Designing colloidal ground state patterns using short-range isotropic interactions
DNA-coated colloids are a popular model system for self-assembly through
tunable interactions. The DNA-encoded linkages between particles theoretically
allow for very high specificity, but generally no directionality or long-range
interactions. We introduce a two-dimensional lattice model for particles of
many different types with short-range isotropic interactions that are pairwise
specific. For this class of models, we address the fundamental question whether
it is possible to reliably design the interactions so that the ground state is
unique and corresponds to a given crystal structure. First, we determine lower
limits for the interaction range between particles, depending on the complexity
of the desired pattern and the underlying lattice. Then, we introduce a
`recipe' for determining the pairwise interactions that exactly satisfies this
minimum criterion, and we show that it is sufficient to uniquely determine the
ground state for a large class of crystal structures. Finally, we verify these
results using Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
Microtubule length distributions in the presence of protein-induced severing
Microtubules are highly regulated dynamic elements of the cytoskeleton of
eukaryotic cells. One of the regulation mechanisms observed in living cells is
the severing by the proteins katanin and spastin. We introduce a model for the
dynamics of microtubules in the presence of randomly occurring severing events.
Under the biologically motivated assumption that the newly created plus end
undergoes a catastrophe, we investigate the steady state length distribution.
We show that the presence of severing does not affect the number of
microtubules, regardless of the distribution of severing events. In the special
case in which the microtubules cannot recover from the depolymerizing state (no
rescue events) we derive an analytical expression for the length distribution.
In the general case we transform the problem into a single ODE that is solved

3D MHD Modeling of the Gaseous Structure of the Galaxy: Synthetic Observations
We generated synthetic observations from the four-arm model presented in
Gomez & Cox (2004) for the Galactic ISM in the presence of a spiral
gravitational perturbation. We found that velocity crowding and diffusion have
a strong effect in the l-v diagram. The v-b diagram presents structures at the
expected spiral arm velocities, that can be explained by the off-the-plane
structure of the arms presented in previous papers of this series. Such
structures are observed in the Leiden/Dwingeloo HI survey. The rotation curve,
as measured from the inside of the modeled galaxy, shows similarities with the
observed one for the Milky Way Galaxy, although it has large deviations from
the smooth circular rotation corresponding to the background potential. The
magnetic field inferred from a synthetic synchrotron map shows a largely
circular structure, but with interesting deviations in the midplane due to

Product involvement, WOM and eWOM in the fast food industry : a young adult perspective in an emerging African economy
Abstract: This study investigates the relationship between product involvement, WOM, and eWOM in the fast food industry between two sub-groups of young adult consumers in South Africa. A quantitative design was followed, with primary data (n = 201) gathered from respondents using a self-administered questionnaire. The results suggest that product involvement exerts a positive and significant influence on WOM and eWOM in the case of both young adult sub-groups. There is also no difference in the perceptions of the two sub-groups of young adults concerning product involvement, WOM, and eWOM. Product involvement is found to play an important role in spreading WOM and eWOM in the fast food industry, and is proposed as an important focus area for managers
On the size and shape of excluded volume polymers confined between parallel plates
A number of recent experiments have provided detailed observations of the
configurations of long DNA strands under nano-to-micrometer sized confinement.
We therefore revisit the problem of an excluded volume polymer chain confined
between two parallel plates with varying plate separation. We show that the
non-monotonic behavior of the overall size of the chain as a function of
plate-separation, seen in computer simulations and reproduced by earlier
theories, can already be predicted on the basis of scaling arguments. However,
the behavior of the size in a plane parallel to the plates, a quantity observed
in recent experiments, is predicted to be monotonic, in contrast to the
experimental findings. We analyze this problem in depth with a mean-field
approach that maps the confined polymer onto an anisotropic Gaussian chain,
which allows the size of the polymer to be determined separately in the
confined and unconfined directions. The theory allows the analytical
construction of a smooth cross-over between the small plate-separation de
Gennes regime and the large plate-separation Flory regime. The results show
good agreement with Langevin dynamics simulations, and confirm the scaling

How IBD patients cope with IBD: A systematic review
AbstractObjectiveInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can have a significant impact on psychological wellbeing and quality of life. How one responds to and copes with IBD may be an important determinant of psychological wellbeing. We aimed to systematically review all published literature regarding coping strategies of IBD patients.MethodsOvid and Pubmed databases were searched over 6months. All articles about coping strategies of IBD patients were included.ResultsThirty-nine articles using twenty-two survey instruments were found, of which twenty-six were adult exclusive, eleven were children exclusive, and two had both adults and children. Two were interventional, four were longitudinal, and the rest were cross-sectional studies. Four studies were qualitative while the rest used quantitative measures. Variance in research designs and coping instruments led to inconsistent results. The most common theme was that emotion-focused coping was associated with worse psychological outcomes, while the effect of problem-focused coping was less consistently associated with better psychological outcomes.ConclusionsMore longitudinal and interventional studies are needed to causally link coping strategies with psychological outcomes in IBD patient
Seasonal adjustment of daily data with CAMPLET
In the last decade large data sets have become available, both in terms of the number of time series and with higher frequencies (weekly, daily and even higher). All series may suffer from seasonality, which hides other important fluctuations. Therefore time series are typically seasonally adjusted. However, standard seasonal adjustment methods cannot handle series with higher than monthly frequencies. Recently, Abeln et al. (2019) presented CAMPLET, a new seasonal adjustment method, which does not produce revisions when new observations become available. The aim of this paper is to show the attractiveness of CAMPLET for seasonal adjustment of daily time series. We apply CAMPLET to daily data on the gas system in the Netherlands
