This work presents different issues related to seismic risk assessment and styles of comunicating partial and final results on maps for remarkably distinct people, such as scientists, preparedness and response officers and general public. The convenience of making different classifications and representations of building vulnerability types, seismic hazard parameters and damage estimates in function of the final user of the results is highlighted. Results of recent risk assessment study of Murcia (south eastern Spain) carried out by the authors are used for illustration

Tratamiento de las fracturas diafisarias de húmero mediante osteosíntesis con placa

Hemos tratado 22 facturas agudas diafisarias de húmero mediante reducción abierta y fijación con placa AO entre 1991 y 1999. Todas las fracturas excepto una consolidaron en un plazo medio de 94 días. De acuerdo con el criterio de Brumback los resultados fueron excelentes o buenos en el 90% de los casos. La complicación postoperativa más importante fue la parálisis del nervio radial en 3 casos; todos se recuperaron espontáneamente en un plazo medio de 108 días. La fijación interna mediante placa proporciona unos buenos resultados, siendo un método adecuado para la estabilización y consolidación de las fracturas humerales.Twenty-three humeral diaphyseal fractures were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using AO plating technique between 1991 and 1999. All but one fracture healed at an average of 94 days. The results were evaluated according to the criteria of Brumback. The 90 per cent of the cases had excellent or good results. The most important postoperative complication was transient radial-nerve palsy in three cases. All radial nerve palsies recovered between 45 days and 108 days. Internal fixation using plating technique give good results and provide predictable methods for achieving fracture stabilization and ultimate healing

Se describe un caso de diabetes insípida central [DIC] en un perro. Este caso es particularmente interesante pues se observan modificaciones electrolíticas poco habituales. Chemical Characterization of Asturian Cider

Ninety-four samples of Asturian natural cider were analyzed for titratable and volatile acidities, pH, alcoholic, total polyphenol, and acidic polysaccharide contents, nonvolatile acids, polyalcohols, residual sugars, and major volatile compounds. A partial least-squares regression analysis (PLR-1) was performed to correlate the chemical composition and the origin of the raw material, the cider samples being grouped into two categories: an “odd” class, cider made from foreign apples (1995 and 1997), and an “even” class, ciders made from Asturian apples (1996 and 1998). The mathematical model has a multiple linear correlation coefficient of 80%

We studied the potential of red deer as bluetongue maintenance hosts and sentinels. Deer maintained detectable bluetongue virus (BTV) serotype 4 RNA for 1 year after the virus was cleared from livestock. However, the virus was not transmitted to yearlings.
