Study on the performance of two quality protein maize (QPM) varieties (Srikandi Putih-1 and Srikandi Kuning-1) plus two Indonesian open pollinated varieties (Bayu and Lamuru) was conducted at seven environments in Java and Bali. The experiments were arranged in a randomized block design with three replications. Each variety was grown in a four-row plot with 5 m length, 75cm apart and 25 cm within row spacing and one plant per hill. Observations were made on yield, biomass, plant height, ear height, flowering dates, yield components, plant and ear aspect, husk cover, diseases incidence of Puccinia polysora and Helminthossporium maydis, protein contains, lysine, and tryptophan-amino acids contains. In general, Srikandi Putih-1 and Srikandi Kuning-1 varieties had a good adaptations under all environments. They contained nearly twice the lysine and tryptophan-amino acids compared to Bayu and Lamuru varieties. Therefore, they have future prospect for the development of protein synthesis in humans and monogastric animals

Thefocus of wheat research in Indonesia is to obtained newpotential wheat lines that are adapted to low-mid elevationand heat tolerant. This study was aimed to obtaininformation on the effect of interaction of season x line xlocation and genetic variability of wheat lines in tropicalagroecosystem. This study was conducted at the Seameo-Biotrop (<400 masl) and Indonesian Ornamental CropsResearch Institute-Cipanas (>1,000 masl) experimental fieldfor two seasons. The results showed that there was an effectof interaction of season x line x location on plant height, days to flowering, number of spikelet and floret, seed/headweight, rate of grain filling, yield, flag leaf width, stomatadensity, chlorophyll b, and leaf greenness. Meanwhileseveral characters were only influenced by the interaction ofline x location, they were yield component characters, ie.empty floret percentage, number of seed/ head, 1,000 seedweight, number of head/m2 and seed/plant weight. Sevencharacters were not influenced by interaction of neitherseason x line x environment nor line x location, they werenumber of productive tillers, head length, number ofseed/head, chlorophyll a, ratio of chlorophyll a/b, totalchlorophyll, and leaf thickness. The characters that havehigh heritability and wide genetic variability for the twoanalysis models were the number of spikelet

Maize Hybrid Genotypes Selection for Low N Tolerance. Syafruddin, Muhammad Azrai, and Suwarti. Most of the maize crop land development in Indonesia are defficient of N, to overcome these obstacles is generally done with N fertilizer. N fertilization beside increasing the cost of production is also causing environmental pollution. Therefore, fertilizer efficiency is required. One effort to reduce N fertilizer USAge is the use of low N-tolerant genotypes. Selection of low Ntolerant maize hybrids are expected to found a low N genotypes with high productivity. The experiment was conducted in low land in May-August 2012 in the Bontobili Research Station, Gowa, South Sulawesi. A total of 32 genotypes including check entries were 4 known hybrid Bima- 2, Bima-3, Bima-4, and Bisi-2 were screened in normal rate of N application (200 kg N/ha) and low N (100 kg N/ha). The treatment used experimental randomized complete block design at each fertilization with three replications. To Determine of genotype x N interaction was used combine analysis. The result showed that in selection of tolerance genotypes for low N, beside yield as selection parameter we can also consider leaf chlorophyll, harvest index, number of kernel in ear and seed weight. Genotypes 1044-0 x 1027-11 and AMB07 x CML 161 were tolerance to low N and B11 x 11 is moderat to low N. Three of genotypes have yield equal to 4 check varieties (Bima-2, Bima-3, Bima-4, and Bisi-2)

The success of selection in plant breeding program is determined by genetic variabiliities, heritability values and the correlation between agronomic characters and yield. The study aims to determine the genetic variability, heritability and the effec of agronomic characters to grain yield. The experiment was conducted in February to May 2016 in Grobogan, Central Java. The experiment consists of twelve genotypes of maize hybrids, arranged in a randomized block design with three replications. The characters observed were plant height, ear height, number of harvested ear, shelling percentage, moisture content of grain harvested, weight of 100 grains, ear length, ear diameter, number of rows per ear, number of seeds per row per ear, and grain yields. The results showed that the genetic variability of agronomic characters was broad, except ear diameter. Almost all of the heritability values of yield components were high, except harvested ear weight and ear diameter. The characters of plant height, ear height and as the genotypic gave high of a direct effect on the yield higher, while direct effect of the phenotypic character of ear hairves on grain yield are higher

Information on genetic divergence ofinbred lines and performance of the hybrids developed fromthe lines is a great value in maize hybrid program. A studywas conducted to evaluate genetic diversity of six QPM andfive normal maize inbred lines, to determine the relationshipbetween genetic distance based on SSR markers and thegrain yield of single cross hybrid, and to get informationpromising hybrid from the single cross of QPM hybrid.Twenty four polymorphic primers that covered the 10 maizechromosomes were used to fingerprint the lines, detectingin 94 alleles (average of 3.9 and a range of 2-6 alleles perlocus). Genetic divergences were determined using theJaccard's similarity coefficient, and a dendrogram wasconstructed using the UPGMA. Cluster analysis divided theinbreds into two clusters that were confirmed by principalcoordinate analysis. Two promising QPM hybrids that arecrossed from different heterotic group were found. Theestimated value of simple correlations (r) of GDs with thegain yield of single cross hybrid was negatif (-0.07). There isa need to conduct more field trials to obtain more accuratecorrelations, particularly in a practical utility for predictingmaize hybrid performance for grain yield
