Measurement of Spin Correlation in Top Quark Pair Production in Semi-Leptonic Final State

    Get PDF
The measurement of correlation between spins of top and anti-top quarks, produced in proton-proton collisions at LHC, is described for the semi-leptonic decay of the top quark pair (one top quark decaying leptonically and the other hadronically). The simulated events are reconstructed after full simulation of the CMS detector. The spin correlation coefficient is estimated based on a total integrated luminosity of ten inverse femtobarns. Including systematic uncertainties, the correlation coefficient can be measured with a total relative uncertainty of 17% or 27% depending on the choice of the deay angles used

Probing Supersymmetry With Third-Generation Cascade Decays

The chiral structure of supersymmetric particle couplings involving third generation Standard Model fermions depends on left-right squark and slepton mixings as well as gaugino-higgsino mixings. The shapes and intercorrelations of invariant mass distributions of a first or second generation lepton with bottoms and taus arising from adjacent branches of SUSY cascade decays are shown to be a sensitive probe of this chiral structure. All possible cascade decays that can give rise to such correlations within the MSSM are considered. For bottom-lepton correlations the distinctive structure of the invariant mass distributions distinguishes between decays originating from stop or sbottom squarks through either an intermediate chargino or neutralino. For decay through a chargino the spins of the stop and chargino are established by the form of the distribution. When the bottom charge is signed through soft muon tagging, the structure of the same-sign and opposite-sign invariant mass distributions depends on a set function of left-right and gaugino-higgsino mixings, as well as establishes the spins of all the superpartners in the sequential two-body cascade decay. Tau-lepton and tau-tau invariant mass distributions arising from MSSM cascade decays are likewise systematically considered with particular attention to their dependence on tau polarization. All possible tau-lepton and tau-tau distributions are plotted using a semi-analytic model for hadronic one-prong taus. Algorithms for fitting tau-tau and tau-lepton distributions to data are suggested.Comment: 35 pages, 17 .eps figure

Searching for the Kaluza-Klein Graviton in Bulk RS Models

The best-studied version of the RS1 model has all the Standard Model particles confined to the TeV brane. However, recent variants have the Standard Model fermions and gauge bosons located in the bulk five-dimensional spacetime. We study the potential reach of the LHC in searching for the lightest KK partner of the graviton in the most promising such models in which the right-handed top is localized very near the TeV brane and the light fermions are localized near the Planck brane. We consider both detection and the establishment of the spin-2 nature of the resonance should it be found.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures - JHEP published version, figures added, branching ratio correcte

New angles on top quark decay to a charged Higgs

To properly discover a charged Higgs Boson (H±H^\pm) requires its spin and couplings to be determined. We investigate how to utilize \ttbar spin correlations to analyze the H±H^\pm couplings in the decay tbH+bτ+ντt\to bH^+\to b\tau^+\nu_\tau. Within the framework of a general Two-Higgs-Doublet Model, we obtain results on the spin analyzing coefficients for this decay and study in detail its spin phenomenology, focusing on the limits of large and small values for tanβ\tan\beta. Using a Monte Carlo approach to simulate full hadron-level events, we evaluate systematically how the H±τ±ντH^\pm\to\tau^\pm\nu_\tau decay mode can be used for spin analysis. The most promising observables are obtained from azimuthal angle correlations in the transverse rest frames of t(tˉ)t(\bar{t}). This method is particularly useful for determining the coupling structure of H±H^\pm in the large tanβ\tan\beta limit, where differences from the SM are most significant.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures. Charged Higgs Observability Through Associated Production With W at a Muon Collider

The observability of a charged Higgs boson produced in association with a W boson at future muon colliders is studied. The analysis is performed within the MSSM framework. The charged Higgs is assumed to decay to tb and a fully hadronic final state is analyzed, i.e., mu+mu- \rightarrow H\pmW\mp \rightarrow tbW \rightarrow WbbW \rightarrow jjjjbb. The main background is tt production in fully hadronic final state which is an irreducible background with very similar kinematic features. It is shown that although the discovery potential is almost the same for a charged Higgs mass in the range 200 GeV < mH\pm < 400 GeV, the signal significance is about 1sigma for tanbeta = 50 at integrated luminosity of 50 fb-1. The signal rate is well above that at e+e- linear colliders with the same center of mass energy and enough data (O(1 ab-1)) will provide the same discovery potential for all heavy charged Higgs masses up to mH\pm \sim 400 GeV, however, the muon collider cannot add anything to the LHC findings.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figure

Limits on WWgamma and WWZ Couplings from W Boson Pair Production

    Get PDF
The results of a search for W boson pair production in pbar-p collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV with subsequent decay to emu, ee, and mumu channels are presented. Five candidate events are observed with an expected background of 3.1+-0.4 events for an integrated luminosity of approximately 97 pb^{-1}. Limits on the anomalous couplings are obtained from a maximum likelihood fit of the E_T spectra of the leptons in the candidate events. Assuming identical WWgamma and WWZ couplings, the 95 % C.L. limits are -0.62<Delta_kappa<0.77 (lambda = 0) and -0.53<lambda<0.56 (Delta_kappa = 0) for a form factor scale Lambda = 1.5 TeV.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review

We present results of a search for R-parity-violating decay of the neutralino chi_1^0, taken to be the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle. It is assumed that this decay proceeds through one of the lepton-number violating couplings lambda-prime_2jk (j=1,2; k=1,2,3). This search is based on 77.5 pb-1 of data, collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV in 1992-1995.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

A Quasi-Model-Independent Search for New Physics at Large Transverse Momentum

    Get PDF
We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy ("Sleuth") to search for new high p_T physics in approximately 100 pb^-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV collected by the DZero experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. Over thirty-two e mu X, W+jets-like, Z+jets-like, and 3(lepton/photon)X exclusive final states are systematically analyzed for hints of physics beyond the standard model. Simultaneous sensitivity to a variety of models predicting new phenomena at the electroweak scale is demonstrated by testing the method on a particular signature in each set of final states. No evidence of new high p_T physics is observed in the course of this search, and we find that 89% of an ensemble of hypothetical similar experimental runs would have produced a final state with a candidate signal more interesting than the most interesting observed in these data.Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures. Search for Electroweak Production of Single Top Quarks in ppbar Collisions

    Get PDF
We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the electron+jets and muon+jets decay channels. The measurements use ~90 pb^-1 of data from Run 1 of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, collected at 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector between 1992 and 1995. We use events that include a tagging muon, implying the presence of a b jet, to set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the cross section for the s-channel process ppbar->tb+X of 39 pb. The upper limit for the t-channel process ppbar->tqb+X is 58 pb.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. This is the published versio

    Get PDF
We report on a search for the first generation heavy neutrino that is an isosinglet under the standard SU(2)_L gauge group. The data collected with the L3 detector at center-of-mass energies between 130 GeV and 208 GeV are used. The decay channel N_e --> eW is investigated and no evidence is found for a heavy neutrino, N_e, in a mass range between 80 GeV and 205 GeV. Upper limits on the mixing parameter between the heavy and light neutrino are derived
