Kerr interaction
A generalized Mach-Zehnder-type interferometer equipped with cross-Kerr
elements is proposed to convert N-photon truncated single-mode quantum states
into (N+1)-mode single-photon states, which are suitable for further state
manipulation by means of beam splitter arrays and ON/OFF-detections, and vice
versa. Applications to the realization of unitary and non-unitary
transformations, quantum state reconstruction, and quantum telemanipulation are
studied.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, using a4.st
Entanglement purification of multi-mode quantum states
An iterative random procedure is considered allowing an entanglement
purification of a class of multi-mode quantum states. In certain cases, a
complete purification may be achieved using only a single signal state
preparation. A physical implementation based on beam splitter arrays and
non-linear elements is suggested. The influence of loss is analyzed in the
example of a purification of entangled N-mode coherent states.Comment: 6 pages, 3 eps-figures, using revtex
Quantum storage of polarization qubits in birefringent and anisotropically absorbing materials
Storage of quantum information encoded into true single photons is an
essential constituent of long-distance quantum communication based on quantum
repeaters and of optical quantum information processing. The storage of
photonic polarization qubits is, however, complicated by the fact that many
materials are birefringent and have polarization-dependent absorption. Here we
present and demonstrate a simple scheme that allows compensating for these
polarization effects. The scheme is demonstrated using a solid-state quantum
memory implemented with an ensemble of rare-earth ions doped into a biaxial
yttrium orthosilicate () crystal. Heralded single photons generated
from a filtered spontaneous parametric downconversion source are stored, and
quantum state tomography of the retrieved polarization state reveals an average
fidelity of , which is significantly higher than what is
achievable with a measure-and-prepare strategy.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, corrected typos and added ref. 3
Changes in intracellular ion activities induced by adrenaline in human and rat skeletal muscle
To study the stimulating effect of adrenaline (ADR) on active Na+/K+ transport we used double-barrelled ion-sensitive micro-electrodes to measure the activities of extracellular K+ (aKe) and intracellular Na+ (aNai) in isolated preparations of rat soleus muscle, normal human intercostal muscle and one case of hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (h.p.p.). In these preparations bath-application of ADR (10−6 M) resulted in a membrane hyperpolarization and transient decreasesaKe andaNai which could be blocked by ouabain (3×10−4 M). In the h.p.p. muslce a continuous rise ofaNai induced by elevation ofaKe to 5.2 mM could be stopped by ADR. In addition, the intracellular K+ activity (aKi), the free intracellular Ca2+ concentration (pCai) and intracellular pH (pHi) were monitored in rat soleus muscle. During ADRaKi increased, pHi remained constant and intracellular Ca2+ apparently decreased. In conclusion, our data show that ADR primarily stimulates the Na+/K+ pump in mammalian skeletal muscle. This stimulating action is not impaired in the h.p.p. muscle
